Wizards are forged, not born.

Victoria of Ourtown lived through a nightmare to become the ruthless soldier known as Vic the Blade. Once she wished to explore the world settled by her spacefaring ancestors; now she thinks only of revenge.

Prince Ashel's carefree days are filled with music, revels, and dreams of a life with Vic. Those hopes die when the thrust of an assassin's knife drives him to war.

The target of Vic's and Ashel's wrath is Lornk Korng, a tyrant whose schemes stretch across a continent and a lifetime.

A mysterious alien race holds the key to a legendary--and lethal--power. The one who possesses this power would hold the world in their hands, but they might just doom it too.

A gripping tale of empowerment and revenge plays out against a breathtaking backdrop of dark fantasy and science fiction.

A Wizard's Forge by A.M. Justice is the first book in The Woern Saga, a fantasy that has elements of a thriller and sci-fi beautifully knit into its fabric, a compelling tale of war, kidnapping, revenge and redemption.... A Wizard's Forge is a masterpiece and readers will love the way A.M. Justice explores the characters. Victoria is very compelling. Her experience of slavery completely transforms her and she develops a powerful zeal for revenge. But there is something else that happens to her -- she loses the courage to love because she is continually haunted by the gruesome experience of being held prisoner and violated. Her decision to save the prince when he gets captured is an act of bravery that marks a turning point in her journey towards self-giving and inner freedom. This is a wonderful tale with a mesmerizing setting and a fantastic plot. The author has a powerful imagination that brings to life actors that readers can easily relate to. There is a lot of action throughout the story and it reels with great intensity. The complex, intricate plot will have the reader turning the pages. This is one of those books that keeps readers awake into the late hours of the night. It is spellbinding.

Brooklyn-based author A.M. Justice writes fantasy and science fiction the way she dreams her life. So typical of her infectious style of scribing tales is her author’s note at book’s end: A.M. Justice has danced tango beneath the wings of angels, played hide-and-seek with harbor seals, and sought distant galaxies from dusk to dawn. Hiking to a remote swimming hole, exploring an ancient cathedral, and sharing a good meal with friends are among her favorite things, but she likes nothing better than sitting with a cat on her lap while watching a beloved movie on TV. Five books in publication so far she already has been honored as Winner, First Place, Science Fiction/Fantasy, 2016 Writers Digest Popular Fiction Awards, Finalist, Science Fiction, 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, and Honorable Mention, 2017 Reader's Favorite Book Awards.

A WIZARD’S FORGE is said by some to reflect the influence of the fairy tale Rapunzel, and it only takes a few lines to see her heroine Vic in that cast: ‘Vic had never been much of a sailor. When she was a child, the other children had laughed when she bent over the gunwale, paled-faced and shaking—their people were fisherfolk, after all. Now, stomach heaving, she gulped air through her mouth, trying not to smell the stench wafting from her dress. She squeezed her eyes shut and popped them open, as if the bursting stars behind her eyelids could bring real light into the ship’s hold. But eyes open or closed, the darkness remained, filled with sobbing and moans and terrified cries. She couldn’t close her ears to those. Nor could she ignore her wrenched gut, sapped dry by the tossing of the ship but still straining to empty itself of misery. “Don’t think about it,” she whispered over and over, hearing instead the laughter of schoolmates about her white face and shaking hands. Hands clenching her skirts, she clung to memories of jeering. They hadn’t laughed the day she’d passed her exams. That morning, the youth of Ourtown had looked at her with—respect, jealousy, admiration? She wasn’t sure. But being the youngest Logkeeper in history had to count for something. As Martha led her down the jaundstone path, her life had opened up. “Teach and preserve,” Martha said, when she handed Vic her own Logbook. “Until they come,” Vic had recited, so pleased with herself she nearly burst. Yet the rolling misery of the ship’s hold was so real she wondered if her past was a dream. Not caring whether it was, she pulled the memories over her head and let the darkness carry her home.’

