A Time for Witches Kindle Edition
Once upon a time, Lionel Page didn’t believe in magic.
That was before his odyssey to New York City, and the quest for a lost manuscript that ended in mysteries, murder, and the buried secrets of his own past. He used to be a professional skeptic. Now he’s a witch in the service of Hekate, chasing myths across the heartland of a haunted America.
The reappearance of a hero from Greek legend is just one sign of the coming storm. There are Amazons on the highway, and death-spirits lurking in cheap roadside motels. And Madison, Lionel’s lover, is on a mission of her own. A mission, fueled by vengeance, to slay a man who can’t be killed: her ex-husband. If Lionel doesn’t catch up with her in time, neither of them will survive.
In Ghosts of Gotham, Lionel Page opened his eyes to the real world. Now he has to fight to protect it.

About the author

Craig Schaefer writes about witches, outlaws, and outsiders. Whether they’re weaving tales of an occult-shrouded New York in Ghosts of Gotham or the gritty streets of Boston in the Charlie McCabe series, their protagonists are damaged survivors searching for answers, redemption, or maybe just that one big score.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020There are so many details in Craig's writing, you don't want to rush and miss them. Of course, the story is good enough that you could devour it very quickly!
For this book, it felt well balanced between Lionel and Maddie. (If you haven't read the first book in the series, you definitely should read that first, or you'll be missing out!) I think Lionel is working his way to being a legend himself, and I love that Maddie treats him like a partner, not an underling.
There are so many more things I could say but, you should just read the story for yourself. Definitely worth it.
Side note: I love that Craig can have multiple book series going and still manage to make each little universe unique. His characters aren't carbon copies of each other and it's refreshing.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2020Must admit up front that I haven't read The Ghosts of Gotham -- or for that matter any other Craig Schaefer books. The author says in his Afterwards that Ghosts was intended to be a stand-alone. Only 2020 inspired him to write a sequel. Time for Witches also is fine on its own. I'll go back and read Ghosts later. But in the meantime,
I'm glad I read this one.
Lionel and Maddie (Medusa) are creations of epic derring-do that you are warmed and fascinated by. And they aren't by themselves. The Sisterhood of New Amsterdam coven is filled with intriguing characters as is the nomadic Amazon group. And there are actual mythic heroes to battle and and an ancient non-human foe as well. One always thinks of films when you think of car chased. Let me tell you after the Car/Truck/RV/SUV chase in this book the bar is raised considerably. Most anything else one could say about the book is a spoiler - and I don't do those.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2020I read Ghosts of Gotham and loved it, but I wasn't sure the sequel could live up to the original. It absolutely did! More than once I found myself expecting the plot to move a certain way, and it surprised me each time. This is one of my absolute favorites of Schaefer's books - and one I literally couldn't put down, reading it cover to cover to the exclusion of all else. An excellent story, a delightful escape, and much needed during the general dumpster fire of 2020.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2024I am a fan of mythology, and Schaefer is a master of weaving and keeping true to the spirit of lore while pulling the story arc into the modern world. Both the myths have their own challenges and baggage to discard and modern new york still has the ones we daily face. Both the one before this sets the stage and this one ends it in a way which leaves a reader satisfied.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020An excellent story well told though it is a seperate universe from Daniel Faust it still contains some of the same elements.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2020Ghosts of Gotham was a great novel, even by the high bar set by Craig Schaefer's other series, but I think A Time For Witches surpasses it in every way. There's something particularly cinematic about this book (and I mean that in the best possible way) - I couldn't help but imagine how fun it would be to see Maddie's night in a haunted hotel or the battle against the Argonauts rendered in film. Here's hoping this sequel becomes a series of its own; it definitely deserves it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2021Let me start off by saying this is a case of the sequel being better than the first. I read Ghosts of Gotham. It was just okay. I read quite a bit, and I guess my brain decided this wasn't a story worth remembering. When I started this book, I had a hard time remembering who everyone was and what had happened last. Which is very different from Craig Schaefer's usual work- Faust, Harmony Black, Wisdom's Grave, I love these series and have read them multiple times. After reading this book, I think I figured it out. The story was really good. But I think what makes this series different for me is the main character. Lionel is just SO boring and bland. There is nothing unique or interesting about him. All of Schaefer's other books are led by vibrant & unique characters and just as incredible supporting characters. In this series, the supporting characters carry the weight, and it's just not enough for me. I feel like I have read this story before. Usually, Mr. Schaefer's books stand out because they are unique even when compared to other books in this genre. This one is nothing new.
Critiques about the writing- There is nothing that annoys me more than jumping around in time without establishing 'when' you are. And this happened too many throughout the book. It's as simple as writing an italicized date in between paragraphs. It's just poor writing to suddenly have a flashback in the middle of a conversation with no warning.
Craig Schaefer has built an incredible world with Daniel Faust, Harmony Black, & Wisdom's Grave. The details and connections that are in these stories make them my favorite books of the decade and he is my favorite active author. I just feel this series is not anywhere near as good. It seems like he is running out of ideas and trying to recycle them into something slightly different. Maybe if it was officially linked with in the Faust universe, it could be better. Maybe I'm just bitter that we got two Harmony Black books within 5 months, and then this came out, but we were still left hanging after THAT last Faust book. That is one of the worst cliffhangers i've ever been left on, and after waiting a year, and reading this mediocre book, it is my honest and selfish wish that he would focus more on that incredible universe instead of creating mediocre new ones. Also- I swear I remember reading when the first book came out that this series was supposed to be set in it's own universe, completely separate from the Faust universe. It clearly is not. There are links- most notably the witches with the antique keys. It would be nice to have this cleared up!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020Everything had become so dark and macabre in other Schaefer series that I’d almost given up on this author. I’m glad that I read the second installment in the series about Maddie and Lionel. It had a fresh storyline and none of the annoying crossover characters that are weaving between the other series. The ending was on an upbeat, hopeful note and I look forward to future installments.

A force we often forget in this world and sometimes we need a story as a reminder.
Thank you for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
'A Time for Witches' by Craig Schaefer is a well-written and imaginatively woven urban fantasy tale that quickly draws readers in to its twists and turns.
It's the second book of a series and although it could be read alone, I believe that reading the first book, 'Ghosts of Gotham' again prior to diving in to 'A Time for Witches' enhanced my enjoyment.
Both books would appeal to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy and detective thrillers.
Here's hoping for more books in this series.
Thank you, Craig.

5.0 out of 5 stars Craig, this is your best ever.
This is Craig Schaefer's best book by far. The plot, observations and characters are among the most complex attempted by him and they all came together magnificently. A real page-turner.
