This book was packed full of action from the first page to the last. Fun story and great experiment with 4 writers, but the inconsistency between how the characters were written was noticable.

Still deserves 4 stars despite my personalthoughts on the style and the gory details in the book (and I'm assuming the series).

I received this book as an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
I have been a great fan of JF Penn for quite a while now and she never ceases to amaze me. She has collaborated with J Thorn before (The Gods Have Risen is a must read.) and I have read his books also.
There was an ancient Peruvian sacrificial skull in a library in Chicago. It was kept in the open in a locked windowed box. Few knew that it had magical properties (evil, of course) save for one of our prime characters, Blake Daniels. Another prime character, Sebastian, appears on the scene with the same intent, but for different reasons: to steal the skull. Sebastian is successful, but drops a clue and Blake follows to try to get the skull.
Segue to a non-stop train leaving for New Orleans, with its legends of the occult. Enter the rest of our prime characters, Sonya, Hank and Corey who are members of Orion's Order, and Aiko and het daughter, Caroline. Not to mention the skull starts oozing and smelling.
Blake manages to steal the skull from Sebastian and opens a portal to try to bring his dead son, Daniel, back to life. Daniel tells Blake off and then a demon appears and exits the portal. Then the fun really begins as the demon goes through the train and more demons enter through the portal to feast on the inhabitants of the train.
I look forward more of this series. It is full of exciting action and I picked up a few more words. I usually get them from JF Penn, but this time I am not sure: trepanning, trephining peuchen. kharisiri, and colo-colo.. Look for them in the book or just look them up.

I knew the back story behind this novel - that four authors collaborated on a train and then wrote a story about that very train ride, although with demons etc. It sounded interesting so I dipped into a genre I do not normally read. The good: it was a thrilling page turner and it did not feel like a collaborative effort, it was well put together. The not so good: I fell out of the story a couple of times when there were VERY convenient, almost contrived happenings that helped the plot along, eg: when one of the characters just happened to find a slip of paper the other character dropped with the exact train ride that character was going to go on, plus a couple of times when doors were open on the train so it was easy for the characters to interact/ find each other. Doors that really wouldn't necessarily be open. I am also concerned that some 'black' or 'African American' minor characters (train attendants etc) were identified as such but other (presumably white) characters were not described in the same way. Overally, these were minor issues in an otherwise enjoyable book (if you enjoy lots of blood and gore and demons).

Blake no longer has the desire to live. The gun is in his mouth, pressure is on the trigger. He has lost his son, the only thing in his world worth living for. Suddenly he realizes there might be a way to reunite with him again. There is a Peruvian skull on display in a museum where he lives, Chicago. It's dark powers can connect you with dead people. He develops a plan to steal it. Unfortunately an academic researcher from Oxford, has stolen it, shattering his dream. Blake sees him taking it, and follows him onto a train to New Orleans. He has to get it back! The Demon Hunters are also on the train. A select group of individuals who hunt and close demon portals when they appear. They can sense when evil is near. The thief, Blake. Something is wrong. A mother, a retired military intelligence officer is also on the train with her daughter. She has a sixth sense, a bad feeling emanating from Blake and the thief. Blake, steals the skull from Sebastian, the art thief . Performs an ancient ritual, and the demons are released. A portal full of evil, carnage and death is released onto the train. This is an extraordinary story of heartbreak, bravery and the will to conquer and survive. An epic , masterfully written dark fantasy thriller. Enjoyed tremendously!!!

American Demon Hunters: Sacrifice - I read this quick-moving novel on a cross-country flight. Perfect choice for travel reading, though it well keep you looking over your shoulder. The backstory of the authors creating this story on a train trip from Chicago to New Orleans was fascinating to me, and it was fun to read the results of their collaboration. Some of the characters are part of the ongoing series, and I'm awfully curious where their road goes.

This isn't my usual genre, but I bought it because I was curious what a book written by four different authors would be like. I wasn't disappointed. The pace is as fast as a speeding locomotive right off the bat, and I found myself devouring this book. It's dark, got an interesting cast of characters and a gruesome awesome relic at the heart of the story. You don't need to have read any American Demon Hunters to follow the story and I highly recommend this.

With four authors and written on a train ride I got this book mostly out of curiosity. I was familiar with JF Penn and J thorn but now the other two authors Zach Bohannon and Lindsey Buroker. I was not disappointed. Loved this book. I have since read other books by these other two others. An ancient Peruvian sacrificial skull in a library in Chicago is the beginning of this evil gripping story. Then skull, demons, dead sons and the story is up and running.

Like the headline says - trite and hackneyed. All been done before and better. Cardboard characters, plot holes you can drive a Mack truck through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced fun

As a long-time fan of JF Penn's supernatural thrillers, I was fascinated to see how a 4-way collaboration involving one of her characters would work. Thankfully it works incredibly well indeed - so well, in fact, that I actually read this book in one sitting, ironically while on a train. The book follows the events of essentially one evening, after a portal is opened to a world populated by demons; demons who have their greedy eyes fixed on humanity. Penn's segments were as action-packed as I've come to expect, but I also found myself hugely enjoying the sections by the other authors as well. It's fast-paced, full of great characters, and a whole heap of thrilling fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
Reviewed in Canada on April 17, 2017
I have three of the four authors in my collection and when I saw that they wrote this together, I thought this should be a great read. I was so right. Hunting and chasing demons is always an exciting time add trapped on a train and its perfect. This collaboration of authors has created a fast paced and suspenseful tale. All the characters were well written and very interesting. I squeezed the time to read it into a very busy weekend and it was well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, some story! I simply love these books that can be read in one or two sittings without dragging things out.

Wow, some story! I simply love these books that can be read in one or two sittings without dragging things out. Easy book to read, and, while short, provides plenty of suspense, excitement, thrills and provokes all kinds of imagery in one's mind, as to what do these demons look like - absolutely wonderful. Can't wait to read the other books that came along with his one.

It’s hard to tell this was written by 4 authors. If you know each writer’s style you’ll no doubt work it out. This is full on, horror is not my usual read but I’m a J F Penn fan so wanted to check it out. It’s got great characters, is part of a series so gives a snap shot of each one. If you love horror this is for you. It’s short snappy and a real page turner.
