- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA flawed hero, a police officer having a midlife crisis, a very twisted family, a vicious villian, voodoo, and more than one big twist at the end. All of this is happening in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.
I have read a couple of other books in this series and also enjoyed them.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA twisted web of lies, deceit, and adultery, mixed with an old, powerful, voodoo curse from a powerful mambo, throws some lives into a spin. FBI’s most wanted, a priest, a prestigious millionaire, a cop, a sexy model, a defrocked priest, and a couple of mambo’s lives are hurled into a whirlwind of ‘who did it,’ ‘cat and mouse’ game that is lethal.
Eric Wilder shows genuine mastery of writing as he weaves a New Orleans style tale of paranormal suspense of a forbidden love triangle that will blow your mind!
This book has so many various layers you as if you’ll losing your mind. However, stick with it, it’s a fantastic read. I have never read anything quite like it. Eric does a magnificent job of taking his readers into the festive, craziness of Marti Gras while taking them into a world of the spirits and lives of those who have secrets that are real killers.
If you like mystery, suspense, and paranormal reads, this one is definitely up your alley—you won’t be disappointed.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love New Orleans and consider it an adopted home away from home. Of course with its old world charm, spooky tales of days of voodoo and its exotic feel it is the perfect setting for a mystery. The author captures the quirky, weird vibe that is New Orleans with a hint of danger and urban grit. Toss in the spooky underpinnings that run through the city and you have a great fast read! Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOnce again Eric Wilder takes you on a roller coaster of intrigue set in that exotic, erotic mecca known as New Orleans. Having read "Big Easy" which introduced the reader to an engaging cast of characters that left me wanting more, I had to get Book II (City of Spirits) in this series. I'm so glad I did. While oftentimes, a second book falls flat, this one did not. Eric Wilder is a master at interweaving numerous plots and speeding you along through twists and turns as they all meld together to culminate in yet another great read. On to "Primal Creatures" Book III in the series and I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hm. Not sure about this. Lots of light and lots of shadows. Would give it 2,5 stars.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the second book in the French Quarter Mystery Series and I liked it a little better than the first one. Not sure, though, if I will read the next one. Good things first: The author seems to know New Orleans pretty well, he describes the places, food and scenery lively and I loved every bit of it. Second thing that kept me going: The story is nice, with enough suspense and it never gets boring. Why only 2 and a half stars, then? Well, the people in the book act strangely, at least for me. More often than not I kept rereading several parts because I thought, I missed a clue or something, but I never did. I could not once comprehend, why the characters did the things they did, be it making love, praying, or anything else. During the first book I was not sure if it was the New Orleans Spirit (never been there, but would love to) I am not familiar with. But in the second book I recognised it had to do with the writing. The author never describes any feelings, so you just don't get into touch with the characters, they stay hollow and strange throughout the whole book. I wish there had been a good editor to draw the autors attention to this. It would have been a real great series.
