Can Inspector Given lay the ghosts of his past to rest…?
England, 1939
With the outcome of his previous case still haunting him, Inspector James Given is struggling to recover.
Nightmares over his ex-girlfriend’s death are worrying him and he is questioning whether he will be able to continue working as a detective.
On top of that, the outbreak of the Second World War is announced and Given’s Jewish family is at risk.
While Given travels to Europe in search of his uncle, a complicated case arises at home in Kenilworth.
Before leaving, Given had been put in charge of a seemingly straightforward suicide case. But now the police suspect the man was murdered.
As Given returns home he finds himself forced to investigate the brutal killing.
Can Given make peace with his past? Will he be able to cope with the murder case?
And can he save his family from the horrors of Hitler’s regime…?

- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021It’s September 1939, and Inspector James Givens of the Warwickshire Constabulary is having something of an existential crisis. He’s barely recovered from the wounds (physical and mental) he received in his last case, his boss has assigned him the duty of organizing old police case files, his Jewish family is pressuring him to find his missing uncle somewhere in Paris, Germany invades Poland, and Givens is ready to chuck it all in with the police.
He goes to Paris to find his uncle but has no luck. He’s called back home; what had appeared to be a suicide by an Anglican clergyman turns out to look like something else, and Givens is needed to sort it out. The case is difficult; the minister was found hanging in a room behind a brothel. Givens soon learns that this was no suicide. Finding the killer, however, is nothing but a series of dead ends.
“A Patient Man” by Charlie Garratt is the third in the Inspector James Givens series, and it’s a cohesive blend of murder investigation and personal crisis. Givens has adopted an English name and identity to avoid the anti-Semitism which seems as much present in England as it is in Germany. But too many things force the detective to keep grappling with who he is and where he comes from.
And an additional complication arises. In the course of looking for the missing Kindertransport girl who’d been staying with his parents, he meets her music teacher, Rachel Stevens. Rachel is also Jewish; and Givens finds himself doing what he thought he could never do again – fall in love. But er brother expects any potential husband for his sister to be a practicing and faithful Jew.
Garratt is the author of four Inspector Given mysteries, including “A Shadowed Livery,” “A Pretty Folly,” “A Patient Man,” and “Where Every Man.” He also published several community participation guides, until he retired and began writing short stories. One of those stories led to his first novel, A Shadowed Livery. He lives in Shropshire in England.
“A Patient Man” is a good mystery, depicting the frustrations of the job of a police inspector who’s struggling with his own identity. And the threat of war has now become something more than a threat.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2020A Patient Man is the third mystery featuring Inspector Given written by Charlie Garratt. Released 13th July 2020 by Sapere books, it's 271 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book and the others in the series are currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
This is a very well written book, with characters who behave in accordance with their motivations. The narrative arc is well constructed and the clues are presented fairly. There are a plethora of suspects from which to choose and as the plot progresses, figuring out 'whodunnit' is an entertaining challenge. The book, though not highly dramatic or 'thriller'-like, moved along at a good pace and I never felt that it dragged. I was never yanked out of my suspension of disbelief and I felt immersed in the story and had a good rapport with the lead character. The dichotomies in his life, being pulled between trying to fit in with his family and trying to do his work as a policeman in an increasingly anti-Semitic England on the brink of war, were sensitively rendered and well done.
In some ways these books remind me of Barbara Nadel's Francis Hancock series which are set around the same time period. They're very carefully and intricately plotted with meticulously researched and realistic historical settings.
I would heartily recommend this one to lovers of classic British golden age police procedurals. Readers should however be aware of some potentially troubling content (all used in context): murder, PTSD, rape (in flashbacks), suicide, antisemitism, prostitution, and racism. The language is quite clean and there is no direct sexual content. The denouement is satisfying and leaves the potential for more volumes to follow. I'm looking forward to see what's next for Inspector Given and co.
Four stars. Really enjoyable read, an author to look out for. I've liked all of these books and will definitely continue with the series. This one works well enough as a standalone, though I heartily recommend them all.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2020The more of this series I read, the better they are. James Givens is now an old friend, yet each book reveals more of his character, and of those around him. War has just been declared and the world is in turmoil, with James's life following suit. Pulled from pillar to post with his obligations and duty to family and his role as an investigator, he doesn't know which way to turn. This book has James exploring his options, and, along the way, solving the death of a country vicar. As in the previous novels, the plot and storyline unfold easily, without lagging, and I thoroughly enjoyed working out the perpetrator along with Inspector Givens and Sawyer.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020I really like this series. Each book keeps getting better, kept me guessing to the end.
I can’t wait to see what happens next
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2020Charles Garrett did a fantastic job on telling this story about a Detective who has issues and ghosts haunting him. Not only that,World War II breaks out and now to worry about his Jewish family. Such a complicated case he has to solve and the characters are so real, they become alive to you. You can tell research went into writing this story and you can feel the emotions of the characters. Not long winded you follow right along with the story! It's a very much a read for you if you like that time in history, like a detective story and want to help solve the crime! Received this from Net Gallery to read to give u honest opinion of the story and I will hopefully read more of this authors works!

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not deliver on early promise
Not particularly well written, although plot is mildly interesting. Concept is better than execution. Weak in terms of research as the historical context is often poorly presented.

4.0 out of 5 stars not as good as the debut
Not as good as the debit, the plot was thin and it appeared hurriedly written but I like the books enough to give the third one a go although I’m still intrigued as to why a pair of intelligent Jews would have decided to relocate to France in the run up to WW2 knowing what was happening in Germany and aware of the inevitable expansion policy. Hopefully reading book 3 will shed more light on this enigma

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it
Enjoyed this, the 3rd book in the Inspector James Given series. I have read the first 2 and also enjoyed them. Quite a few errors that a good edit or advanced readers could/should have picked up but still enjoyed the story. This book was set around beginning of WW2
