Anima Mea Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Bureaucracy and red tape are not just inconvenient for the living; Maxine is finding them pretty much the norm in the afterlife too...

Struck down by a tragic accident, Maxine finds herself stuck in the afterlife, soon to discover it's not all harps and clouds and celestial choir practice. It is rife with petty bureaucracy, and even the simplest thing can be jolly hard work. Once over her initial shock, she soon settles into her new home in the township she comes to know as Evermore, making friends and training for a new job, and loses no time in using and abusing the privilege of her position to visit, watch over and take care of her family, especially her beloved husband, Robert, now forced to muddle through his life as best he can without her.

I have read a lot of books and seen a lot of movies about the after life, but in Anima Mea, the author puts a whole new spin on things. And it's a believable premise, that if life did go on for us, we would have to do something, a job or purpose of some sort. This is what Maxine faces. And she knows the exact job she wants. An escort job that will allow her to visit the living so she can keep an eye on her husband Robert. Because, although she accepts her death, she can never deny her devotion or her undying love for her soul mate.

I love that this story is told from two perspectives. The Robert chapters were my favourite. I really felt his pain and anguish over losing the woman he loved. The scenes after her death tugged on the heart strings, as the reader you experienced his loss, right from those final moments when the machine is switched off, to the funeral, to facing the inevitability of living without the one you expected to spend your life with. I loved that he talked to her photograph, and wanted to keep her scent in the apartment they shared, and that she was never far from his thoughts.

Oh and I loved the concept of Evermore. I love the analogy of it being a never ending plane of bubbled worlds set to accommodate every culture and time in history. To recreate a believable place for each generation that passes. And to have an everlasting roll of toilet paper, and drinking to excess and not suffering the next day. That does seem like heaven!! LOL
I highly recommend this read, for its creativity and its sensitivity, deftly dealt with. Excellent stuff.

I have read this author’s work before and loved it, and could not wait to start this read. I was not disappointed.

Death separates soul mates Maxine and Robert, but all is not what it seems. As Robert copes with the loss of his wife, Maxine copes with the afterlife, which she calls Evermore. This is such a treat! The afterlife is not quite what we expect!

Anima Mea is imaginative, with characters that belong in the tale and everyone is believable. It is emotional, and exceptionally well written. I read mostly at bedtime and found myself wide-eyed awake into the early hours two nights in a row … because I loved every moment spent with this book. Prepare yourself – Maxine isn’t a wallflower and she demands to see her husband again, even if it means she must defy the powers that be of Evermore. She learns every trick there is to enable her to return to reality …

Worth every moment! Definitely a worthy read!

At first glance the plot might seem overworked and unoriginal but the writing salvages the book which is very different from most such stories. The MC is nicely portrayed and the effects of the husband's loss nicely described in good quality narrative prose. I like this book because despite the way it starts (it's been done before), the story unfolds fluently and the characters shine. It's a very pleasant read in fact.
Recommended as a diversion at any time.
