- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2018There can be little doubt that we live in an age of rapid technological advancements. The world seems smaller and more connected than ever before. In such an environment, there is an ongoing battle to gain the often fleeting interest of the people within this society. This can be a difficult task in a world which is frequently characterized by the need for instant gratification. Television, video games, social media and the Internet have become constant staples and sources of entertainment in this culture. Not that there is anything particularly wrong with that mind you. As the saying goes…”it is what it is.” However, when something comes along that transports us back into an age which is characterized by different priorities and needs, it is like a breath of fresh air. That is exactly what Stephen Ainley does in his novel, The Dennis Bisskit Adventures. If you love a wholesome and heartwarming story which is saturated with humor, then this novel needs to be put on your “To Be Read” list “tout suite!”
The novel follows the life and escapades of the loveable, albeit very accident prone Dennis Bisskit. Born just after the Second World War ended, we are able to see young Dennis grow up in the 1950’s and 60’s and transform from an innocent and bungling boy, to a young man in his own right. In order to show this progression, the author puts together a series of Dennis’s significant life events, from the painful awkwardness of early school life to joining the Staffordshire Regiment and fighting in Uganda. In between the reader is treated to a number of hilarious adventures. From Dennis trying to set a new world record for running the mile (my personal favorite), to the tribulations at his first real job in a department store. The very humorous escapades clearly reveal a young boy’s unique and poignant journey into manhood.
Did I mention that this book is thoroughly funny? The various scenarios which Dennis finds himself in are truly gut splitting. However, it is not just the actual incidents which are comical. Indeed, it is a mixture of the well laid out story scenes, perfectly described setting and solid character development by the author which makes it all work. If Dennis was not such a likable, optimistic and good natured character, the humor would fall flat as a pancake. As readers we find ourselves constantly laughing with Dennis, not actually at him. The ability to pull this off is no easy feat and the author manages it masterfully.
In regards to character development, there are a number of very interesting and well developed characters in the novel. Aside from Dennis, the supporting characters such as his family, Stinky, Mrs. Ricketts and Sergeant Plunkett are developed with intricate care. They are all colorful, comical and entertaining in their own right. The reader cannot help but engage with and relate to the characters in the book. Also, they all solidly support the overall theme which is “the coming of age.” This serious theme is frequently presented in the story in a unique and comical manner.
The setting for this story takes place in a different era, over 70 years ago. Life was much different then. Having recently seen the end of World War 2, it was a society focused upon simply living and rebuilding lives. Modern day technology and luxuries were not part of this world. However, that is not to say that things were unpleasant or tedious. They were just different. Many people would say it was a more wholesome time consisting of far less distraction. Stephen Ainley aptly captures such an atmosphere in his novel. It is like we virtually travel back in time to a different age and experience these adventures with Dennis. For those of us in the mature stage of our lives, such as myself, it is a very welcome trip and is fondly embraced. Overall I would recommend this book for almost any age from Teen and up. There is something in it for everyone. Nevertheless, I would also say it holds something quite special for those readers who are a bit older.
If you are looking for a story which is extremely well written, then The Dennis Bisskit Adventures is a perfect choice. It is hilarious, poignant, and at times, a bit sad. The writing has a beautiful flow to it and ties everything together in an exceptional and descriptive manner.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2021Stephen Ainley's The Dennis Bisskit Adventures is a fun, thoughtful trip back to the 50s and 60s Dudley in central England. It's a coming-of-age story that's full of humor and nostalgia, especially for those of us whose childhoods spanned those decades. It was a simpler, uncluttered time, with traditional values and expectations—but those same decades were harbingers of a far-reaching era of cultural, technological, and moral revolution in most of the civilized world—an transformation that still shows little sign of letting up.
Dennis's optimism and strangely unbending self-confidence allow him to attack the trials and disappointments he encounters that never seem to waver. We cheer for him each time, even though we can be sure something is going to go horribly wrong. Dennis is accident-prone, makes bad decisions, and gets involved in some barely believable but laugh-out-loud situations. But his attitude and personality undermine the embarrassment and disappointment. In fact, there are moments where he can and does laugh at himself.
