Another Summer, by Sue Lilly is a wonderful romance novel to get lost in. Its very close to real peoples lives and that makes all the more interesting in my opinion. Sue has a way of writing that makes the reader fell like they are experiencing the event first hand, her character’s are vivid images magically real and you are like putty in her hands as she shapes their destiny or ends their purpose. This is the first novel I read of hers and I look forward to reading more of her work. Sue is a great story teller and I appreciate her ability to write a romance novel without the vulgarity and descriptiveness some author’s chose that is best left to the readers own imagination. Thanks Sue I really enjoyed it, and I’m ably to recommend it to reders of all ages. Good clean reading.

The core of this book is a romance between the two main characters, Evie and Joe – love, sex, pregnancy, marriage, desertion, and an attempt at reconciliation. Their story includes other segments and relationships (see below).
Evie (16) and Joe (19) now: they fall in love; the sex is great; she gets pregnant; after some nonchalance at the pregnancy, Joe virtually talks himself into a marriage, and Evie promptly agrees. Evie chafes at the quality of her life with Joe; Joe disappears without a word; she goes off to her grandmother’s cottage for the Summer while her mother has the baby, Claire. Joe has had another sex life with artist Kat, she in her turn, “just ups and leaves” him. Joe sets out to find Evie to reconcile with her.
Evie/Joe (past): tells of Joe’s early life and relationship with Evie, and the first and subsequent sex encounters.
Evie/Jake now: with Joe away, Evie begins a steamy sex relationship with Jake, in marked contrast to her life with Joe. Jake is not ‘brutal’, but he is decidedly ‘brutish’ in his manner and approach.
Joe/Lisa now: Joe helps a young pregnant girl Lisa to get to her home in a trip involving distance, clothing, nakedness, solicitation – but no sex! Joe does not push it though he had opportunities. The Lisa connection comes over dubiously as to value in the book. Perhaps it was to give Joe a base to show his wife that he had changed, but Evie did not believe his deed was without sex.
Joe/ Evie/Jake now: Joe arrives at Eve’s house to finds her having sex with Jake. Joe punches Jake, and then becomes a hero by saving both Evie and Jake from a swirling river. Joe seldom, if ever, mentions his heroic deed as a major point in his reconciliation attempt. Evie has told Jake that their affair is over; Joe pleads his case, with a business proposition, and even promising to renew vows.
The author does a very good job presenting the events of the sections without losing the characters by keeping the chapters of the book at an appropriate length. Her writing is clear and straightforward. While there are emotional turns throughout, they are not startling or mind-bending.
I did not like was the tremendous amount of drinking the characters engaged in – before sex, after sex, or just because of a dry mouth. It may have been the lifestyle, but they were nearly all relatively young persons.
Evie’s character has certainly grown from the 16 year old she began as. The many associations of the word ‘always’ with Joe in the book tells a story in itself. Evie’s resolve seems to be dissipating (Claire, of course, would need a family), but frankly, I do not take Joe too seriously. (How can I?): “What?” she gasped. “How can you sit there reminiscing? After all the lies you’ve told me?” “I didn’t lie, not exactly. I just avoided telling you the truth.”

Another Summer by Sue Lilley is a decent book for all those who are into the typical cheesy romantic novels with a heartrending description of love and sex thrown in the mixture. The story, which focuses mainly on Evie and relationship with Joe, has the regular ingredients mixed in the recipe – marriage, heartbreak, emotional turmoil, and other similar scenarios. The story mainly goes through three scenes depicted intermittently with the others. The relationship of Evie with Joe, their marriage, pregnancy, breakup, and the associated emotional downturn experienced by Evie is the primary story set at the start of the book. The second story involves Joe meeting a homeless girl Lisa, with attempts to take her home and the resultant attraction between them, followed by another short relationship with an artist called Kat is the second part. The third part consists of Evie meeting Jake, a rockstar with whom Evie falls into a relationship with lot of steamy encounters. The fourth part consists of Joe meeting Evie and Jake, with the resultant circumstances. However, Evie must decide where her loyalties should lie, and who should she choose. The story does slip at places where the writer has given too much focus on Evie’s mindset as she goes through all the emotional ups and downs. The standout point however rests on how Evie is shown to grow mature from a 16 year old girl in love with Joe. If you like the typical romantic triangle-based stories with immense amount of sex, Another Summer is a perfect summer read for you.

Who hasn't been involved in a romance or long-term relationship that has soured over time or gone cold? Probably most people and I know I have. We all tell ourselves that it will never happen but then it does and the fight or flight mentality kicks in. Author Sue Lilley puts a wonderful twist on this with her "Another Summer". The story of Evie, who finds out some secrets about her husband and believes their marriage to be over. She takes off to a cottage by the sea and meets another man who makes her feel something again. Only, her husband isn't done fighting yet and this is what makes the story interesting - the choices. A lot of great dialogue here in this well-paced and emotional story. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

I read this book from start to finish in just one day. The action is fast paced, the pages turn themselves and I just couldn’t wait to find out what happens next. I like very emotional and passionate love stories and this one filled the bill perfectly. Evie is in the middle of a huge life crisis, and ends up stuck deciding between the man she believed was her soul mate, and a hot newcomer, who makes her feel things no one else ever has.

This is a very realistic story, with characters that feel quite true to life. Therefore their decisions and actions are also very true to life. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but in terms of the ending, I was rooting for the other guy. Love triangle stories are not my favorite, but this one was so fresh and so well-written it kind of changed my mind on that. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

    Highly recommended!

I loved this book. The protagonist is adorable and I immediately empathised with her. This story is tear jerking at times, but also funny, quirky and rather sexy.
Lilley writes in a liltingly lyrical style that draws you through the twists and turns of this romantic tale. The characters are well rounded, and believable. The settings are artfully detailed. I could almost smell the mustiness of the old furnishings in the cottage it became so real to me, and so much rain! As I read I became attached to the two central characters as their back stories were revealed. The plot was so engaging I read it in one sitting as I could not put it down. I was willing the story to work out, but I was kept on tenterhooks until the end.
This is not your average romance, it is well constructed, well written and most enjoyable.Chick lit at its best.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 8, 2015
I haven't read a romantic novel for quite some time but this one had some great reviews so I thought I'd give it a go. I must admit, from the outset I was hooked. This is one of those books that really grabs your attention, and you just can't stop reading. I really enjoyed the author's writing style; it's down to earth, well organised and makes for a fun, leisurely read. The book does have a few raunchy scenes, but it is far removed from being classed as 'erotic fiction' as the actual story-line is the thing that really stands out.

If you enjoy escaping into a good book; one that you simply can't put down, and like the romance genre, then I'm sure that you will love this first offering from this talented new writer.
