Eden Underground: Poetry of Darkness Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

Another snake, another tree, another Eve.

A Bram Stoker Awards® winning dark poetry collection from Italy’s Alessandro Manzetti.

Eden Underground is a surreal journey into obsessions and aberrations of the modern world and its darker side, which often takes control of the situation. Madness, violence, aberrant sex, war, hallucinations, sadism, disturbing archetypes: these are the black fruits of human loneliness, these are the bloody roots of Eden Underground.

In this untold world, men and women build their deformed, artificial underground Eden, where they can unleash their dark side.

Death is the hidden queen of these strange places designed by human alienation: harem of silicone dolls who come to life, abandoned warehouses with copper tubs full of broken pieces of Eve, a bloody collection of copies of the first primordial woman, imaginary worlds inspired by the ghosts of the drug, small Eden dug into the bowels of the sand of war, trenches for refuge from too much horror, the religious fanaticisms and their heretics and violent Eden stained with blood, open air glittering brothels turned into landfills of souls and lost loves.

Haven't you ever heard the loneliness knocking at your door? Or the steps of our dark side, freed from the body and the cage of our conscience, that is coming to take us with a shimmering cleaver in its hand? In Eden Underground you can hear all these ghostly noises, too real, too close.

Blurb Three stories. One terrifying truth: we are not alone! In this supernatural creature feature, the fight against nature’s deadliest predators becomes a fight against something far darker lurking in the depths. A suicidal nudist strolls into traffic. An eccentric Buddhist claims he can occupy other people's bodies. All the while, whispers of a new form of entertainment blow through town. Not your typical zombie novel, Revival Road is a fast-paced thrill ride of horrors human and supernatural, an exploration of the dark underbelly of suburban life, and a testament to fears elemental and otherworldly. A deadly secret, a twisted mystery, and a woman determined to uncover the truth—before it kills her. She wanted nothing more than for Halloween to be scary again...she would soon find out that the mind is a powerful thing.

    Lucifer, the Beast,
    shows the man the rooms of Hell;
    the swollen corridors,
the chandeliers made of bone and onyx,
    the black bulbs,
    screwed cancers,
    ten per group,
    ten per room.
The metastases of the bottom of the Earth
    lit by darkness.
    Excerpted from The Tenth Circle

Poetry, it’s an odd genre. When you mention the word to someone, some think of rhyming words or fluffy verses; to others it may be that stuff you had to sit through in English class. And then there are those who have read Edgar Allan Poe and know it can be so much more. Alessandro Manzetti dispels those thoughts of the uninitiated; his dark verses bring poetry to an entirely different level. The title, Eden Underground, says it all; it is not at all the garden you thought you knew.

As you begin to read, you’ll find that the words flow like magic; a dark sensuous musicality intertwining with the visions in your head. Deceptive titles like Green Apples, Eastern Heaven, Lacrimosa, and The Garden, hide the reality of the prose. These poems allow one to glimpse the desolate underbelly of humanity without dirtying themselves.

When I was first given this book I thought “Okay, I’ll read a few poems now and perhaps a few more later.” Instead I found I couldn’t put it down. So intense is the writing that I had to keep reading. If you have never read a book of poetry before or if you never thought you could be a fan of poetry let this book be the one to introduce you to the words of verse. Alessandro Manzetti is mesmerizing, so much in fact that I just bought Venus Intervention, an earlier book of his poetry co-authored with Corrine De Winter. I am not disappointed!

It would be remiss of me to not address the eye-catching cover; it’s brilliantly done by Vincent Chong. It evokes visions of despair, I want to look inside and see what is being kept within. Oh, and I am pleasantly surprised! There are striking illustrations scattered throughout the pages by Paolo Di Orazio. And of course, I must mention the back cover work is done by none other than Ben Baldwin.

Truly this is not a book to miss. This review was also posted on horrornovelreviews.com.

