A Modern Quest for an Ancient Remedy....I was on the cover of Skateboard Canada at 18, met the president of Tahiti at 23, traveled the world and had a six-figure salary by the time I was 25.... And I was completely miserable. EXCERPT: "At the beginning of the ceremony, nobody knows how the Ayahuasca will react, for them or anyone else. Even though I couldn't see anybody else in the dark room, I could sense overtones of apprehension among the group. We were sitting there, waiting for the Ayahuasca to do its magic, wrapped in the darkness of the night. With no warning, an explosion of sound and light shook the entire house. The startling interruption made someone gasp, and I heard a quick squeal from somebody else. The sky crackled to life. I knew at that moment why long ago people thought the thunder came from the sounds of the gods fighting. I imagined Zeus' sword crashing through the clouds. The small room became lit again and again by blasts of purple light. Thunder exploded at the same instant as the lightning flashed and I knew the storm was right on top of us. The storm shook the wooden house with every strike towards the Earth it took. I could feel the sky's energy and I looked across the room. Through the door, I could see the jungle illuminated with each white-hot flash of light. The room was still electrified and loud, and the Ayahusaca made its presence known. People started purging, Otillia started singing, and all the sounds mixed together..."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I had never heard of Ayahuasca before and your journey to track it down and experience it was fascinating...Thanks so much for sharing your book/journey will me, I was happy to go along!" - Cindy Morrison

"
Your story is so honest and has many phrases that are written like poetry. I laughed and really felt your pain as well as your joy. Overall, I feel it is a story that many people can relate to, feel empowered by, and feel more connected to you by. Have you submitted to literary agents as yet? Again... thank you for reminding me of my inner power." - Carrice H

From the Back Cover

Would I find modern wisdom in ancient traditions?
Could a shaman save me?
Or was I just looking for an excuse to get high?I was on the cover Skateboard Canada at 18, met the president of Tahiti at 23, traveled the world and had a six-figure salary by the time I was 25.... And I was completely miserable.By 28 I'd lost everything, I'd lost my job, I'd lost my marriage, I'd lost the most important thing anyone can lose -- I'd lost myself. No matter what I did in life, no matter how hard I tried to find happiness, it always seemed to fall apart. With nothing but a backpack and a ton of questions, I went to the Amazon to look for a shaman that I hoped had the answers.

I was bored all the way through this book. In fact I never finished it. I may go back & finish some day just because I don't like to leave things undone.

I see that Mr. Hayes is a new young author & I must give him credit for at least writing a book. It's not everyone who actually does try to do this. In fact I keep saying I'm going to do it too - but so far nothing. So I do admire the fact that he has made an attempt here & hopefully any critique of this book will only serve to help him in his next venture.

That said ....basically this book is about a skate boarding dude who drinks a lot and smokes pot alot. He travels around the world too & his goal is to "find himself". If you're a young male then perhaps this book would resonate with you more than it did me as I am an older woman.

He goes to the jungle to live with a shaman and to drink a certain potion that is made from plants there. He was hoping for some grand hallucination or mystical vision to give him the secret to life or what he needs to learn in his life.

He tells about living there and going through these ceremonies with other people who are staying there too. Yet, he is still smoking pot and it seems like he cannot give up his routine from his regular life enough to be open enough to experience what he wants to experience.

Honestly for me this story was too repetitive. He talks about himself and his actions and thoughts kind of like a running dialog. And it just was not that interesting to hear about multiple times.

I hoped the book would get more interesting as I continued reading. But it just didn't. What could have added more meat to this book would have been more descriptions of his surroundings in the jungle. Also more character development. That's why I even picked it to begin with. If I had spent 5 weeks in the Amazon jungles you can bet I would have had a lot to say just about that experience alone, even without drinking potions concocted by shamans.

My critique for the author would be to change the title: "Five Weeks in the Amazon" is rather misleading. It leads readers to think that is what your book is going to be about and it's not.

How about "Searching for myself while using the drug Ayahuasca". See right away people would know whether or not they have an interest in this book.

You have to know your audience & advertise your book to the right readers. I feel like you've gotten a lot of negative reviews simply due to an error in the Title. So think about that and if you are able to change the Title at some point please consider doing that.

Also if you have a FB page for your book or a website - you might want to really explain what this book is about so that you do attract the right people. I think you're book is geared for younger readers, like 20s or 30s. To guys & gals who are into sports like skateboarding or going on adventures.

I wish you luck Sean. I really do. Don't give up. I feel there are more stories inside of you to share - so keep writing & maybe have some different age groups read your book prior to publishing and get a feel for what they think first. They can also proof read it for any spelling or grammatical errors while doing this for you. Then use the feedback to do your final draft.

One should not expect this book to be a "book" with plot twists and thought through reader path. It is more a travel journal. Though a journal with some really open and sincere thoughts. It is great too see a person that is really concerned with being a better self. You'll find both self-confidence (at times too much) and ugly things that bothered some reviewers — well, this is what the author was fighting with and his fight is definitely not over And also the reader should identify such vices in himself and work on that :)

Overall I found this book interesting and at (some) times insightful and reassuring, It is not a strong read, but if you're in to support the lifestyle and openness of the author while knowing more about Ayahuasca — that's definitely not a waste of money.

I have some level of appreciation for anybody who puts in the effort to write and publish a book. But unfortunately this effort is truly awful. The writing quality is at a high-school level or below, the text seems never to have been passed through a competent editor (note: muscles are “taut” not “taught”), and the “insights” offered are banal in the extreme. On top of this the book is boring, repetitive, and pretentious. (We get it: you’re a fascinating, free-thinking, not to mention deeply introspective, guy on a noble quest who reads Nietzsche! Sartre! Plato!) The writer comes across as utterly self-centered, insecure, and immature, full of disdain for the work-a-day losers who may not be impressed with his puerile sense of freedom and self-realization. He disparages conventional mental health drugs and the doctors who prescribe them while having no apparent problem with indulging wildly in cocaine and alcohol, both before and during his voyage to “cleanse his spirit” and “find enlightenment.” He finds conventional religion full of hypocrisy and lacking in truth and substance, while choosing to search for enlightenment with tropical drugs and shamans in backwoods Peru. This book was a truly off-putting waste of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars and of how love - of both life and people - can overcome ...

I had this downloaded for some time but it was a while before I actually had the chance to read it; it was worth the wait. I would think there is something everyone can identify with in Hayes’ account, no matter how small. His story makes you think, and very carefully, depending on your own experiences in life and what you have observed through others. Hayes writes with refreshing honesty and a simplicity and sincerity of heart. His humility, compassion and unwavering optimism at the end for someone who has experienced so much, and battled against the odds, is an inspiration of what the human spirit can endure, and of how love - of both life and people - can overcome any fear. Rather extraordinary when you think about how you can meet someone in the most insignificant of moments and chat briefly, only to discover that there is a tremendous story behind the smiling eyes. We learn something every day.

A book written by an old soul. One of those books you just can't put down and that will keep you awake way past your usual bed time. I kept needing to know if all was going to be ok. It is a colourful story, filled with raw emotion and deep insights.
I simply loved reading it. It felt like for the price of a cup of coffee I have been in Peru and I on top of that I took the wisdom without having to go through the pain and sweat.
It takes a lot of courage to write a book like this. Barry Long meet Carlos Castaneda!
