- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2021Most of Dorothy Mack's books are really worthwhile, she is an excellent writer, her stories are good, her diction is wonderful, she has a touch of homour and brings the characters, as well as the era, to life. This book is engaging all the way through, and I was almost sorry when it ended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2021A creative plot with interesting characters. Too many Regency novels are predictable and boring so it is always a treasure to find a gem.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2023I like Dorothy Mack's novels a lot, esp The Counterfeit Widow and Chloe. They're mostly well written with interesting female characters working in the limited scope available to women in the 19C. But this is probably my least favorite. I agree with others' criticism that there's a Stockholm Syndrome quality to the romance. Also there are at least two places where a paragraph or page is missing (and you have to figure out how you're with another set of characters).
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2020I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all of Dorothy Macks books, kept me hanging on. I couldn't wait to finish one & start another.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2022I'm with another reviewer who doesn't really get the romance and feels it is Stockholm syndrome. There are plenty of ways to take this premise and not make it so but that didn't happen. HIs confusion just goes on too long. As does the fear in the beginning. I can think of any number of mistaken identity romances but they resolve it early Given the time period could this happen? Yes of course. But why would she want to marry this man knowing how he treats disagreements? Dorothy Mack is often very good and then has some odd problems with men and control. So it was hard to settle back down in to the lighter and love side of it. Not to mention a few more things which were less than believable in how characters would act. I'd recommend a different Dortothy Mack book myself.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2020I read her other book, The Counterfeit Widow, and had quite enjoyed it, and moved on to this one. I was disappointed though - this one read like Stockholm Syndrome, the Romance Novel. There were various bits that didn't feel right for the history too - like the male character deciding to write a long involved letter while riding in a carriage on Regency period roads. The story of the two almost identical women felt overly contrived, and the whole thing was wrapped up in an overly pat way. Was this a very early book of hers? I'll look through some of her others.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2010Short romances of this sort are successful when they utilize their length effectively. The Abducted Bride fails because it does not do this. I realize that the side characters provide the circumstances for the story but they aren't interesting and their inclusion feels very contrived. Desiree, Robert, and a whole host of minor characters do not play an incredibly important role or contribute very much at all yet the author feels the need to throw them all in. There are many moments where Amy and Jason just reflect on their situation or he tests her that could have been cut. Things that set up the plot, like how Jason gets a hold of Amy, who he thinks is his wife, are contrived and waste time. Also, when characters are introduced or a scene begins the author wastes time with the mystery of who the person is, which works once or twice but after a while feels repetitive and a bit irritating.
My main problem is that the story needs to be more heavily weighted in the middle and the end. There is a lot of discussion of fabric and time spent apart but what the reader needs is to see Jason and Amy together so we can believably see them as a couple at the end. She is beautiful. He is handsome. She likes how he sings. He likes that she is good with children and people. This isn't really enough to build a relationship that grows to such a depth of love when they are constantly being pulled back out love by Jason's negative feelings toward his wife that carry over to Amy and Amy's determination to keep from falling for a married man and frustration and hurt at some of his more callous behaviors.
There are a few nice moments, but all in all I think the story could have used more development. The moments when they start to fall for each other, kiss, or display some tension or sweetness are nice but the story doesn't feel like it earns it. Everything is wrapped up ridiculously quickly at the end and the conclusion is not satisfying because of this.
Nevertheless, the story is a nice, light read. If you have the time and nothing else on your bookshelf, you could do worse than sit with this book for an hour or two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mack’s signature style and cool characterizations are always a delight
Who else could serve up the time-worn plot of mistaken identity and seasons it with an identical twin preceding the denouement - to savor for taste and texture? I did enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure and intrigue
Wonderful read from Dorothy Mack, kidnap and regency manners! I loved it and could not leave it until the end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Literally everything about this is messed up.
A lovely young woman is out shopping when some high powered lunatic sees her, decides she's his estranged wife and takes her back to his castle where he physically assualts her and threatens to rape her repeatedly while refusing to listen to anything she has to say, as apparently his previous wife lied to him, and he is stupid. Apparently she is charmed by the fact that he is a violent moron and eventually succumbs to his advances instead of killing him in his sleep, which would have been a more desirable outcome for the suffering reader - I can't confirm this however as I couldn't get past the author's attempts to render rape as "sexy".
