A Step Two Close: A Stepbrother Romance Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 438 ratings

I used sex to help me forget.
To help me numb the pain.
Because for those few minutes of pleasure, I could shut it all off.
The reminders of all that I had lost. All that I had endured.
Of all that I saw die before my eyes.

I slept with a man I can’t get out of my head. It was supposed to be a one-time thing with no attachments and no commitments. No names were exchanged, no phone numbers swapped. And that was fine by me... until I lay awake at night, dreaming about that man’s caress. Wanting and yearning to feel his touch once more.

But one day, my fantasies of seeing this man become an all-too-consuming, nightmarish reality. Suddenly, he is in my house, that cocky grin of his silently promising more to come.

And the reason being? His father is getting married to my mother. We are going to be family.

I am in the seven circles of hell. His look alone consumes my soul and makes me beg for more. He wants me and is determined to get me. I’m his obsession, and I’ve just become a slave to his infatuation... to the games he likes to play. The games he knows will have me surrendering to his will.

But that’s not the only problem. That’s not the only reason I am living in my own personal hell.

The year before I met my soon-to-be step-brother, Hunter... The year I made a decision that will ultimately end up destroying my very soul...

I lost my virginity to Hunter’s dad.

Warning: Contains scenes of emotional and physical abuse. Readers with sensitivity to such subjects are advised to proceed with caution.

Ayden's life changed on the day she turned six years old. In a terrible tragic accident she lost her father, the person she loved most in the world. Now nineteen, her mother reminds her often and harshly that it was her fault. It wasn't of course, but over the years the blame thrown her way from her mother has taken its toll and Ayden believes it. Her birthdays are a harsh reminder of what she lost. On her eighteenth birthday, Ayden approached a handsome man at a bar and lost her virginity to him. They never exchanged names and she never thought she'd see him again. Two weeks earlier she met a younger man who reminded her of him and she had an amazing night. Again no names and she left before he woke up the next morning. Although she's been thinking about the stranger a lot, she doesn't think she'll ever run into him. But life has a way of throwing you curve balls and Ayden had no way of knowing that the two men would be returning to her life. One as her future stepdad and the other as her soon to be stepbrother.

Wow! This is an intense, antsy read. Mason is a really great man. He cares for Ayden but obviously also for her mother. It's awkward, but he and Ayden are able to keep their secret. Hunter is another story. He's not happy that Ayden left him the next morning and knows he's not finished with her. The chemistry between he and Ayden is off the charts and he has no problems pushing her boundaries to make it clear he wants her again. The tension between them is so strong you can feel it as you read each page and you know at some point it going to blow, and it's going to blow big.

The step sibling thing - although it was there - it wasn't really weird because they met before Ayden's mom was involved and I never got the sibling feel from the characters at all. As much as I loved Hunter, he did make me mad a couple times with reactions to situations, but Ayden did too when she assumed the worst of Hunter without talking to him. Secrets kill and this story will show you that while some are worth keeping, others are not.

Overall I really liked this story. You get dual POVs, although most are from Ayden. It also ends at a very nice place which will leave you with a smile. And yes, it's a standalone with no cliffhanger.

I have been seeing Step-Brother romances floating around for a while now, and most often then not, I think they are overrated and I skip them.

But when I read the blurb of A Step Too Close and knowing that it was from the author who gave us Deviant and Redemption, I knew that there were going to be twists and turns along the way. And God, I wasn't disappointed.

Ayden is a character I can relate to so deeply, it was a little frightening at times. She was so strong and yet she never knew it, and having a strong female character is something I love reading.

Hunter was amazing. The alpha male who could make you melt with his words and hypnotizing green eyes. He was a good and caring character, yet sexy as hell - a bloody perfect combination! The scenes between Hunter and Ayden were so hot, I thought my phone would melt or then I would, and Mumbai weather was not helping my case!

Mason was an added bonus, and it was at times, I found him so appealing, I wanted him more than I wanted Hunter. I think older men like Mason are the reason young girls like me have very high expectations.

All the other secondary characters, too, were really nice to read, no matter how much I wanted to throttle two of them in particular. Christian was my favorite from all the secondary characters!

In all, Jaimie has done a brilliant job writing a really good step-brother romance, and I am so glad I waited for this book. It was one of my most anticipated reads of 2015 and is now even one of my best reads of this year! It is a must read for those who like step-brother romances, or not even.

Actually, all romance readers who love twists should read this one!

As a fan of this authors work, I couldn't wait to read this one.

