Another You: A haunting love story reaching back to the Second World War Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 515 ratings

A book that will stay with you long after the story ends! Perfect for fans of Diane Chamberlain, Nora Roberts, Lorna Cook and Victoria Connelly.

Sometimes the hardest person to save is yourself…

Marie Johnson fell in love with The Smugglers pub when she first moved to Dorset with her husband, Stephen.

But when Stephen’s wandering eye caused the
breakdown of their marriage, and the costs of running the pub started to mount, Marie felt her dreams crashing down around her.

With local celebrations planned for the
60th anniversary of D-Day, Marie is hopeful things will turn around.

But she could never have predicted the ways
her life will soon be changed forever.

A charming American soldier walks into Marie’s life, but it becomes clear nothing is really as it seems...

Why is Marie suddenly plagued by headaches? Is her American soldier everything he seems to be?

Or could the D-Day re-enactments be stirring up something from the past…?

Thank you for taking the time to visit my author page. If you are a reader of contemporary women's fiction who likes their romance with a big twist of mystery and suspense then you've come to the right place.

If you have taken the time and trouble to post a review of one of my books, then thank you so much. Feedback from readers (good or bad) means a great deal.

My first dual timeline romantic mystery was published by Sapere Books last summer and another will follow in 2023. The Forgotten Maid is the first Cornish Echoes Timeshift Mystery and tells the story of two lonely women who arrive in Cornwall two centuries apart, one in the Poldark era and one in the present day. Expect tin mines, smugglers, gracious houses and close coastal communities.

I have also written two haunting contemporary romances looking back to World War Two for Sapere Books. Endless Skies is about archaeologist Rachel has a habit of forming disastrous relationships, but as she starts digging the site of a tragic World War Two accident and befriends octogenarian Esther, could a love story from the past hold lessons for her too?

"It's not easygoing, but it is lovely and almost impossible to put down. And when you get that empty feeling after the book ends, because you don't want it to end, you know it's a good book." Natalie Normann

"Historical, romantic, realistic and engaging, Endless Skies provides fabulous entertainment." Linda's Book Bag

Another You tells the story of Marie Johnson, who feels her dreams have been shattered, but commemorations surrounding the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day become the catalyst for change she never could have imagined.

"Cable's writing is fresh and vivid. An evocative and thought-provoking story." Rosanna Ley

"The past and present intertwine with a war story set in beautiful Studland Bay." Angela Petch

My first novel, The Cheesemaker's House, was published by Matador in September 2013 and tells the story of Alice, who moves to Yorkshire following the breakdown of her marriage and meets her new neighbours from the present and the past. It was a finalist in the Alan Titchmarsh Show's People's Novelist competition and won Words for the Wounded's independent book of the year award in 2015.

"I really loved the authorial voice - it really drew me in. But more than that I loved the fact that the initial mystery posed is one that I could not think of a possible solution for, so that really got me hooked." Sophie Hannah

"The gift here is to make you want to read on." Jeffery Archer

I very much enjoyed this complex story with its deftly woven mix of drama, history, romance and family troubles. The Dorset setting is beautifully written and made me want to visit the area. Marie and her almost-ex husband still run their pub together, a toxic situation that only worsens as the story develops. The local reenactment of a D-Day event sets off a series of events as Marie meets an American GI, Corbin who is curiously old-fashioned and then starts a casual relationship with Paxton, another American soldier based at a nearby establishment. As Paxton’s darker side emerges his connection with Corbin is slowly revealed. The threads of the story weave together and Marie must make difficult life-altering choices.

Another You is a gentle story about a Marie Johnson who lives in Dorset with her son. She shares the running of a local pub with her estranged husband which in itself sometimes causes a few issues as there is no love lost between them. The local area is setting up to commemorate the D Day landing training that took place there and this brings several new people into her life that help her re-assess what exactly she wants to do.
Corbin is one of the two Americans that enter Marie’s life. He seems a sweet guy who generally tends to appear when she is walking alone on the cliffs and you don’t actually get to learn much about him. Then there is Paxton. He is stationed at the local base and takes a real shine to Marie. He is however haunted by things from his past and is suffering from PTSD that can lead to violent outbursts in his sleep. He also bears a striking resemblance to Corbin which throws her somewhat
Whilst working in the pub she also meets George, an army veteran and his son Mark. Through George she learns more about the past of the area but more importantly gets closer to Mark who helps her get to grips with her financial future and puts into perspective just how devious her husband has been regarding the business.
There are times in the book that you feel that Marie is happier to just get on with life the way it is, not wanting to upset anyone even though she is clearly unhappy with how things have turned out. Her son Jude means everything to her but she is determined to make sure that he goes out and lives life doing what he wants to do, not what he thinks he should do…even if it means that they fall out when she unintentionally interferes in his love life. Through her eyes you see how a bad relationship can affect someone to the point they doubt their self-worth and abandon the person they used to be.
This is the first book I have read by this author but I found that she has a way of bringing things to life that make you want to read more, so I am sure that will not be the last. I have never visited the Dorset coast but her descriptions of it brought it to life and has certainly made it an area on my “to be visited” list. Although each of the characters had their flaws, they were not so over the top that you couldn’t believe them. In fact the only character that I couldn’t take to was the estranged husband Stephen… but that was probably because he seemed to have no redeeming characteristics at all. He was also only a bit player in the story so you spent more time getting involved in the lives of the others.
I have always been a bit of a history geek so the fact that this book, although set in the current times also delved into events of the past appealed to me. The character of George and his reminiscing enabled the author to bring the two times together seamlessly.
Another You has a bit of a mystery attached to it but as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone you will have to read it for yourself to find out just what it is. Although the book started slowly and I wasn’t sure if it was going to be for me, I soon found that I was getting hooked by it and was intrigued by its characters and their stories. For me this is a definite must for those out there who love a romance novel that is more in keeping with real life, depicting real problems that people of all ages face and try to overcome whilst also dealing with their pasts.