The plot is justly complex: ‘Victoria of Ourtown, aka Vic the Blade, walks a bloody path toward revenge. Lornk, the Lord of Relm, will stop at nothing to gain not only Vic’s obedience but utter devotion, while Ashel, Prince of Latha, will sacrifice everything to ensure her freedom. When Lornk captures Ashel, Vic sets out to rescue him, and along the way obtains a power that will ensure the vengeance she craves but may also destroy the future she wants. A Wizard’s Forge is a unique alloy of science fiction and epic fantasy, with a strong female protagonist at its core. Readers will find elements of the classic science fiction of McCaffery, Herbert, and Heinlein, mixed with modern themes of sexual abuse and self-determination.’ ‘Vic’s journey from scholar to slave, warrior to wizard takes her from barren tundras to blistering desert, from a city rife with opulence and vice to a forest of trees that can tell the future. Follow Vic’s path toward revenge and explore Knownearth, the world she calls home.’

Rare writing – a blend of fantasy, wizardry, incorporating contemporary tough issues and resolving them well – indicates that here is an author worth reading and worth watch as she most decidedly will become a prominent voice in her chosen genre. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, June 18

SPFBO 2018 is in full swing. Stakes are high. I try to keep up and read books from all batches. A Wizard's Forge hooked me with an attractive cover and intriguing synopsis.

It's not a classic fantasy as the story happens in the future on a planet far from Earth. Advanced technology of ancestors is long gone, and their descendants fight decades-long war. Shy scholar Victoria knows nothing of this conflict until pirates kidnap and sell her as a sexual slave to the sadistic tyrant - Lornk Korng.

Lornk subjects her to months of psychological torture and abuse. When she manages to escape, Vic joins the army (I totally oversimplify things) that fights her former master. The prey becomes the predator, but in this case, the newborn predator is still deeply traumatised.

Vic is a chilling example of a Stockholm syndrome victim. She suffers both the physical abuse of imprisonment and the severe emotional manipulation that locks her in place when Lornk is involved. Vic's coping with the trauma is the essence of the story. It influences her behaviour, choices and relationships.

There's a lot to like about this story. It touches delicate subjects (sexual slavery and abuse, trauma) and handles them with care. Bad things happen but there's no gratuitous violence or scenes that serve to shock the reader. I appreciate it as way too many contemporary fantasy books try to hide thin plot and weak characterization undernath layers of gore.

Vic and Achel are two enticingly complex characters, and their chemistry is obvious from the get-go. Vic is still coping with her trauma, which makes it hard for her to start a healthy relationship. Achel, meanwhile, keeps convincing himself his feelings aren't that serious, and just when he comes to terms with the reality, a tragedy that will change things forever happens. Watching these two come to grips with reality is emotionally satisfying.

A well-rounded supporting cast includes despicable, but complex villains and traitors, trusty allies, and a princess who is no damsel-in-distress by any means. Every character shapes the story in his or her own unique way, and there are some inventive twists and turns to freshen things up when the storytelling starts to drag.

The world in which A Wizard's Forge takes place is nicely fleshed out and nuanced, with historical and esoteric details rendered in a skillful, but sometimes too detailed way. Having a race of sentient insectoids (Kragnashians) is another creative touch, and Justice’s description of the species and their role in forging Vic's titular destiny is impressive. The world feels medieval although airships are mentioned and the inhabitants of the planet are descendants of marooned space-travellers. Some sci-fi elements, like the Device (a transporter machine that allows an individual to travel instantly between one Device platform and another) are included in the story. There's also a Slotaen - a gel-like substance distilled by Kragnashians from their own bloodthat has both anesthetic and antibiotic properties. It seems creating a wizard involves infecting a candidate with parasites. Exciting stuff.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot crowded into this narrative—some of it interesting and some of it unnecessary. This creates an unwieldy read with erratic pacing throughout. Some of the descriptions and internal monolues were too long and tiring to me. There's also an unexpected time-jump that happens in the first half of the book. I can understand it, but it felt jarring.

Overall, though, it was a satisfying book to read. A scientific fantasy that feels fresh and manages to handle difficult topics well. It's a slower book than the average fantasy, but it offers both - a unique setting and a tale that focuses on character's inner dramas.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking revenge story!
Reviewed in Australia on October 31, 2018
A Wizard's Forge begins by introducing our main character, Vic. She is a log keeper (an honoured profession). A log keeper learns and maintains the last transmissions of Elesendar (a spaceship). But her honourable position changes for the worse when she is captured and sold into slavery. I won't go into too much detail beyond that as I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but suffice it to say her 'owner' ensures she suffers an horrific existence and does things to her that will mar her for the rest of her life (as it would anyone).

