A Lasting Spring: A compelling wartime saga Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 331 ratings

A heart-warming family saga! Perfect for fans of Lucinda Riley, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Tracy Chevalier and Fiona Valpy.

’The winter of war is over and gone. Still I must hope for a lasting spring…’

On a May afternoon in 1945,
Evelyn Fawley waits in a Manchester teashop for a man to walk through the door.

A man she hasn’t seen for nearly two years. Her husband coming home from the war.

As she waits her memory roams back to her life before the start of the Second World War.

She reflects on her family life and the constant threat of danger that was brewing on the horizon.

And then on those dreadful years when those she loves were sent to fight.

Her story is one of fractured families, steadfast friendships and broken affairs. But will the man who returns to her still be the same man who she fell in love with?

A Lasting Spring is a compelling saga of happiness and heartache, of the passion of youth and the horrors of war, set before and during the Second World War.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in England in the years before and during WW II, this appealing family saga centers upon Evelyn Fawley, a girl whose life changes radically when her widower father remarries. Dorothy, her stepmother, brings a tide of messy domesticity into the family's new home. She also brings Michael, her son, who is a few years older than Evelyn. The two children prove steadfast companions. Unfortunately, the boy's poor academic record is a continual source of trouble to Evelyn's father, schoolmaster Gilbert Fawley. The ongoing struggle between Gilbert and Michael ultimately leads to a rift in the family. Stubbs (The Northern Correspondent) chronicles Evelyn's adolescence with a deft touch. Both the problems of a sensitive child growing up in a home that is never quite as happy as her parents pretend, and the trauma of a nation preparing for and going to war, are skillfully evoked in this perceptive novel.

A LASTING SPRING by JEAN STUBBS is a beautifully written family saga in which we follow Evelyn Fawley's life from her childhood in 1928 until the end of the second world war in 1945.
The story held my interest from beginning to end. The characters are very real and their emotions well portrayed, and the family's ups and downs are described well by Evelyn, the protagonist. It is a fractured family and the different members deal with what life throws at them in their own way.
I recommend A Lasting Spring to anyone who enjoys a good historical romance novel.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Sapere Books. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

The writer does a great job with Evelyn’s character and keeping readers moving with the story along side her. Looking at the past into the present of post WW2, she reminisces while waiting to see if the husband she sent away is the same one to come home.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by NetGalley.

Another factional historical winner from Jean Stubbs. Authority always shines through in her novels ranging from the Plantagenets to the twentieth century.

Interesting perspective of life and love in Wartime Britain. The Saga of one main Patriarchy and all the inter-related branches.

    I loved this book.
So detailed in it's descriptions of places, family relationships, and how the various personalities interacted together. I felt I was part of their lives.
