A Raven's Lance Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

There has been peace for near a hundred years. A relative kind of peace, the only kind there can be. I know I haven’t seen a battle in my lifetime. To me, that is good enough.
Someone is looking to change that. The statue of Eleos, the greatest and most sacred monument in all of Narakam, has been destroyed. I wouldn’t care, except fingers are already pointing.
I’ve been made to track down those responsible. To bring them to account. To decide, between peace and war.
Still, I’m a practor. Nothing is outside my discretion.

"A Raven's Lance" is a fantasy novel, and I'd give it somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars out of 5.
I like that the author is willing to take chances with his writing style; punchy prose, instead of the play-it-safe soporific writing so common to the genre. Both the wake-you-up style and the eccentric characters remind me of mid-20th century American detective novels.
I like that the author, James Exarcopoulos, is able to escape the cultural straightjacket that blinkers most writers. He sees outside his own place and time. The cross-cultural touches feel genuine, unlike those in average fantasy novels; something I usually only see in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. And Exarcopoulos doesn't shy away from how hard pre-industrial life was (or even life just 100 years ago); a refreshing change from the suspiciously prosperous folks who populate typical fantasy novels.
And I like that I didn't get bored. Not an objective criterion, I know, but by age 50 most fantasy novels I read seem much alike, so I appreciate it when an author stands out.
A criticism: this reads like a first novel. The author misses storyline opportunities, smoother ways to handle a scene -- that sort of thing. Few authors start consummately skilled like J.K. Rowling. So I'm looking forward to when James Exarcopoulos publishes his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read

Whilst hesitant at reading a book from a first time author in one of my favourite story genres A Ravens Lance left me pleasantly surprised. Through the first few chapters I was critical, wondering whether I could stomach 300 pages of convincing narrative given that I didn't quite understand the authors intent on the first read of some of the sentences. After a while I forgot all about my attempts to be an arrogant jackass, so immersed in this small tale of two people trying to do the right thing in a crappy world, and really enjoyed the book.

If you are after some high fluting fantasy epic along the lines of Feist or Erikson then this isn't for you but I for one am eagerly awaiting the next in this series, impatiently waiting to find out where the characters personal journeys will take them next.

An excellent read and would recommend to anyone. I found the book well-paced for 300 pages and although some of the twists can be seen coming they are still none the less shocking when they arrive. The world in which this is set is familiar yet removed enough that you can fill it in with the information and history you are given and gives you a good setting for the characters and their past. I look forward to hopefully a sequel that continues the two very strong characters journey and relationship.

A great start to what certainly looks to be a fantastic series. The author paints a picture using immersive environment descriptions and gives the characters a real down to earth vibe which makes their story a very easy and pleasant read. It's hard to judge a series by the first book alone but there's great room for this story to progress. The world that's been crafted is something that holds its own ground really well (even in the absence of the characters themselves) which also certainly bodes well for the future!

I could not put this book down. The writer immerses you in the lives of Raven and Lance, practors travelling across lands to unravel a great mystery, and transports you to the world that they are travelling in. The description is incredibly in depth, and makes the reader feel completely involved in the adventures of the characters. The plot twists make the story thrilling, and the ending has left me wanting more.
