A Shameful Alliance: A Regency romance Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 75 ratings

Not all matches are made in heaven …

Some are made by chance.

When Clarissa's father promises her to a lord in exchange for his gambling debts she is tempted to go to London and look for work instead. But a strong sense of adventure inspired by her passion for gothic novels convinces Clarissa to take a chance on the fate set down for her.

Lord Montague must marry or lose a fortune.

The shameful alliance suits him just fine, and he has another reason for accepting Clarissa as his bride, but he's not about to reveal it. Someone in her past will eventually catch up with her, and when he does – Lord Montague will be waiting.

Romance and glamour work their magic to bring this Regency tale to life in the best tradition of Georgette Heyer.

Mystery.Intrigue.Romance

I write romantic adventure novels inspired by my love of history, particularly British.

I was born near Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood, but now live in Australia. From here I re-imagine the fascinating world of the Regency and the Victorians, perhaps inspired by early memories of ancient architecture, cold seas, and snow.

I also love learning Latin (yes really) and the philosophy of the Stoics, AMOR FATI, or LOVE OF FATE. So love and other catastrophes feature heavily in my stories.

Really a surprisingly good read i wasn't expecting much but the book quickly brought me into the story. It was so different and unique i was captivated. I bypassed dinner and bedtime to finish the book. Rarely enjoyable

I was disappointed with the writers lack of understanding of the customs of the time period. The heroine would never have travelled without a maid nor allowed to stay in a household with her fiancé unchaperoned or attended any events without a chaperone. She would have been compromised. Perhaps this is not the writers genre.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the first book by this Author that I have read it is well written and I will be looking for more books by this Author. This is a short fast story to read. Lord Montague and Clarissa's story had me smiling at some of the things in the book and at other times going what a cad. I enjoyed reading this book.

This was my first time reading something by this author. I enjoyed it. Enjoyable hero and heroine and decent secondary characters. Would love to see the hero's brother have his own book someday.

I look forward to reading more from this author.

I think I found a new author to read. Very well written. I couldn't quite figure out why the hero was so distant until the end

As I write this I’m still trying to decide on a number of stars. This writer does have talent, but there was little warmth to the story or the characters to draw me in. There is little dialogue between the hero and the heroine so I didn’t really feel like they “fell in love” at any point (although they did fall in lust). But, apparently they did? Maybe? Who knows?
Their first kiss is him basically branding her as his. Yuck...After that there is some kissing but we are basically just told that it has happened or is happening. This book almost feels like an outline for a play where the actors are given some direction but they are expected to fill in the gaps for us. You know, provide the emotion. But because this is a book we have to fill in the details for ourselves, and that’s not how I like to read. I like the author to paint pictures with their words. I did not get that here, folks!
The hero has absolutely no tenderness about him, even when he starts to soften towards his victim, I mean bride-to-be. At one point he angrily grabs her arm, twice in the same scene, and she expects she will be bruised in the morning. Nice. Domestic violence, anyone?
Basically, he is using her to lure an old enemy out into the open so that they can finish a fight they had years before. And he must be married to get his larger inheritance because his Father knew he would continue to be a wastrel if the stipulation wasn’t in his will, another “use” for our poor heroine. He seems to change very near the end, but I’m still left feeling like I wasted an afternoon.
Ok. So it’s two stars. Writing’s good, ending is ok, but the story, character development, plot, romance and overall feel of the book are all sadly lacking.
    Thankfully it was on KindleUnlimited.

I appreciated the aspect of adventure and suspense in this romance, however I must say that although it was advertised as a "clean" read, I would not consider it such. There were several references to sex and intimate moments described that went beyond kissing. I also thought the couple's angst was resolved too simply in the end, to me it lacked credibility. Just my opinion. In response to the review titled "interesting plot", the lack of chaperone certainly would have made it impossible for Clarissa to break her engagement to Montague (which she had the legal right to do despite her father's arrangement) because she would have been "ruined"; noone else would have married her. Even the possibility of employment as a governess or lady's companion would have been closed to her with a tarnished reputation. In arranging for her to travel and live in his home without a female companion Montague was forcing her...making sure he would get what he paid for. Not sure I think marrying someone like that would be romantic. Just not my type I guess!

3.0 out of 5 stars She was a beautiful pawn in an unholy pact but her sense of adventure and resourcefulness wins out

This "clean" romance has no graphic sex but the male cast exhibits a quiverful of roguish even evil attitudes and the lady is too forceful and self-reliant to truly qualify as a victim. I found it difficult to warm to any of the characters.

The story is good. I read it to the end. I say ‘give it a go’, BUT...
I can’t decide if the writing is naive, childlike, or just awkward, as it has elements of all three. Miles is repeatedly ‘sardonic’ and supposedly moody. Personally, I thought he was just a bit a of huffy bugger too full of himself. Clarissa flip flopped between innocent victim and strong-willed woman but not in a good way. It’s as if the author couldn’t quite decide on one or the other but hadn’t the skill to combine them. The romance was strange. It was straight forward working out when & how Clarissa fell for Miles, but not the other way round.
The big ‘reveal’ was a damp squib - ooooo its Rev Bates.
And the second big ‘reveal’? What caused the years of hate? Massive bore.
No detail. No building of tension. Clarissa is determined to fight one minute then shrugs her shoulders & goes ‘oh well let’s see’.
This a still a draft - not a finished, polished novel. Find a good competent experienced editor & fix it.