This isn't your typical step brother romance, it has a couple of twists that you will not see coming.

Ayden is a girl that has grown up in a life that is very different from the norm. Having suffered severe loss when she was a young girl. She has learned to adapt at an early age. Using sex as a release and an emotional act, she isn't one of those that has one night stands all the time. She reserves this for once a year where she finds someone on her birthday, no names and no question, no strings sex. Little does she know that two of these men will reappear in her life. One of those men she lost her virginity to.

Ayden's mother decides to remarry and Ayen finds that the man, who popped her cherry is that man. Her new stepbrother Hunter is none other the other one nighter she had 2 weeks earlier.

Hunter is a serious manwhore and is one of those that loves then and leaves them. No repeats. He finds that there is one that he cannot get out of his head due to the fact that she upped and left him in the morning. He needs another day with Ayden, and when finding out she will be his new stepsister the game if on.

There is also a dark element in this book and true Jaimie Roberts style of writing comes out in this.
There are some serious hot and sexy scenes as well.

Jaimie has a way of pulling you into a book from the first page and never letting you go until you have read the last page.

The writing is flawless in this read and Jaimie is really a talented author. I cannot wait to see what she is writing next.

    A Step Two Close

I am fast becoming an avid fan of this authors work. In the last 2 weeks this is the third novel I've read from her catalogue of work and it's the third time she's kept me up reading until the early hours of the morning!!!!
I couldn't put this book down...... Sleep ? .....what is sleep? ........pffft sleep is overrated anyway especially when you've got a book in your hands that won't permit you to leave its magical realm due to the fact it's a freaking amazing reading experience !
So as I say after 3 amazing reads this author has crashed into my zone and sat herself firmly on my radar, meaning I will be checking out any and all of her work ASAP.

This book had me gripped from the start. The characters don't need any time to warm to them I was invested in them, their story and journey from the beginning. The descriptive language and scene settings made me feel right along side the characters for the ride - an amazing feat that few authors seem to get spot on yet for this author made it seem flawless.

Ayden is a young woman that has had somewhat of a traumatic life. Losing her father at a very young age has had a ripple effect on the life she now leads. Her mother is abusive and all she can focus on is the day she can leave the shattered family home.
However her life takes a twist when she's introduced to a new stepfather and stepbrother! Only there's a bigger twist she already knows them BOTH - intimately !!!!!

Secrets and lies, drama and shocks, passion and heat all describe the story of this book.
There are a lot of forbidden romance reads out there on the market right now but don't let this one fall into the same pigeon hole, this book is set apart. The depth and reality of this story brings so much more in its offering. The characters are literally brought to life and the author does a fantastic job of making the real. This is an edge of your seat drama with a lot of cat and mouse games yet also some brilliant banter and laugh out loud humour - which was a wonderful surprise as I expected a darker read from the synopsis.
In short this is a pleasantly surprising fantastic read that I'd 100% recommend.
Thank you Jaimie Roberts for an amazing sleepless night ;)

This was so intense. I was so not ready for this.
    I have so many feelings.
It took me way longer to read it than it should, and I thought about it constantly. Hunter and AJ were so wonderful together, it was such a funny story, but Jesus was it dark. I wish the whole dad thing wasn’t a part of it, because it broke my heart. I’m so mad at this book for making my heart hurt.
    Really well bloody written though.

    Holy freaking crap!
I'm fairly convinced that this author is a genius of the word variety. In fact I'm 100% sure of it!

As soon as I stared this book I was completely engrossed. I was captured, hook line and flipping sinker!

I've read many a step-ro book these past few months, but somehow this was completely different, and honestly one of my favourite reads of the year, easily.

Ayden is just amazing, she's been through so much in her 19 years of life, but she's so strong and determined, irregardless of what she has to put up with at home. She's feisty, witty and just the kind of female character you want to read! The coincidences in this book are crazy, kind of hilarious, but I will admit I felt bad for her, too!

Then, of course, there's Hunter. Well I don't even know where to start with that man. He's irresistibly sexy, funny, dirty talker, just the right amount of cheeky and sweet when he has to be. Perfect! Just effing perfect!

I also adored Mandy and Christian, they're fantastic friends for Ayden and just added something else to the story, definitely LOL moments! As well as 'Awww' out loud & 'Well, dayuuuum' out loud, of course.

I enjoyed this so much I've jumped straight into another book by this author. HIGHLY recommend this story! Can't wait to read more!
