Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Richard Cunliffe was born in Whitworth, Lancashire, in January 1968. Exiled from the north west at the age of two, he grew up and went to school in Leamington Spa, and has since lived in various locations throughout the UK and Ireland, moving home many times due to work commitments. Nowadays, however, he is pretty settled in north-east Derbyshire.

An avid reader and keen writer, one of Richard's earliest (and favourite) writing memories is of winning a national competition for creating a Doctor Who adventure. He was around eight years old at the time (Richard, not the Doctor), and although it took another four decades for him to publish his debut novel, "All These Nearly Fights", he then published its sequel, "Fault on Both Sides", within the following few months. Both books have received widespread acclaim.

Richard's third book of fiction was published in November 2019, and was similarly well received. "They're Closing the Lamb and Musket" is a comedic drama concerning the impending closure of a much-loved pub, and the struggles of its customers to keep The Lamb open even as their personal lives descend into chaos. This novel was followed in December 2021 by another contemporary drama, "Red Leicester Blues", and in December 2024 by the supernatural crime thriller "Good News Week."

Meanwhile, Richard's non-fiction work, "How to Buy a Car", is exactly that. It's a book about how to buy a car, and draws on his several years of experience as a car salesman, enabling readers not only to choose the right car for them, but also to negotiate a great deal.

Richard looks forward to you reading his work.

British author Richard Cunliffe works in sales and marketing, a fact that allows him to live throughout England and Ireland, gathering stories from a large realm of exposure. ALL THESE NEARLY FIGHTS is his debut novel. He lives in Derby at present.

Richard’s experience in sale offers him in depth insights on the role and the life of a salesman – in the case of this novel the salesman is a car salesman. For a snapshot of Richard‘s way with words, the following opens the book ‘ Jimmy Harris just doing his job - It’s no surprise when Ann and Rob ask for a few minutes alone to discuss the deal I’ve just put to them. It’s normal for punters to want privacy at this stage, and I’m happy to give Ann and Rob the usual two options. Either they can remain at my desk while I make myself scarce, or the pair of them can decamp to the comfier chairs in our waiting area. But then Rob says they’d like to talk outside for a while, and I reply that they must be bonkers. It’s starting to get dark out there, and the temperature will be dropping fast. But they’re pretty insistent, and so I let them go, telling them to come back whenever they’re ready, but preferably before one of them gets hypothermia. Promising to be quick, they get up from my desk and make their way out to the car park. I keep track of them through one of the big showroom windows, and when Rob lights a cigarette I finally realise why they were so keen to head outdoors. Mentally, I take my hat off to the bloke. Back in the old days, when I used to smoke, I wouldn’t have lasted this long without needing to spark up. I go through my inbox while waiting for the two of them to return. After deleting a swathe of junk, I reply to a bloke who wants more info about the Impreza on our forecourt, and I acknowledge the complaint of a recent punter who reckons the car I sold him had a nail in the spare. I then forward the complaint to Graham, our sales manager here, asking him what he thinks we should do about it. (“Tell him to do one,” will be Graham’s likely response, although he’ll probably soften his stance if I put in a word before going home.) Ann and Rob are still outside by the time I’ve finished emailing, and so I use up a few more minutes tidying my desk. After clearing away some paperwork, I take the wrapper from my sandwich through to the waste bin in the kitchen. Back there I find Cheryl from Accounts, filing her nails and humming a tune while waiting for the kettle to boil. Cheryl’s normally good for a laugh, and I get her giggling by repeating the joke that Graham told at this morning’s meeting.’ He places us in Jimmy’s psyche and prepares us for the changes that will follow.

