A Writer on Writing - Advice to Make You a Success Kindle Edition
Editorial Reviews
Review
A Writer on Writing by Sally Jenkins is a freelance writer's dream come true. Jenkins says that discipline is the cornerstone of good writing: Bursts of inspiration may never come but you must keep writing. Chapter Four - Open the Box is a great tool that entails grabbing the name of a character, setting, etc. out of a compartmentalized shoe box, tying the elements together and putting your musings onto paper. Devote one hour per day to writing. Enroll in online writing courses. Avoid emails, internet searches and phone calls when writing. You will be motivated to write a novel in 30 days or start a blog. A Writer on Writing has pages and pages of practical tips that can take your writing career to the next level.
I was impressed by A Writer on Writing. As a freelance writer, I have read numerous books on the do's and don'ts of writing. But Sally Jenkins' down-to-earth advice acknowledged the day-to-day obstacles, e.g. juggling family and work, getting distracted and overcoming intimidation when submitting letters to editors by providing realistic solutions. Her style was personable but authoritative. The pace was fast with a format that was easy to follow and concise - just 38 pages -- with lots of takeaways. Jenkins has has published two anthologies. She has written numerous articles about writing for various periodicals in the UK. A Writer on Writing is highly recommended for all writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Written with experience, from experience...
I've read quite a few "How to Write" type books over the last few years, but I enjoyed this one because it was clear that the author was writing from relevant personal experience. Each chapter deals with an aspect of writing which is genuinely important to the modern writer, written in a style which is clear, easy to follow and neither patronising, nor daunting. It might be true that no-one can teach you to write, but an experienced writer can certainly point out some likely pitfalls and useful tips which can improve your chances of getting into print. Whether you've been scribbling for years, or you're completely new to writing, Sally's book will provide advice on technical skills, and ideas for pushing your own writing boundaries. I picked up a great tip I'd never thought of before, but I won't tell you what it is - you'll have to read it for yourself!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow advice from an experienced writer
Having enjoyed Sally Jenkins' two collections of short stories and her blog, I thought I'd give this a go, although I wasn't particularly looking for another writer's guide to writing, as I'm an experienced journalist and writer myself. However, I found this a useful quick refresher course on lots of topics and picked up some handy tips that I'd never known before. Jenkins writes in a calm, friendly, authoritative manner and is a real voice of experience. Highly recommended for new writers and old hands alike.
Why not five stars? I felt it was a bit of a pot-pourri and, as she readily explains herself, brings together articles she's had published at different times in writing magazines. That made it feel a bit disjointed, but it's nonetheless a useful and worthwhile book, and very easy to read and digest. Definitely worth the very reasonable purchase price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLEAR AND HELPFUL GUIDE
Reading this has brought me back with a jolt to the basics of incisive journalism. 'A Writer on Writing' benefits from being clear and to the point. A longer book would lead the reader into identifiying the key ideas, then noting or highlighting them for future reference. But this can be referred to repeatedly as a powerful stimulus to the idle and a source of sound ideas for both the aspiring and the experienced writer.
My only regret is that it is not available as a printed handbook.
If reading these reviews before deciding to download the book - hesitate no longer; read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pot pourri for writers
Whether you are just starting your writing journey or have progressed some way along the trail you are certain to find something in this miscellany of tips to make you think and more importantly, act. I tried reading the book in one go but found I just had to stop to send off a quick letter to a magazine and then to get my work backed up before it met the fate of those featured - something I was convinced I had done more recently than six months ago! I think this is a book tht many will read at a sitting yet return to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Advice you can really follow!
If you’re not raring to get writing by the time you’re halfway through this book then you probably never will be. I turned it into a daily pep talk by reading a section a day at breakfast - it’s the perfect antidote to the frustration of putting writing on hold while minding the kids over the summer holidays.
