The Essence of Murder: (3rd book in the Detective Giorgio Salvatori Mystery series.) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

When Lindsey Nagel joins a wannabe vampire group, it's not her blood they're after, it's her life.

Lindsey Nagel is polyphobic. She’s afraid of needles, heights, and crowds. And yet, when a friend suggests she join the Essence of Life Society, a group of wannabe vampires, she agrees. When her body is found in the streambed of a canyon by three kids, Detective Giorgio Salvatori is called out. He is joined by his brother, Rocky, his intrepid sidekick, Grosvenor, and the ghost of young Christian Maynard to solve this case.

But this case will take them far beyond a group of people living in the shadows and pretending they are vampires; it will lead them to drug trafficking, a vicious dogfighting ring, and a heroic, but mysterious pit bull, named Shadow.

What people are saying about The Essence of Murder:
"This is a very intense police procedural/murder mystery and I enjoyed the excellent writing I've come to expect from Lynn."

"The Giorgio Salvatori series stands as tall as the wonderful Maids of Mercer. I only wish Lynn would write more quickly and more often so I would have more of her tales to read."

"This is the first book in the series I've read but it won't be the last. If you like detective stories with a bit of paranormal added this is the series for you."

Ms. Bohart kills people for fun and profit (on paper, that is).

She holds a master's degree in theater (directing) and has taught both acting and directing. She has been published in “Woman's World” and "Dead on Demand", an anthology of ghost stories that was on the Library Journal Bestsellers List. She also wrote for the Renton Reporter and has taught writing classes through Kent Parks & Recreation and currently through Green River College.

As an avid dog lover and canine rescue advocate, she weaves dogs into all her novels. In fact, they play major roles. "I want the dogs to be realistic, though," she says. "I don't like books that make animals seem like cartoon figures."

Ms. Bohart now has ten paranormal mystery novels on Amazon, along with two short story books, and two nonfiction books. Her most popular series is the Old Maids of Mercer Island. The first book in that series, "Inn Keeping With Murder" remained on Amazon's top ghost story list for over ten months.

She recently launched the NO ALIBI ZONE on her website as a resource for both mystery writers and mystery fans. The No Alibi Zone takes a deep dive into how homicides are investigated. Through her newsletter “Let’s Talk About Murder,” she interviews police officers, mystery writers, forensic technicians, and others who work in the field of murder investigations. She also writes the MURDER BRIEF, which are blog posts on topics like the serial killer gene, the Body Farm, whether eyewitness testimony is reliable, and more.

This is a very intense police procedural/murder mystery and I enjoyed the excellent writing I've come to expect from Lynn. I have to be honest and say the subject matters of the story line were hard to take but they're a reality in our world which is sad but true. There are also other very realistic aspects to the story that were very interesting. I don't like to give anything away in reviews so this is as far as I go. I really like Giorgio and all of the other main characters and the investigating was excellent also. The touch of paranormal with the ghost boy Christian and Medium/Psychic, Flame, gives this series and extra edge for me. Loved Shadow the pit bull dog and was amazed she was so loving despite her traumatic life. I had a good adrenalin punch with the suspense and enjoyed immensely. Look forward to the next in the series if we're lucky.
I know you have a very busy life Lynn so thank you for this entertaining read. Hopefully we're going to get another Old Maids of Mercer Island in the future!

Wow, I love the Salvatori stories! Intense and unrelenting in the subplots that keep you wanting more. I loved all these subplots and the passion of Salvatori for his police work and the supernatural components. The characters spring forth as full people with their own stories that play into the plot... and the embellishment of that plot with real situations of in our world full of love and evil. To have the greed and terror play out through illegal dog fighting and real-life scams brings three-dimensional qualities not familiar in more well known writers. Lynn Bohart is paving her way to becoming one of those better known writers. Thanks, Lynn. Please write another Salvatori story.

I really like Lynn Bohart's Giorgio Salvatore mysteries. The characters are well developed and the plots keep the reader's attention. But this one has several editing errors (at first a tattoo is on a person's ankle, then later it's on the hip; a person is described as having a Facebook page at one point, then later the detectives are lamenting that there is no social media presence at all). It's a bit off-putting, but I still like the story.

I just finished reading "The Essence of Murder". Another great book from Lynn. I love this book as well as all of her other books because It kept my interest up, I couldn't put it down and there were many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat!! When I read her books it seems like I am watching a movie since she describes everything so well and puts the reader right in the front row so that one feels like they are actually there with the characters as her stories unfold. She is one of my favorite authors.

I love the Giorgio Salvatori series for several reasons. I love Lynn's writing and admire how she comes up with the ideas behind the stories. As a dog lover, I enjoy that part of the series too. This book had the story of Shadow, the pit bull tugging at my heartstrings. I feel so comfortable with Giorgio and love how he goes about solving the cases. This story had so much to it and was wonderful to read. Plus I love that it takes place in my home town of Sierra Madre. I feel like I'm there. Can't wait for the next book.

I have grown to greatly anticipate the next book from Lynn on all of her series. Her style, characters, engagement, story development, and ease of storytelling are simply delightful. On the eve of Halloween and a momentous election I could not put this down. The Giorgio Salvatori series stands as tall as the wonderful Maids of Mercer. I only wish Lynn would write more quickly and more often so I would have more of her tales to read. This is a book and series to put in your collection with Childs, Patterson, Da Silva and Baldacci. Lynn - a great read!!