Richard has concocted a plot that is so very contemporary and sums it well in the synopsis – ‘Crafty car salesman Jimmy Harris has bucket-loads of money, but also has more than a few problems on his plate. This one-time Jack the Lad happens to have won millions playing the lottery, but is yet to work out what he wants to do with his life or who he wants to spend it with. His biggest dilemma is whether to stay faithful to his gorgeous girlfriend, Charlotte, or try hooking up once more with Isabel, his feisty former partner with whom he feels he has "unfinished business". Then there's the question of whether he should still open up the car dealership he'd been planning with his best mate, Ash. And if Jimmy didn't have enough to think about, he finds himself about to hand over a load of money to someone he doesn't like on account of his slightly barmy ideas about fate, loyalty and kinship. Christmas is coming, and Jimmy needs to arrive at some decisions. Join him for five rollercoaster days in December as he begins to make his choices.’

The language and situations are raw and very well crafted – and this book teases the reader into ordering the sequel post haste. Grady Harp, August 18

All These Nearly Fights by Richard Cunliffe is an intriguing, well written book with a different premise. Jimmy the main protagonist has won the lottery, yet continues with his job as a car salesman. He loves the thrill of making a sale, and how hard it is to get that sale; it gets his adrenaline going. On the personal front, Jimmy has his girlfriend Charlotte, but an ex from the past may just derail his current relationship. There is a lot going on in his life, and he has many decisions to make that will not only impact his life but others as well. Cunliffe has a great way of creating a scene, making you as the reader feel you are there witnessing the action. This along with his ability to create realistic characters makes this book truly a standout as you cheer on Jimmy through his decision making process. A lot of change, a lot of money, and plenty of wry humor make this book unique and sets it apart. Highly recommend for an entertaining and well paced read.

What a fun read! This book feels like a breath of fresh air, it is really something that you can easily pick up, read as much as you like, stop in the middle of a sentence, get back and you won’t miss a thing. It is a story about Jimmy, a car salesman who wins a lottery and needs to decide what to do with his life. There are many influences and other people to consider, like his present and ex girlfriend, friends, co-workers, many things he needs to figure out. I like the dynamic between the characters, they are full of life and very well written. The plot is simple, it goes by fast, it is entertaining and funny, just a very light and lovely book. Can’t think of anyone I WOULDN’T recommend this to, really pleasant surprise, for me at least.

Imagine winning the lottery while you are conflicted about your life’s choices, what to do about your current relationship, or whether you should enter into the business venture that had always been your dream? Well our main guy in this story is Jimmy. He continues on in his job as a cars salesman even though he won the lottery. He hasn’t told anyone about it except for a few trusted friends.
Jimmy is very likeable and not the slime ball you might imagine a salesman to be. This was a nice surprise because it gives us a different view of the cars sales world and that in the end they are all just people as well who want to make a living. The story is more of a life’s drama, could be an episode in a soap opera I think. Funny, witty and cleverly written, the author draws you in and keeps you hooked until the end. The abrupt ending is an obvious choice to entice you to buy the next book, however, the story itself was good enough to do that on its own I think.

I bought this for our vacation home because I have one at my home and I love it, primarily for chopping strawberries for shortcake and eggs for egg salad. This one is not quite as heavy/sturdy as my original but it will get the chopping job done. I would purchase again and I would recommend to a friend. A very handy inexpensive gadget.

Surely we have all fantasised at some time or another about what we would do if we got a large lottery win? I'm also pretty sure that most of us wouldn't let it languish in the bank for months while we carry on with our jobs and work out what to do with it, but that is what Jimmy, the main character in this book does.

And that is part of the appeal, reading the book and wanting to grab hold of Jimmy by the shoulders, give him a good shake and tell him to get his act together. It is also what give the story a bit of jeopardy: is he going to avoid making a disastrous decision or not?

The subject matter and style of writing reminded me very much of Guy Bellamy, whose books usually read a bit like a wish-fulfilment fantasy but contain enough jeopardy to balance that and also contain plenty of witty one-liners. The main difference is that a lot of the Guy Bellamy humour is in dialogue and banter of the characters, but All These Nearly Fights keeps most of its wit in the author's internal dialogue and exposition. The main similarity is that the main character is, for all his flaws, likeable so the story has a feel-good factor to it.