With the help of her 'owner's' son, Vic is able to escape her terrible life and finds safety with a new family. From that point on (for me at least), this story becomes one of revenge. Hate filled, anger driven revenge, and I must say of all of the genres (and I even include non-fiction), revenge stories are my favourite.

She discovers a hidden power, but even with her new life, she cannot let the past go, she cannot forgive what has been done to her. She must slake her thirst for revenge.

I really enjoyed this story, it moved along at a decent pace and I genuinely cared for Vic. She is a tortured soul who has known some truly horrible things and even though she may be teetering on the edge of breaking at some points, her terrible past makes her all the stronger for it (where weaker characters would have broken long before).

I will say, I was a little disappointed with the ending, but that says more about myself and my personal preference with regards to revenge stories and nothing about the author, who has executed this story with skill.

A Wizard's Forge is a fantastic novel that dragged me in and held me enthralled for the duration. Highly recommended for any fans of sci-fi, fantasy and all of their sub-genres.

2.0 out of 5 stars first book is ok for a dark ages fiction, then it gets worse
Reviewed in Germany on November 21, 2022
So, if you like “dark fiction” then the first book is what you would expect. Slavery, brainwashing and a dark ages world. There are some discrepancies but they are forgivable given the setting. The first book has sort of a good ending, considering the setting.

However the setting is humans marooned on an alien world. The following books do not portrait humans anymore. The story would perhaps fit aliens that are human adjacent. The military story is terrible, the brainwashing results are unbelievable. The whole thing turns into some sort of syrupy pseudo prince romance with the “broken’ girl pining for him.

Yea she is a hero but she is is not a hero but a weak woman. As a man I abhor such stories about a weak women who are the opposite of Wonder Woman with all the advantages. This series is a sob story for prince loving demure, submissive girls.

If you like weak women who fall for princes, this is your thing. Otherwise I advise other fantasies and SciFi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweeping tale of survival and revenge
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 19, 2020
This science fiction fantasy mash-up blends both genres, but errs more on the fantasy side (IMO!). It’s a sweeping tale of survival and revenge that spans many years. Told from the point of view of Victoria, it follows her as she is forced to continually evolve in order to survive.

Vic is a happy scholar in her peaceful fishing hometown. She’s a keeper of the logs – the diaries of the first people who crash landed on their planet – and is the youngest to have ever been awarded this position. But on the eve of a festival, the town is raided by slavers and Vic is captured and taken to a city in a country far away that favours pleasure and excess.

Once there, she is sold as a sex slave to a powerful man, Lornk. He psychologically abuses her and attempts to break her from her former self and shape her into someone else called Kara. But Vic resists and escapes, only to find herself amongst his enemies.

With a taste for revenge against her former master, she reinvents herself into a warrior fighting against his armies for the country he is attempting to invade and destroy. Shaped by the trauma of being a sex slave, Vic is on a mission. But when her new love interest is captured she must go back to the city – and the man – that enslaved her.

But along the way, we learn that her destiny – and the name Kara – might be bigger than she could ever have imagined. And this is why Lornk will never give her up.

The writing is excellent. I found it fluent and the descriptions vivid. The characters are well rounded and distinct, and I was rooting for Vic throughout. I found the pace to be ‘medium’, not fast/not slow, and the action to be well choregraphed. I particularly loved a scene where the soul of one character ends up inside another character – I thought that was brilliantly done.

If you like epic fantasy that’s a bit grittier or that has an element of sci-fi mixed in, enjoy strong female characters, and longer plot timelines then this is for you!

Which could be great. But to much psycho bla bla ruined it for me . 3 Stars for the writing and the potential. If you like a strong main char / female lead then 50% of this book will be great. But if you like someone with a backbone like Bethany Ann from the Kutherian Gambit series, the many female leads from C. R. Daems or Jenneta Carver from T. De Prima's books then you will dislike / hate the other 50% of this book. It's a pity there is / was much potential here.
