WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS

Fiction has the power to change lives.

Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.

But there are messages within the messages.

There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.

Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.

This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.

THE LOWDOWN

Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.

In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.

In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

A Darker Path is the fifteenth book in the Corps Justice series. While it is part of a series, the book can be read as a standalone. Though, since the books build off each other, I highly suggest you read them in order. Events in this storyline tie in with previous books, and A Darker Path will make a lot more sense if you have read the other books first. There is violence. If you like military thrillers, you will love this series and this book. You won't be disappointed.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. In this book, the author did a great job of summarizing the main characters and the entire series of books written so far. As usual in a Corps Justice book, A Darker Path contains many clues, surprises, twists, and turns. It definitely kept me riveted and I could not put it down. Cal spends much of this book without his TJG team. Of course not all is as it appears. This book has a different tone from the previous Corps Justice books.I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see where Cal and Daniel go from here!

Entertainingly different from how I would have brought the end of the relationship between Cal and the President. Zimmer still has his group to aim at a problem and expect results while Cal has his own reputation and path to follow. Absolute power to finish a problem with no questions or oversight is a heady cocktail for anyone. Daniel and Cal recognize the beast they have created and choose to not be a part of the inevitable result of those actions. Whoever said that power corrupts was correct also in the absolute sense. Good end.

The complexity of this storyline relies heavily on the information found in the other books in this series. A tale of a hero who has to deal with a severe physical, mental, and emotional shock. Cal Stokes is back stronger than ever, but wants to find Wilcox, the man who trapped him under a mountain for so long, alone, starving, and feeling his body slowly die. Wilcox now has control of Cal again, and seems to want to convince Cal that they are both “good men”. He only wants Cal to be “as good as he can be”. I cannot pretend to understand this, and it doesn’t seem that Cal does either! Wilcox kills a lot of bad, bad men, and helps children in need around the globe, dragging Cal with him. You can’t act like a vigilante without consequences; many people want to kill Wilcox!

“A Darker Path” is full of surprises, thrilling with lots of action, and mysterious in many respects. 4.5 Stars for an engrossing read!

This is a continuation of a series and I think the reader would understand more by reading the previous novels, particularly the last one, SINS OF THE FATHER. I really have enjoyed ALL the previous novels in this series and found them extremely wee written, very believable and applicable for the time we live in. But this one really left me flat and struggling to turn the page. It is impressed on the reader that Cal is a Marine. The Jefferson Group (and SSI) have ALWAYS had Cal's back, saving his life on numerous occasions, not giving up hunting his cave location, etc. A Brotherhood, A Family,...but they let him walk away to a Known "set up" with hardly a blink. Once Cal gets to Wilcox, Cal sits back, lets himself be dragged into numerous iffy situations, with very little or no push back for Wilcox's riddles. Then towards the end he Pushes back against...again all those who have been his brothers, without getting his "brothers" perspective, then jumping to conclusions and burning his Bridges BEFORE doing his own investigations. I understand PTSD and Stockholm syndrome but don't think he applies. Would have thought Dr Higgins would step in or ALL of his team would have. I just think this is a HUGE departure from Marine logic and life. Just didn't ring true for me. The ending seemed really abrupt, like 5-10 chapters were ripped from end of the book. I have totally enjoyed ALL the other writings of CG Cooper and will await the next installment of the series. Hopefully the next installment will somehow salvage this one.

A Darker Path turned out to not be what I expected. It began well enough but then took a darker path - as if a different author took over at that point. After what happened to Cal in the last book, I would expect that he would set out to find Wilcox and get his retribution from Wilcox and his near death experience. However, Wilcox contacts Cal and kidnaps him, in a way, leading him on what appeared to be a wild goose chase. When the two finally meet on a beautiful island, Wilcox becomes an accommodable host to Cal with no clear direction - only riddles that perplexed both Cal and Me.

The tests that Wilcox had conducted with Cal and the continuing commentary eventually turns him into an ally of Wilcox where he comes to his aid time and time again. When in SE Asia, Wilcox learns about the priests' murder, and the boy's capture, Wilcox sets out on his own to make things right - only to be captured himself and tortured by a Russian group. Cal makes a call to his team back home and they immediately leave to support Cal who sets out to rescue both the boy and Wilcox. Prior to taking Cal to the Philippines, Wilcox asks Cal if he would be interested in working together in the future. Cal brushes it off...but much later with the ending as Mr. Cooper wrote it, I would guess that the next book would pursue something along those lines.

The ending left me breathless, but with a stabbing wonderment as to why it ended like it did. I feel like I missed something...a coverup by Brandon? what caused the animosity between Cal and the CIA leader? Was Cal brainwashed by Wilcox? How did the head Russian get away? Perhaps we'll get the answers in the next installment.

Off we go on another adventure that is full of twists and turns. You just never know where you are going to end up with CG Cooper. Great story and I wonder where it will go from here. Still my favorite Amazon author by far and I’ve tried lots of them mostly waiting for Cal and the boys to come alive again. Most of them end up deleted. Guess you know that I’m recommending CG Cooper and any of his books. Lots more to say but think I would end up giving away too much