The story does end quite abruptly, on a bit of a cliffhanger. At first I felt a bit disappointed as I was getting invested in the characters and wanted to know how various elements would progress, and then I realised that it meant that this was the set-up for a sequel which I am looking forward to. I am happy to miss out on a chapter that resolves everything if it means getting a whole book to do that.

As a disclaimer, I was sent a free copy of this book for the purposes of reviewing it. Having done so, I would happily pay for the sequel

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Lad Lit
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 2, 2018

I enjoyed this book, it's well-written and jogs along nicely - the plot is fairly domestic with only the occasional surprise, but such was the quality of the writing and that all-important characterisation that it kept me interested throughout.

It takes place over five days in any-town, England, mostly in the downmarket car showroom where Jimmy works, and at his home, which he shares with the beautiful and virtuous but rather bland Charlotte. Few people know that Jimmy won the lottery recently, and Charlotte is not one of them. Before the win, he was planning to start his own garage with best friend Ash, but his new circumstances have affected his plans - and so have the feelings he still has for the gorgeous and fickle Isabel, who broke his heart.

I've read a fair bit of lad lit over the years, and notice that the heroes tend to fall into two categories: the cute nerd who makes a big deal out of the lyrics of songs and is trying to win back the heart of a girl (often called Laura), or the more swaggering jack-the-lad who cheats on women and calls his friends 'mate', 'buddy' and 'Big Man' every time he talks to them. Jimmy Harris belongs to the second crew, which makes for a livelier read. The other truism about this genre is that the women fall into two basic types: the beautiful, good-hearted and bland, and the sexy-but-a-bit-nuts. Kind of the Madonna-whore thing. Charlotte is the former, while Isabel is the latter. Jimmy spends his time swaying hither and thither in his feelings for the two of them.

The characters who work in the showroom are great, very real, and the sales scenarios were totally realistic; even though I know nothing of this world, have zero interest in cars and loathe sales patter, I really enjoyed reading this side of it.

I was a little disappointed to find that the book ends with no wrapping up of any of the storylines, to be continued in Book 2, Fault On Both Sides, because there is no indication in the blurb that it is not a complete story. I like continuing stories and am happy with cliffhangers, if I know what I'm getting, but it is not listed on Amazon as part of a series, either. I turned the page expecting to carry on reading, only to see 'The End'. However, I liked it enough to download the sequel on Kindle Unlimited, which speaks for itself about the quality of the book; I do want to know what happens!

It's a sound debut novel; I would suggest that Mr Cunliffe adds the term 'Lad Lit' to his keywords to make it show up in this category on Amazon, and also lists them as a series, with an indication in the blurb for this one that it is only part one of the story. At £3.48 for the pair they'll hardly break the bank, and they're available on Kindle Unlimited, too. Yes, I recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lottery Nightmare!

Jimmy is a good car salesman who is climbing the ranks at his job - giving Rudi, the top salesman working at the showroom, a run for his money. Jimmy has polished the 'art of the deal' and knows just when a punter is ready to part money for a used car. And he's likely to win the cash bonus on offer every Christmas to the firm's top salesman. His lovely live-in girlfriend Charlotte is a school teacher. Life is pretty good. But Jimmy has a problem: and it's one most of us have dreamed of having. Jimmy has won the lottery. In fact, he's got nearly £4 million sitting in his bank account. As we join Jimmy's story, that money has been there three months - and he's told nobody except his best buddy Ash, with whom Jimmy had hoped to eventually start a business. At least that was the plan before the lottery blew Jimmy's life blueprint to bits. And he has a second problem: Isabel. Isabel is his former girlfriend of 8 years, who dumped him 3 years ago for a hotshot lawyer with a big salary and a flashy style. Jimmy has Isabel on his mind, and isn't quite over her. Charlotte is lovely, but is she the one? Or could the flame with Isabel be re-kindled? These two problems converge and drive Jimmy's story to its dramatic conclusion - which does beg for a sequel. Richard Cunliffe has a great ear for dialogue and has captured the amusing and snappy banter of the staff at the car dealership where Jimmy works very well indeed. By the end of the book I had grown rather fond of all of them - from the comely Emma whose long legs and great figure give her an unfair sales advantage... to the grumpy, no-nonsense boss Graham... to the hopeless dogsbody Kev... to the mysteriously under-performing Carl with both a weight and an attitude problem. And best of all I liked Jimmy, whose hapless hesitations are forgivable as he's also smart, funny and kind. I liked this book and can recommend it as a quick, entertaining read - as well as an insider look at working life in a car dealership. There's more going on than you might imagine!