Alessandro Manzetti is a master at creating worlds with the music of words. Dark worlds where nothing is what it seems. Where shadows are deep and the light is too bright. Brutal worlds where suffering is real and the worst of the worst waits right around the corner. These poems — beautifully written with a skill that, at times, borders on brilliant — take you by the hand and drag you into these fearful places and then, sometimes, drop you abruptly in the middle of the maze, after yet another hairpin turn, leaving you to stumble as you find your own way out. That’s what great writing, and great poetry, should do and Alessandro does it well.

But it’s what happens after the poem, after you’ve closed the book or you’ve plugged in your Kindle to charge, that makes this worth the read. Manzetti’s words haunt you. You’ll find certain phrases sneaking into your thoughts. “flesh trophy” “scepter of bones” “the mollusc of your white pearl soul” The rhythmic play of the words. The syncopation. The inescapable visuals they slam you with. And, curious, you’ll find yourself revisiting the page, convinced there’s more to discover beneath the words. Eager to see what you might have missed.

And that’s where it gets good because Alessandro’s poems, at first glance, offer you only the surface of what he’s creating. But it’s like an onion, what you first see only the top layer. But beneath that first read wait many other layers, like levels in Hell. Layers of thought, of dread, of fear, of redemption and regret. Of the worst of the worst of us. Wounded souls captured in Alessandro’s stanzas, eager to sneak through the cracks and follow you into your waking life, like shadows. Or ghosts.

This is the brilliance of Eden Underground. And this is why it’s a work I’ll be revisiting again and again.

Alessandro Manzetti summons a darkness that will haunt you long after you put the book down. Eden Underground: Poetry of Darkness is a beautifully eclectic collection. Each poem offers a different terrific visual that is sure to give you goosebumps and make your flesh creep!

I'll be the first to admit that poetry is usually hit or miss - This collection is definitely a hit! The first thing that sets this book apart from the rest, is Alessandro Manzetti's uncanny ability to weave chilling images into the reader's mind. These images refuse to leave, flashing over and over again until they consume you. This book isn't just words on a page, it's a journey through fears, adventures, and heart pounding suspense.

This is by far one of the best poetry collections available. Poetry, specifically horror poetry, is an art form and Alessandro Manzetti has mastered that art form. I was blown away by the rich poems, vivid versus, and emotional rawness there is to each of these poems.

It's a fast read and surely one you'll return to time after time when you're looking for that surge of adrenaline.

This is horror poetry at its best! Nothing in Eden Underground: Poetry of Darkness is made to look like there might be a good side to it. Alessandro Manzetti shows the depravity of the human condition, and displays it with total honesty. When Alessandro tells of prostitution, death, and depravity, he shoots from the hip and his aim is true. Dark, intense, and disgusting jump out at you from the pages, the revolting truth surrounding you, pulling you in even though you wish to escape. But there is no escape, not even when you have finished this outstanding collection, for your mind cannot expel what has been absorbed. Sleepless nights? Yes, you will have many. But that is why you read horror, is it not?

Alessandro has done his job exquisitely. Horror poetry is alive and well.

I have not read much poetry previously, outside of Robert Frost. I love dark fiction. No other genre comes close to bringing out so many different emotions. Crystal Lake Publishing are a superb source for your dark fiction needs. This collection of macabre poetry is absolutely top draw. Poetry can often be difficult to visualize for myself. Not so with this collection. Each poem was easy to read and wonderfully dark. I cannot recommend this enough. Fantastic. 5 stars.

Whether this is the first time you have delved into the world of dark poetry or you are a regular reader of this genre, this is the book for you.
So fascinating and well written, I read this wonderful book in one sitting, only realising it was four in the morning after I had read the last line!!
Alessandro shows great depth of feeling in his writing and has the ability to whisk the reader into another world. If the last time you read poetry was very reluctantly at school, I urge you to open your mind, forget the dull and dry as dust poetry fed to us back in the day and read this amazing book. Dear reader, you will not be disappointed.

Horror and poetry may seem an odd combination – and one which won’t work – but this new collection demonstrates that this simply isn’t true. Alessandro Manzetti’s poems take you to some very dark places and create a real sense of horror and unease. Congratulations to Joe Mynhardt and Crystal Lake for making the decision to head off in this new direction.
