Editorial Reviews

Review

"To call Labyrinths of Time a time-travel odyssey per se is to do it a grave injustice. Wound within this story of fate and heroism is a tale of choice, consequences, and selflessness and selfishness alike, designed to keep readers thoroughly engrossed right up to the unexpected conclusion. . . . A supercharged story that is just as compelling and hard to put down as its predecessor, and very highly recommended as a standout read." - Midwest Book Review
"The mood of this book is darker than its predecessor. There is depth, intensity, and emotion woven into the characters, setting, and plot, making everything and everyone feel on edge. The best part of continuing the series is the clearer, deeper look we get of the characters. ... In Labyrinths of Time, no one is safe from the power of the ancient relics that haunt the Andromeda galaxy. Erickson masterfully intertwines magic, dream-like states, and technology to create a fantasy heaven." - Book Review Directory

The genre is sci-fi but the most imaginative aspects of this book are the ways people relate to each other and other species. That's not to say the science fiction elements aren't great - they're delightfully inventive, original, and well rendered. But the really wild part of this book is the vision it presents of a possible humanity, one driven by empathy, respect, and understanding. It's a vision that is all the more startling and refreshing when juxtaposed with American society at the moment. The book instills hope because the interactions among the characters feel real and attainable. Perhaps in the 25th century we will elevate ourselves to the humanity depicted in Labyrinths of Time.

I was so excited about this sequel after reading book 1, which was absolutely amazing! The second book, in my opinion, was not as good as the first, but still extremely worth my time and I enjoyed it. I definitely would recomend reading book 1 before this book. The first book kept me fully engaged from page 1 until the very end. The sequel took me a bit longer to get into as the first 1/3 or so of the book was spent providing background, flashbacks, and more information on the supporting characters from Book 1. However, because I was so invested in each of the characters after reading book 1 I was still interested in these parts and appreciate their value to the overall story. Once you get past that first 30% things REALLY picked up and you are taken on a completely insane time travel sci-fi adventure. There is so much going on and so many timelines to follow that it does become a bit difficult to follow at times, but the thought put into the storyline and how everything weaves together was super thought provoking and I really enjoyed it. Overall, I'd probably give this a 4.5 if I could because it was still really great and I enjoyed reading it, but due to some of the lags and complexity I couldn't give it a full 5 stars. If you've read book 1 (WHICH YOU SHOULD ITS AMAZING!!) then this sequel is totally worth it to see what happens with your favorite characters. Enjoy!

The complexity of the story within this book cannot be overstated. The author successfully leads the reader through the adventures of the various characters across space and time. This is not a time travel story, but time travel plays a role. It is woven into the story so smoothly that it just seems obviously necessary but doesn't stand out as a main feature.

Loved the interplay of characters, the settings, the struggles, the shifts in time, and the technology involved. Masterful and well written.

Pointless, merely a vanity ego exercise on the part of the author. Difficult to keep the reader's attention from meandering, often skipping through handfuls of pages at a time just to get to a slightly more interesting part in the book. Save your time and energy and buy some other author's book instead.

Wow! What a follow-up to the first book in the series. Labyrinths takes off where Relics leaves off, not only through the storyline, but more importantly is its style and imaginative story telling. What appreciate about both books is I feel I am learning about new civilizations as I follow the story. As someone who loves historical stories, it feels very much like I am reading a historical account of something that won't happen for another few hundred years or more. In the best of ways, the story challenges me and works my mind. It is not a mindless read (at least for me)! As with Relics, the author intertwines the hero's journey, physics, mysticism, culture, archetypes, spirituality, and ethics into a delightful page turner, challenging some 20th and 21st century cultural norms on the way. The time travelling narrative invited me to travel back and forth as well, leading me to check myself on many hot button issues of our age and leading me to ponder if humans will ever evolve beyond a craving of power. I highly recommend this book and I eagerly await its follow up!

3.0 out of 5 stars The author got rather lost

This is the second book in the series. The first was quite a clear, coherent story, and held the attention well. This second book became a lot more complicated, and didn't manage to make the plot very clear. I felt that the author introduced too many ideas - some of them quite good ones - but failed to blend them all into a coherent story. It ended on a bit of an anticlimax, with quite a few of the story lines unresolved - unless he is planning to write book three.

Another excellent episode, although not quite as good as the first. This story contains a lot of retrospectives which both inform and detract from the main story. It sttiil a great read though.