All These Nearly Fights by Richard Cunliffe is a book that has the reader hooked from the beginning.

The book gives the reader the insight on how Jimmy the main character wins the lottery, something we all dream of and how he has yet to work out what he wants to do with his life or how he’s going to spend it. His biggest dilemma is who he wants to spend the rest of his life with, should it be with his faithful girlfriend Charlotte or his feisty ex Isabel that he feels there’s still unfinished business with. His love life isn’t the only thing he has to think about, does he continue with the plan to open a car dealership with his best mate as the original plan was. All this happens in the short space of five crazy rollercoaster days in December before Christmas.

I think most of us would have just quit our jobs and moved to someplace sunny if we’d won that amount of money, the book took the reader on a rollercoaster that from the write up seems chaotic and tiring but it really was quite funny and had the reader from the first page.

Would recommend to anyone I really loved it.

First off - I really enjoyed this book though I’ll admit is not the genre of novel I usually put in my ‘basket’, because it’s from the male PoV. I’m not certain why I resist, because I have read and enjoyed Mike Gayle, Mark Haddon and Graham Simsion; perhaps my problem is I feel ‘a foreigner’ when I’m made privy to the male mindset. What do they call this genre anyhow? Bloke-lit maybe?

The central character, Jimmy Harris, is very likeable, so while he’d probably describe himself as ‘jack the lad’ there’s a heart of gold in that car salesman’s chest. The reader gets an insight into the salesman’s mindset as Jimmy vies with his colleagues to win a monetary bonus for selling the most cars this month - the lead up to christmas. Jimmy is a listener too, several of his co-workers come for advice on life and love and he’s considerate and savvy with his feedback.

Jimmy himself has been victim of a painful break-up, but is currently in a relationship with a wonderful woman yet, ever the perfectionist, Jimmy is fretting whether she’s ‘the one.’ This is a key factor because Jimmy’s cheerful, hardworking exterior hides a big, life changing secret … a big Lottery windfall which he’s not sure how best to use. It’s a dilemma we’d all love to be troubled with, but Jimmy is obsessive about getting his ducks in a row before he takes the big step of sharing this information - for the majority of the book only 1 of his friends knows his secret - let alone putting his winnings to work.

It seems life has a lot to teach Jimmy while he ponders how to take the next steps, he’s on a rollercoaster ride regarding his love life, his entrepreneurial plans and the loyalty and commitment of his friends. The book had me gripped, second guessing what Jimmy would do, what he’d get right and wrong and whether he’d heed the good advice that comes at him from every angle. Will he hook up with the girl he used to love, but who treated him so badly? Should he become a high roller? Or alternatively help ‘underdogs’ with his good fortune?

You can’t help thinking you’d do in Jimmy’s situation as you read, and I found myself charmed and entertained by our hero in equal parts. My only criticism, and I have e-mailed the author with my disgruntlement, is that I must wait until book 2 to know exactly how it all pans out, because this book ends on a real (East Enders) duf duf moment! However, I’m all the more keen to read what Jimmy does next! I can’t think of any books about which I can say: if you enjoyed that, you’ll enjoy this, but I can suggest some TV shows: Channel 4’s White Gold (about the highs, lows and craziness of double glazing salesmen in the 80s) or From there to Here where Philip Glenister is a man who survives an IRA bomb and consequently tries to live his life to the max (and embarks on a double life). Fans of those shows will surely enjoy this book and see some similarities; but for a page turning, humorous read which keeps you guessing, this novel won’t disappoint.
