WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS

Fiction has the power to change lives.

Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.

But there are messages within the messages.

There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.

Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.

This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.

THE LOWDOWN

Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.

In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.

In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

    One super read.

This one starts with Daniel Briggs.

Briggs is the best friend and body guard for Cal Stokes, owner of SSI.

Before Briggs attained that position he was a wanderer. A guy who woke up in a barn in Defuniak Springs, Fl. How he got there he has no idea. In fact he didn't even know the name of the Town he was in.

Briggs quickly finds out when three men head into the barn. The men are intent on beating Briggs to a pulp. Seems Briggs beat the crap out of all of them at Pappy's, a local bar. They were hassling a young waitress and Briggs interfered. Now they want him beaten or dead.

Briggs has just left the marine corp and has loads of baggage. He also has loads of training and ability. Training and ability that will serve him well.

The owner of the barn is a Hollis Hernden. Hernden with his shotgun puts the run on Johnny Laney and his two cousins. He also advises Briggs that Max Laney, grandfather to Johnny Laney, owns almost all of the Town hence Johnny Laney belief that he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. Almost everyone in Town is beholden to Max Laney in one way or another.

Herndon also decides Daniel Briggs needs a friend and he, Hollis, will be that friend.

    So begins one great read.

This one has murder, attempted murder, people on the take, an attempt to blame a murder on Briggs, a band of ex vets who stand with Briggs and a Briggs who's more than capable of defending himself and taking it to those who are chasing him.

    Five Stars all the way.

Adrift is the first book that I've read by this author. He pulled me in from the very beginning - holding me captive until I finished the entire book - doing so in a single setting. The author's style is similar to Lee Childs and I could picture Daniel in the same role as Jack Reacher. I found out about the series at the end of the story and Immediately went to Amazon and downloaded the first four books in the Corps Justice series - hoping they are similar in style and just as good as Adrift.

The backside of this story is that the main character, Daniel, is a former Marine who had successfully completed three tours of duty in both Afghanistan and Iraq. His actions there saved many American lives, resulting in him receiving medals for bravery, Now, as a civilian, he is plagued with those memories of former battles and fellow soldiers killed that continue playing out in his mind - PTSD punishing him for serving his country and he turns to booze to stop it all.

After awakening with a serious hangover, Daniel finds himself in a strange barn - angry voices outside alert him that people are looking for him. All he remembers is getting off the bus and going inside of a bar during the rest stop...the bus must have left without him, leaving him with absolutely no idea where he is. Daniel is soon rescued by the farm owner, he befriends the farmer and helps around the property for a meal. This farmer is a veteran of the Korean War - he recognizes Daniels' symptoms and offers himself as a sounding board. One day leads to another...

Meanwhile, both men learn they are targets of a corrupt town family and company of thugs, who attempt to pin the murder of a local waitress on the "visitor" to save one of their own. Little did they know who they were dealing with...Once Daniel is forced into "training mode", he becomes a killing machine, trying hard to make things right for his new friend and the entire town.

Highly recommended! I did hold back a single star because of the number of typos found within the story, but they don't deter from the story and message. I'm looking forward to starting the series and will follow up with additional reviews.

I've read many of C. G. Cooper's books, starting with the Corps Justice. Many books in to the series, I realized there was another series about a character that joined the team a few books in. His name is Daniel Briggs. This series is about Daniel before he knew about Cal Stokes and his group. Daniel is a highly decorated former marine who served in the Middle East, and is trying to drown his PTSD in alcohol. He has a destination in Florida, traveling by bus, but drinking along the way. His last memory is of the bus stopping for a rest stop, and going into a bar, and he wakes up with a pounding hangover in someone's barn. Hearing voices, he realizes someone is after him. Instead of hiding, he confronts them and the insuing fight tangles him with a corrupt but powerful family in a small town. Befriended by the farmer who owns the barn, he finds things get complicated really fast, and he is in for a fight for his life and the people around him.
This book is even more exciting and fast paced than the other books Mr. Cooper has written, and I'm looking forward to the next 3 books in the Daniel Briggs series. It pulls you in from the start, and holds you there. It was dawn before I could finally put it down, but even then it was because my eyes were so tired it was difficult to read. Great book!
