The end of the war brings changes to Nell’s life, but her dream of bearing a child is no longer possible and she grieves for what might have been.

About the author

Maggie Christensen writes about mature heroines coming to terms with changes in their lives - women who have learned to live and love in later life and the heroes worthy of them, heartwarming stories of second chances. Readers often describe her books as feel-good reads with people you'd want as friends.
After a career in education, Maggie Christensen began writing contemporary women's fiction portraying mature women facing life-changing situations. Her travels inspire her writing, be it her frequent visits to family in Oregon, USA, her home on Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast.
From her native Glasgow, Scotland, Maggie was lured by the call 'Come and teach in the sun' to Australia, where she worked as a primary school teacher, university lecturer and in educational management. Now living with her husband of thirty years on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, she loves walking on the deserted beach in the early mornings and having coffee by the river on weekends. Her days are spent surrounded by books, either reading or writing them - her idea of heaven!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked the way the author wrote the story and how she wove the story from WWII thru the mid 70s. She told the story of two women living in different countries who came to love the same child due to extenuating circumstances.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBring on the Kleenex! This story had me locked in after just a couple of pages. Discussions of war time scarcities, rape, single motherhood challenges, family dynamic issues are all out there. But all done very tastefully and without sensationalism. If you are a mother or love a mother, it will pull at your heartstrings.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book. I cried through most of it, though I was angry how something like this could have happened. If you choose to read this book, you will not be disappointed. It’s a beautiful story, although fiction, that really could be true.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEach woman who reads this book and is also a mother will know exactly what Rhona is feeling. True, many younger women will have little or no knowledge of the way unwed mothers were treated. This book will delight you with joy and possibly reduce you to tears.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseStory will stay with me for a long time. Just can’t fathom all the tragedy people faced during WWII in England.
