An Eligible Gentleman (The Eversley Saga Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 660 ratings

Fall in love with this charming Regency romp! For fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

Has the headstrong Eleanor Denham finally met her match…?

1808, England

Though charming and wealthy, the
Honourable Frederick Eversley is a confirmed bachelor and has no wish to settle down.

However, his aunt,
Lady Chalgrove, is eager for him to marry her beautiful but timid daughter, Phoebe. Hoping to bring them closer together, she sends a reluctant Phoebe to London for the season.

Knowing that Phoebe is already in love with someone else, family friend
Eleanor Denham cooks up a plot to present Frederick in a less favourable light to Lady Chalgrove.

Unaware of her motive, Frederick misjudges Eleanor as cold and calculating. And when she too is sent to London for the season, sparks fly every time they cross paths.

Both proud, headstrong, and fiercely independent, Eleanor and Frederick cannot help being intrigued by each other. And as the season wears on, it seems that their stormy acquaintanceship may blossom into something more…

AN ELIGIBLE GENTLEMAN is the fourth book in The Eversley Saga: Traditional British, pre-Regency romance novels with outspoken, feisty heroines set in Georgian England.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the Eversley Saga and thinking this might be my favorite in the series so far. So glad to have discovered Alice Cheyene Ley—her stories are fun and a little old fashioned which suits me to a T. If you’re a Regency fan, do check out Ley.

This is a fast read, covering the usual Recency basics. The characters are well done and interesting and the plot evolves in a charming manner

I enjoy reading an Alice Chetwynd Ley Regency romance the way I enjoy toasted cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. They're unremarkable yet so very comforting. And who doesn't need a little comfort right now? (Especially if you live in Florida, like me.)

Alice Chetwynd Ley was a British writer (1913-2004). She was a contemporary of Georgette Heyer (1902-1974) but never became as famous as Heyer, although I do enjoy some of her stories quite a bit.

This one is the fourth in her Eversley Saga series. Book #1 was first published in 1967, #2 in 1968, and #3 in 1971. This #4 has a publication date of 2021, strangely enough. Obviously that's posthumously, but was it ever published during her lifetime? I could not find that out.

Whatever the case, it has been so long since I read the first three books of the series that I remember very little about the Eversley family and friends. It didn't matter. This can be read as a standalone.

I won't bother with talking about the plot. It's there in the product blurb. It's quite slim and not at all unusual, but it's fun and it's a romantic Regency comfort read.

This is of the old-school variety. You barely get a kiss out of this couple, but I'm perfectly happy with the kind of romance that gives the couple post-book privacy to consummate their love. I enjoyed the book's good writing, fun dialogue and excellent grammar. Oh, good grammar! Such a unicorn for me in romance novels.

Yes! In a sense. This was obviously written years ago, and is more a novelette than an novel. But what a find for her fans! As one previous reviewer has said, nobody does the Regency period better -- not even the Queen of Regencies, Georgette Heyer. Buy every Ley book you can find. You'll thank me later!

Cute. Better than most of the modern clean regency romances. Simple. But I also thought that Eversley’s parents were both dead? The last book had a father suddenly and now this has both parents alive lol

I especially liked this story. No villains, just misguided, mistaken humans. All turned out in the end for three heroes and heroines!

If you’re looking to while away a lazy afternoon with a story that will keep you engaged without churning any deep and disturbing emotions, this is just the book for you. Genteel manners, genteel characters, and a story as smooth and gentle as a babbling brook.

Take the load off your feet and relax with this book in your hands and chilled lemonade or tea close at hand. Happy reading!

A diverting story of misunderstandings, romance and society. I found the relationship between Nell and Frederick a little undercooked but they are very likeable characters.

I have become a serious fan of the style and characters of this estimable author since coming across her books on kindle, which I believe we owe to the care of a surviving family member. Many thanks!

I have read the majority of this author’s books and have enjoyed every one. Her writing is intelligent, informed and the characters/plots always interesting. Would highly recommend her to anyone who enjoys Georgette Heyer and other other historical romance authors of quality. This book is good, though not quite as good as others she wrote, but only by a small margin! The story line is slightly less believable in relation to the ‘hero’ and his history, but otherwise up to her usual excellent quality.

I like the style of writing.
    But
Less of romance . No mention of how the main characters fall in love . At the end they decide to marry each other and we just have to accept it . But all the other incidents that happen make it a story fun to read.