The novel has an episodic structure as Dennis deals with a series of miscalculations and consequences. As the title indicates, this is story is a series of "adventures." That said, the underlying theme of Dennis's continued growth into adulthood ties all the episodes together. Some of the characters he encounters are over-the-top, and you won't soon forget Mrs. Ricketts or Colour Sergeant Plunkett. Both are Dennis's nemeses, but he learns lessons from these relationships that help him mature.
Overall, The Dennis Bisskit Adventures is engaging, charming and will keep you turning pages to see what will happen next. Plenty of laughs and even a few tears await the reader from the outset. This delightful novel is a solid five-star read. You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2021A wonderful fun read that follows the (mis)adventures of Dennis. From a young pre-teen tight up to his joining the Army, we are right there alongside Dennis and his family, and friends, as he stumbles through life in England in the 50’s and 60’s.
I must admit to many smiles and a more than occasional giggle, that attests to this authors wonderful ability to get the comedic angle just right. I think we can all see a bit of ourselves in young Dennis and that adds to humour.
In these stressful times, this is just the tonic one needs.
Five fun ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars for a very, very funny read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious coming of age story, wonderfully written
I had a day on the sofa on a rainy Bank holiday and read this book from start to finish. Well written and very funny, brought back fond memories from my youth.
I loved Dennis Bisskit as you follow his life with his family, his school days, his best friend Stinky. The story includes his trip with granddad, scouts, then going to work in a department store and a hotel.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting an easy, witty read with lovable characters. I loved the one mile world record chapter! Wonderful stuff from Dudley and Skeggers

5.0 out of 5 stars There should be such a thing as ‘doing a Dennis’
This is a highly funny tale of an awkward ginger boy from Dudley UK. A boy that happens to have ears that are different sizes. It’s about his life as he grows up through the 60s before finally joining the army. If it can happen to Dennis, it certainly does, and with hilarious consequences. You know it’s going to go wrong, but in Simpsons style, it happens in the most unexpected way. Somehow no matter his hijinks he still manages to come out from everything smelling of roses, which just adds to his charm. He is accident prone okay, and makes some bad decisions, but he is a goodhearted and adorable character. I’m pretty sure there should be such a phrase as ‘doing a Dennis’ after reading this book. It is engaging and amusing in a delightfully charming British way and has a laugh on nearly every page.
Though I feel there are a few technicalities that could improve the flow, this is just a personal preference and didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book at all. I can honestly say that it is my favourite book that I’ve read this year.
Stephen does a great job of engaging the reader, warming the heart and making you smile through his characters and writing style. I highly recommend this read and will certainly be reading the other Dennis Bisskit titles in the future. Oh Dennis, what are you going to do next?

5.0 out of 5 stars Dennis is Infectious!
I'm completely hooked on Dennis Bisskit, I didn't make time to do this review when I finished Book 1, I went straight into Book 2. He is a glass-half-full kind of guy, always seeing the bright side, he's forever optimistic. He's adorable with his flaws and quirks. He seems to attract disasters like a magnet, but somehow he always comes out the other side with a smile. he and his best mate Stinky have made me laugh out loud and talk out loud, saying "Dennis, that's not a good idea..." If it can go wrong it will but in the most hilarious, unpredictable way.
This is storytelling at its best from Stephen Ainley, the writing style is simple and uncluttered. I have laughed out loud and giggled with tears in my eyes as I've read each page. In these stressful times, Dennis is the perfect tonic to remind ourselves that laughter is indeed the best medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you laugh out loud
I really enjoyed the Dennis Bisskit Adventures and I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book. It's a mixture of fun and nostalgia, and you never know what's going to happen next, which makes it all the more enjoyable. A super, well written book that I'm sure everyone will enjoy. Dennis is a great character and if you're disappointed to leave him behind when the book ends, fear not, as there are more books in the Dennis Bisskit series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
This book will make you laugh...a lot! It is full of humour, some obvious, some far more subtle and despite its farcical tone, it could so easily be a true story. We all know a Dennis or are one - he’s lovable and naive, yet a complete magnet for disaster. The book takes a slightly more serious path about halfway, but just as the poignancy hits, Dennis comes along and we’re back to normality! If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen to Dennis, but he carries on with the utmost optimism and he’ll endear himself to you.
