The Affacombe Affair (Pollard & Toye Investigations Book 2) Kindle Edition
Who in the village has a motive for murder…?
1966, Rural England
When a body washes up at the banks of the river in Affacombe village, the residents are thrown into disarray.
It turns out to be the quiet and solitary matron at the local school: Sister Roach.
But when the police start to investigate it appears Roach’s unassuming demeanour hid a much darker secret…
With rumours of blackmail and clandestine affairs, it becomes clear that more than one person may have wanted Roach dead.
Chief Detective Inspector Pollard and Detective Sergeant Toye are called in from Scotland Yard to crack the case.
Who was Roach blackmailing? And why?
And what hidden affairs drove someone to murder…?
The Affacombe Affair is the second cosy village mystery in the Pollard & Toye crime series: an intriguing police procedural set in rural England.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019Every picturesque English village must have a percentage of residents harboring dark secrets. This time-honored set-up for crime has been cleverly elaborated by Elizabeth Lemarchand in The Affacombe Affair.
The body of the school nurse is found in the river, murdered. She turns out to have been an experienced blackmailer. The local police try to deal with it, but ultimately Scotland Yard is called in. Chief Detective-Inspector Tom Pollard is polite, perceptive, and given to speculation. Though an inspired investigator, he can hide behind a wall of uninspired questioning when he wants to disarm an unsuspecting suspect.
Lemarchand proves herself to be an engaging storyteller as she relates various personal dramas. She is also a skilled portrayer of character.
There is an especially appealing villager who is writing a book on local history and pops up continually in the investigation. Olivia is modestly but shrewdly observant, and her excellent recall of even casual impressions is a great help to Pollard. This serene, unpretentious middle-aged lady who arranges flowers for the church, gives sound advice to young people, and comes to the aid of hysterical friends, is at the heart of the story and contributes largely to its appeal.
I love the Golden Age flavor of this novel. The plot is a good puzzle. The village atmosphere is charming. And the villagers have both modern attitudes and old-fashioned principles. The Affacombe Affair was first published in 1968.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2019I like the development of the characters, the description of the setting and the run of common life all done before the murder occurs. The painstaking setup adds great depth and engages the reader with wanting to know who and why and hope against the evidence it is not one of the characters they care about.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2019Wildly overcomplicated criminal plot with a cast of hundreds to share the profits. Might as well open a legitimate business
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2013This is a typically enjoyable English mystery. It is well written and engrossing. One of my favorite authors. She really gets your interest right from the start and holds it. The main character, Olivia Strode, is very likable and the detectives, Pollard and Toye,

May become a wonderful series to read
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2020But then there was a lot of ground work to cover. I really like Pollard and Toye mysteries - they're old fashioned with a bit of modern methods thrown in to help solve the case.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2018Elizabeth LeMarchand's Classic mysteries are as fresh and as clever as the day they were first published. I enjoyed every minute of this book with its intricate plot and cast of interesting characters. There is no gratuitous sex or violence, just a well crafted classic mystery that you find very hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking murder novel.
The book is a well written absorbing murder with plenty of twists in the plot to maintain the reader’s interest. The scenario is well set with two prime suspects who eventually are clear. The eventual murderer is throughout an unsympathetic character without being an obvious suspect. It’s worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good crime novel with a head scratching plot
The 'Affacombe Affair' is the second in a long series of crime novels written by Elizabeth Lemarchand featuring Scotland Yard detectives Pollard and Toye attempting to solve murders committed in rural Britain in the 1960's. The book is very well written with an intriguing plot, mostly pleasant characters that come alive and no modern day gratuitous violence. Looking forward to enjoying the rest of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars This author clearly likes school settings.
The synopsis does an ok job with this. As with the first in the series ,I just ignored all the total rubbish talked about cozy/Christie etc etc. It is a good mid 60's crime detection book set in Devon/Dorset. There is ,for me ,too much guff about some of the romantic goings on but some of it at least has relevance. Indeed one of the " back stories " is quite poignant and is written with real force.
The alibis are not quite up there with Crofts or Bush but are certainly well done . I found the ending to be quite exciting and the flow and tension in the book is very well maintained . At this price a very good value read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining
Obviously set in the glorious West Country, this charming "whodunnit" has the reader gripped throughout. Blackmail, murder, organized crime, and a touch of romance, truly a winning combination.
