An Advantageous Marriage: A thrilling Regency romance Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 793 ratings

A fun and flirty Regency romance! For fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

The scheming Turville family have met their match…

1816, England

The aristocratic Turvilles had always deplored an unfortunate connection with Trade through the marriage twenty years previously of the Baron’s brother with the daughter of a Yorkshire manufacturer.

But, Eugenia, only child of this marriage is not only an orphan — she is also her grandfather’s sole heir and extremely wealthy.

Keen to keep the Turville money in the family, Lady Turville deigns to overlook her niece’s rustic manners in order to force a match between Eugenia and one of her sons.

But Eugenia is not the simple country girl she was expecting…

Will Lady Turville’s plans come to pass? Could Eugenia fall for one of her cousin’s charms?

Or will she make an advantageous marriage elsewhere…?

AN ADVANTAGEOUS MARRIAGE is a classic historical novel by Alice Chetwynd Ley: a traditional British, Regency romance, set in nineteenth-century England.

‘I would recommend this book and this author in general to those who enjoy the older, more leisurely and textured style of romance storytelling’ -
Regency Retro Reads

‘These vintage Regency romances hover somewhere between Jane Austen and the genre as we know it today. I really enjoy them.’ -

A sweet and lighthearted romance borrowing a little of the style of Georgette Heyer and a little of the gentle morality of Jane Austen or Louisa May Alcott. An easy, feel-good read with enough originality in the plot to depart from the formulaic.

A wonderfully written tale in the spirit and flavor of Heyer and like GH it drops you from the sweet heights of the HEA rather abruptly at the ending. (I've never cared for that in any writer. Having persevered thru the uphill climb I would really enjoy a few minutes on the peak brfore putting the book away.)
Still and all, the quality of the writing took me to another place and time and nothing in the story jolted me out of it the way so many newer regency (and similar) period romances do. As for the romance itself, it definitely takes second stage to the awkward but evolving relationship between Ginny (our h) and her rather self-centered relatives. I will look for more of this author's work.
This is a clean and proper romance - no sex (no proper regency includes porn).

This was an enjoyable book, but really a first draft. If it had been expanded upon in a few spots, it would have been really good. Too many characters without enough to do in the story.

I'm just discovering this author and am wondering if I've been living under a rock. No one does regency imo like someone born in the UK. These older style regencies have so much more in them. I love how the secondary characters get a lot of color and description. They add so much to the story. My next read will be another of Mrs. Ley's delightful stories.

This is the ultimate feel good regency novel. The female protagonist is an appealing and a bit quirky, down to earth heiress who occasionally assumes “vulgar “ Yorkshire accent/ manners to ward off grasping relatives initially intent on securing her hand in marriage—to secure her fortune.

Two very different, competing male protagonists are on the scene of this simple story with, of course, a happily ever after ending.

I enjoyed the book very much. I particularly like Ginny the heroine who seems wise beyond her age. Also Peter showed his Maturity by realizing that old flames were surely dead and a new one burned brightly. I was disappointed with the ending which was abrupt and did not flesh out the characters better. I would like to know what happened with Peter and Ginny in the short future as well as all the characters. I would highly recommend this book to all readers.

I enjoyed this light read. There were no surprises. The book didn’t give a lot of background on the characters, so I never felt like ideally knew them that well. And I prefer not to really care for the rejected suitor - he needs to be more flawed than Frank was. In this case I liked him as well as the hero. But that was not enough to turn me off the whole story though. All in all - a decent regency romance.

I was hesitant to chose this book because of the previous reviews but am so glad I did. It was delightful. The main character is so likeable and even the villains are described so well that there is no confusion. The characters are revealed and there is no inconsistency. So like Georgette Heyer in that there is great storytelling.

Like this author's style of writing. Keeps you engrossed in reading till the end.

Read many of her books now Like that all the focus is not on only two main characters but other characters too have their own story. Would have liked to read more about what the two main characters felt for each other , insight on how the two main ones fell in love.
    The ending was funny.
Was sorry for Francis . Liked him the best.

A wonderful historical romance, a sweet, lovely tale with no need for excessive dramatics. It made me chuckle many times. I had no trouble keeping track of the characters. Very enjoyable escapism.

An enjoyable read with a lively heroine. Slightly weak ending. Would recommend this author if you like Heyer and her 'descendent' authors.
