Dead State: Fallout is the first book in a new post-apocalyptic survival thriller series.
Final Rating: 5 Stars
That doesn't detract too much from the story and I do want to read the rest of series too see how things turn out. I deducted a star due to less than stellar editing. There are a few too many misused words, apostrophes that shouldn't be there and grammatical mistakes for my liking. In my opinion it doesn't kill the story but it does detract from what could be an excellent story.
I prefer more mature reads with salty language and adult action and themes so I may be a bit bias because of that. This book is very appropriate for the young adult crowd and definately reads like it. B.C. Archer does a fair job of narrating but comes off as somewhat robotic. I think it's a combination of how the book is written and his lack of inflections. Archer's narration is very articulate and clear but lacks certain tones, inflections, and pauses in parts of the story that need it. There also appears to be a lack professional editing throughout the book. The errors interrupt the flow of the book. There's a mix of grammatical, punctuation, and word usage problems. These are distracting. For those who are a bit OCD-ish, like me, you may have a difficult time getting through the book. There are a lot phrases and words that are repeated throughout the story as well. For instance; I don't need to know how often James' dog or a chaser has bad breath or "groans".
The story line and overall idea is a good one but is overly simple and linear without much character development. The main character is plopped directly into a ZA with little science or back story. James, a 15 yo boy, seems to deal very well with the world suddenly and literally ending around him. He gets over losing loved ones fairly easy as well. Maybe the violent video games and movies have desensitized him? We won't really know. I would have liked to get to know the characters better but there's little info about them. There's no side stories, relationship dynamics, love interests, or interpersonal conflicts. This creates a story that goes zero to sixty in 3.3 seconds and then it's done. It also makes the characters forgettable. The pro to this con is that it makes for a quick, entertaining read if that's what you're looking for. Like watching a John Wick movie, you come for the crazy, mindless, action packed entertainment not necessarily for the cerebral challenge. If you're the kind of reader that thrives on having your imagination engaged and your intellect challenged this is probably not the book for you.
To sum it up: I was entertained (which makes it worth the purchase) but my imagination wasn't particularly engaged. I was somewhat dissapointed with the lack of character development. The lack of proper editing was a distraction. I am recommending buying the paperback or e-reader version because having some control over narrating it yourself with the appropriate pauses and inflections will make the story better. I don't recommend the audible version. I look forward to the next book simply for the entertainment factor.

My only qualm is that I wish there was more to stand this out from all the other zombie survival stories. Curious to see if that happens in the later installments. I have a strange feeling that the author has left some breadcrumps in this book, so I feel this book's worth is going to triple when I discover those connections later in the series.
This story scratches the survival story itch. It's adventurous, real, and overall a solid read. The writing stays on the safe side, and sometimes leaves a bit to be desired for description, but overall the style pushes the pace and I am thankful for that.
Can't wait to start book 2.

I enjoyed the book and can definitely recommend it.
