A Single Woman (A Scottish Collection Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 288 ratings

"The thoughtful and touching story of the developing relationship between two rather damaged people."

Isla Cameron. headmistress at an elite girl’s school in Glasgow, is determinedly single, adroitly avoiding all attempts at matchmaking by a close friend.

Widower Alasdair MacLeod is grieving for the wife he lost two years earlier, struggling as the single father of two teenagers, and frustrated by the well-meaning interference of his in-laws.

When a proposed school trip to France brings Isla and Alasdair together, they find a connection in the discovery that each is suffering the loss of a loved one, but neither is interested in forming a relationship,

As their friendship grows, Alasdair struggles with his increasing attraction to the elegant schoolmistress, while Isla harbours concerns about the complications a relationship with him would bring.

Can Alasdair overcome his natural reserve, and can Isla open her heart to love again?

Readers of Christensen’s earlier books, The Good Sister and Isobel’s Promise, will love reconnecting with Bel and Matt while enjoying Isla Cameron’s unique story.

If you enjoy feel-good stories of strong mid-life heroines and second chances, you’ll love this novel by Maggie Christensen. Download Isla’s story today

Maggie Christensen writes about mature heroines coming to terms with changes in their lives - women who have learned to live and love in later life and the heroes worthy of them, heartwarming stories of second chances. Readers often describe her books as feel-good reads with people you'd want as friends.

After a career in education, Maggie Christensen began writing contemporary women's fiction portraying mature women facing life-changing situations. Her travels inspire her writing, be it her frequent visits to family in Oregon, USA, her home on Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast.

From her native Glasgow, Scotland, Maggie was lured by the call 'Come and teach in the sun' to Australia, where she worked as a primary school teacher, university lecturer and in educational management. Now living with her husband of thirty years on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, she loves walking on the deserted beach in the early mornings and having coffee by the river on weekends. Her days are spent surrounded by books, either reading or writing them - her idea of heaven!

After reading and loving The Good Sister and Isobel's Promise, I was happy to read this follow-up and Maggie Christensen did not disappoint. Always thought provoking, she beautifully constructs a love story of a mature couple who find each other in their forties. Isla, the headmistress of an all girls school and Alasdair, a widower with two teenage children slowly and carefully find their way toward each other. The cast of secondary characters are terrific and so varied, but Fiona will always be my favorite. Now that young girl is resilient and a wonderful role model for us all. Great storytelling, Maggie. I loved it!!!

The characters were do real in this series and it was so nice to read a good plot where the graphic sex & foul language was not thrown in !!! I applaud the authors who don't feel the need for that. It NEVER adds anything to a story, in my estimation so if you have a good plot why muddy it up with that, just to sell the book? It spoils the whole thing!

Lovely catching up with characters from earlier books, The Good Sister and Isobel’s Promise - particularly Fiona, one of my favourites. An incredibly resilient and inspiring character. Isla Cameron is the headmistress at an elite all-girls Academy at Glasgow where widower Alistair Macleod’s daughter Fi (Fiona) is a student. However, Alistair doesn't know that when he meets Isla at a Christmas party. Alistair is immediately smitten with Isla and asks her to take a walk to get away from the stifling party. They are attracted to each other, however, they feel they are not ready to take it anywhere else. Alistair is still in love with his deceased wife and Isla is determined to remain single. The party ends and Alistair and Isla go their separate ways until Alistair has to go to his daughter's (Fi) school Assembly where he is pleasantly surprised to see that Isla Cameron is the headmistress of his daughter's school. The attraction grows between Alistair and Isla despite their caution to slow things down. Alistair is worried about the rest of the family’s reaction to his falling in love with another woman let alone Fi’s school headmistress. Isla is not sure she wants to surrender her single women staus once again after a tragic past. Meanwhile, family and friends of Isla and Alistair do their best to change Isla and Alistair's minds. I loved this book! It was such a lovely, elegant, and gentle romance with a non-sexual explicit sex scene that was just as sexy if it was explicit. Lol. I loved that the characters were not wide-eyed twenty-somethings or teenagers not ready for the real world. No. Isla and Alistair are in their mid-forties, world-weary with ”too much” world experience. Lol. I loved the family interference seeing Isla and Alistair made a great couple. I gave it four stars b/c I thought Bel’s (Alistair’s sister in law) point of view chapters was unnecessary. I'd rather have it only be Isla’s and Alistair's point of view. I basically scanned through it. Otherwise, this book is perfect and I will definitely read more by this author. I received this book as an ARC from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.

The 3 books I read in this series kept me captivated until the end. I l9ved the character's and their trial's and tribulations through their lives. The sorrow and the love for one another being a family that helped each other through the path of life.

Maggie Christensen does it again with A Single Woman. A Scottish romance involving a couple in their forties, this time.
It is helpful to read Isabels' Promise, first, as it sets the scene and introduces many of the characters.
Head Mistress of a Glasgow girls' academy, Isla is in her mid-forties and wedded to her job.
She meets Alasdair, father of one of her most talented pupils and they both feel a spark.
Two years ago, Alasdair lost his beloved wife to a post-surgical complication and has been in a dark and lonely place.
Both he and Isla have had to deal with dating advice from well meaning friends and family, but this friendship has been achieved on their own.
And with careful tending, the love begins to grow.
Incidents and accidents will intervene, but in the end, the conclusion is a happy one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from this author
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 12, 2019
I always look forward to reading books by this author and this new novel more than lived up to my expectations.
It was good to catch up with Matt and Bel, characters from two of the author's previous books – The Good Sister and Isobel's Promise. But this time the main characters were Matt's widower son-in-law, Alasdair, and the single woman of the title, Isla.
You don't have to have read the earlier books in order to enjoy this new one, but if you haven't I'd recommend that you do just for the sheer enjoyment.
A Single Woman is a second-chance, midlife romance where the last thing either protagonist is looking for is to fall in love. It's set mainly in the Scottish city of Glasgow, and it's the thoughtful and touching story of the developing relationship between two rather damaged people.
Alasdair is lonely and sad as he struggles to parent his two teenage children while grieving the loss of his wife two years previously. Isla is independent, self-sufficient and lives for her work as head teacher of a high school for girls. And when the two of them meet, although they're attracted to each other, both struggle with admitting they're looking for anything more than friendship. For Alasdair there's the guilt of being with someone new and for Isla there's the fear of opening up about her past and making herself vulnerable.
I loved the slow-burn of this story. And I loved the flawed main characters with all their human frailties and vulnerabilities. I'm sure most readers will, like me, find themselves rooting for Isla and Alasdair and willing them to, for once, put themselves first and take a chance on each other.
