About the author

Robert Fear has lived in Eastbourne, on the south coast of the UK for half his life. He moved there to be with Lynn, his future wife and is still there with her over thirty years later. As cat-lovers they have taken on several rescue cats over the years and are owned by three at the moment.
For his day job Robert works as a self-employed software consultant. In his spare time he writes, edits and self-publishes books, and organises annual creative writing showcases.
Robert’s interest in travel goes back to his twenties when he spent most of his time abroad. His experiences included; a summer in Ibiza, hitch-hiking around Europe and touring the USA & Canada. His most eventful trip was in 1981 when he travelled around Asia.
Born into a religious sect known as the Exclusive Brethren, his father John took the brave step of leaving it with his young family when Robert was nine years old. Robert never saw his grandparents again but is thankful for being able to grow up outside this restrictive group. His life has been full of adventures that he would never have experienced otherwise.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2020This diverse collection of travel tales from around the world is fascinating in the breadth of its scope. In this anthology, 21 writers share their experiences and have produced 40 short stories. In each case, the authors’ views and focus are centered on varying aspects of the human and physical landscape, each in such a way that they grab the reader’s attention from beginning to end.
The way the authors reveal both the high and low moments, as well as the dangers and the risks that all travelers experience, in various forms, in search for what is new and novel in the world, is both energizing and life-enriching. All writers whose work is featured in this anthology are clearly fascinated by the experience of travel, and by the many wonderful discoveries that they have made along the way.
By the time I had come to the end of the book, I felt that not only had I stood on many a foreign field, and swum in many a foreign sea, but that I had also broadened my horizons by sharing in the heartfelt emotions of the contributors involved. An enlightening read, that is bound to both edify and delight, 40 Memorable Life Experiences: 2020 Edition is a must read for anyone who recognizes the importance of exposing oneself to other cultures and lands.
Writing memoirs is a unique way to cherish your past and present with the future in mind. A well-written memoir makes a splendid gift to your upcoming generations and leaves them with a vivid, personal look at your life experiences. The goal of any traveler should be to create positive memories that last a lifetime. When you recount your travel experience to others, it should invoke in you something that stirs the soul and a longing for the bygone days.
People write memoirs to fixate, analyze, share, or rethink past events. This book refers to important and significant moments in the authors lives. Special mention also to the compiler and editor, Robert Fear. A job well done, sir.
Highly recommended reading and a well-deserved five stars from me.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020Editor Robert Fear’s delightful anthology contains 40 short stories that represent not a longing for a lost past but rather the celebration of human experiences so significant that they are still a hallowed and treasured part of the present.
The stories focus on a wide variety of fondly significant memories. Some are associated with the people and places of childhood and youth, some with unique adventures in far-flung places, some with cherished life events and some with unforgettable lessons taught by a volatile but ultimately compassionate world.
Each story has been selected by the editor to reflect the author’s ability to convey with beauty and clarity the triumphs and attainments, the joy and redemption that make out daily lives rewarding and worthwhile.
Reading these stories has a healing effect on our world-weary minds. They provided me with positive feelings of social connectedness, confidence, and a distinct optimism for both the present and the future.
Stories as buoyant and joyful as these offer a welcome remedy in today’s challenging world.
(Note: I have five stories published in this anthology.)

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2020I like what Robert Fear is doing for aspiring writers! He has compiled a wide variety of entertaining short stories for readers who don’t have much time to read and appreciate good stories. I especially enjoyed the stories written by my cousin, Tina Mattern.
I’ll look forward to a 2021 Edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Memorable Life Experiences? Depends where you come from
“Memorable life experiences” can be a bit of a trap. What is memorable for some could be quite mundane to others, depending on one’s background, life history and country of residence. To assemble this wide collection however must be a labour of love and is a bold attempt on the part of the publisher, to capture moments in ordinary lives where the extra-ordinary or out-of-the-ordinary take place.
The stories come from all over the “Five Eyes” countries, with a heavier weight from the Antipodes. The writers themselves range in age from their twenties into their seventies, with the bulk of them in the “retired and now given over to writing” category. Many have been published before and others are gainfully engaged with local writing groups, submitting work to journals and anthologies, and looking for that big break. For all the reasons mentioned above, therefore, there is an unevenness in this collection: some are strong stories, and others less so.
I quickly skimmed over the pieces that dealt with slices of ordinary middle-class life: weddings, reminiscences of ancestral household objects, memories of friends or pets, camping, teachers in classrooms etc. While they are personal experiences to the writer, some even memorable, they are the stuff of normal life and failed to excite me. The travel stories however, some written with dramatic flair and others as descriptive travelogues, held my interest, for they covered a wide part of the globe:
• Battling altitude sickness while climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.
• The changing of the guard at a hostel when the Janata Party ousted the Congress Party in India for the first time in 30 years.
• The impoverishment of educated and cultured Cubans after Castro closed his economy.
• Fighting dishonesty without losing face in Argentina.
• Developing PTSD as a child due to a volcano eruption in Adak, Alaska.
• Bicycling in Vietnam.
• Portugal inspiring poetry.
• Fruit-pickers in Scotland behaving badly.
• Antipodean guest workers having it rough in England.
• Looking for traces of Leonard Cohen on a Greek island.
In particular, I wanted to call out the work of two writers: Ronald Mackay and Tina Mattern. Their writing went beyond the descriptive and the reflective to the dramatic. In a couple of Mackay’s pieces, he deals with the challenges of juggling farming and an academic job to pay the bills, strained marital relationships, mental illness, and death in the unforgiving Ontario farm belt. Mattern writes a string of linked stories chronicling her unhappy childhood with an abusive step-mother, her adoption by foster parents, and her attempts at go-go dancing where going topless becomes a requirement.
Overall, a mixed bag. But given the short length requirement of the pieces, each was a quick and mostly enjoyable read.
