A Boy Remade Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

JJ doesn't like what he sees in the mirror.

Everyone else sees a cute, smart, well-liked seventeen-year-old with a great future ahead of him. But JJ sees an overweight, card-carrying nerd without a girlfriend.

If he could have his way, he'd be more like Mason—popular with the girls, gorgeous body, loved by everyone—but he'd never stoop so low as to actually say this to Mason. No, JJ maintains a facade of dislike for Mason, which isn't too hard to keep up given how arrogant the boy is.

But when they get paired on a school project and are forced to work together, the truth comes spilling out, along with some of the deepest, darkest secrets that JJ has. Secrets he swore to never tell another soul.

I'll admit I enjoyed one of Ballenger's other books "Hunting
Rabbits in the Dark" a bit more than "A Boy Remade" but it's a close second. The author does a wonderful job creating exciting and sensual characters that you can easily fall in love with. His writing takes me quickly through the chapters because I can't wait to find what's coming next.
    Well done!

S.W. Ballenger has become one of my favorite writers. Two of the novels by Ballenger I've read were set in the 1970s. This book is set in the 1980s. I am in my 50s and relate personally to these time periods. S.W. writes YA M/M romance. Trying to make same-sex love work was an entirely different conundrum 40 to 50 years ago than it is today. I remember it well and Ballenger brings it all back for me. This new novel is about an overweight teen named J.J. with poor self esteem who asks Mason the best-looking and best in-shape guy in school to help him make over his body. The boys become close. J.J. realizes he has fallen in love with Mason. J.J. goes through women like a knife cuts through a warm stick of butter. But he never has had feelings for girls - he just likes the sex. After a few months of hard work outs J.J. is born-again hard and six-pack sculpted. Mason can't take his eyes off the new J.J. Might there be a romantic future for these Arkansas teens? Do yourself a favor and read "A Boy Remade" and find out what develops between J.J. and Mason. You will not regret this romantic exercise.