This is a fast and good read. This book will remain with you days after you end it as you wonder how the characters are doing! This is the type of story and characterizations that make you feel that they are friends that you just had a chat with and want to know more. The simple but real language makes this a believable and good read. I wish the author told more of the back story with each of these characters, as I wanted to know more about them. What really happened with Paxton? Who is Mark? What happened with Jude? There were just too many questions that needed answers once the book ended. But it was worth the read, it was worth the time spent with this family and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

In Another You, by Jane Cable, Marie Johnson, chef and co-owner with her husband of the Smugglers pub, is almost at the end of her rope. Her husband Greg is cheating her in more ways than one; her son, a talented artist, is graduating from the University and must decide whether to remain at home and help Marie run the pub or concentrate on an art career, and she's plagued with incapacitating migraine headaches. As if this wasn't debilitating enough, her town is hosting a reenactment of D-Day that brings American GI's and WWII veterans to the area.
An attractive woman, Marie soon finds herself entangled with an American soldier and an English veteran of WWII and his divorced son with dog. Is her affair with the GI becoming more than she bargained for? Does she really want to share ownership of the pub with her estranged husband, or should she find another outlet for her skill as a cook? Finding answers to these questions makes Marie focus on putting her needs first. As she resolves her problems she finds a satisfying life waiting for her.
Jane Cable has written an enjoyable novel that carries the reader along with her. Romance, mystery, and events that arise from the characters' actions make this book easy to read and hard to put down.
Thank you Sapere Books for the review copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engrossing, beautifully written tale!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 28, 2020
One of my all-time measures of how much impact a story has had on me is how long the story lingers in my mind after I’ve read the final words, and Another You has been haunting me ever since I reached the end of this absorbing, well researched and beautifully told story.

Marie is the well-respected chef of The Smugglers pub, set back from the beach at Studland Bay in Dorset, but despite her success in the kitchen, she feels she has come up short in her handling of relationships, both with her (almost) ex-husband, Stephen, and her much-loved son, Jude.

A chance meeting with an American soldier, just as the Bay is preparing to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, seems the perfect escape from worrying about everything—if only she could get rid of her severe and debilitating migraines and the weird sense the past is coalescing with the present.

Jane Cable is a proficient storyteller. Her characters are always entirely relatable and believable, their faults as much at play as their strengths. Although not afraid to touch upon the lingering effects of PTSD and the invisible scars left by all wars, the author has combined romance, mystery, family relationships and a ghostly element, along with an excellently delivered twist towards the end.

Another You is a beautifully written story about self discovery, emerging from darkness into light and finding love where you least expect it, and I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Time-slip or ghost story?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 30, 2019
I found this novel hard to define at first. Was it a time slip novel or a ghost story? Perhaps it’s a combination of both. Marie is a partner in a successful pub cum restaurant with her estranged husband, Stephen, which makes for difficult relations. Add to the combination, college student son Jude who wants to move on with his own life but is expected by his father to continue working in the pub. The book is set at the time of the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings when a re-enactment of the area’s involvement is due to take place. During the festivities, Marie meets an American soldier but he seems to know little of the era they are living in. This is a complex love story but is all the more intriguing for that and I found it hard to put down. Well-researched and very satisfying.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most fabulous twist!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 27, 2019
I really enjoyed Another You. On the surface, it may appear to be a love story, but there is so much more depth to this. As well as romance there is mystery, a smidge of ghostliness and an examination of the horrors of war. The descriptions of the setting are breath-taking, beautifully written and made me want to rush off and explore for myself.
In searching for a way forward with her life, the heroine embarks on a journey of self-discovery that Jane Cable writes in a remarkably intuitive manner. She applies the same deft hand to dark but empathetic portrayals of PTSD and domestic abuse and seamlessly weaves it into a realistic portrayal of everyday life. The main characters are flawed and thus authentic, their complex relationships pushing the story forward. The supporting cast of characters, Jude, George, Baz and Troy are wonderful, demonstrating the power of friends and family and the joy that they bring.
This novel has a twist at the end, a twist so powerful and unpredictable that it gave an intriguing spin to the story as it closed. The twist is an ending I never saw coming and left me thinking about the clues on the way, turning it over in my mind for ages afterwards.
Jane Cable writes in a skilful fashion with an awareness of the complex emotions that we all feel, I am really looking forward to reading her next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read with a strong sense of place and history
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 21, 2017
This unusual novel defies classification. It's the personal journey of Marie, which makes it a contemporary romance, but it's also a mystery as well as a commentary on the long shadows cast by war. While I didn't much warm to Marie's character, I enjoyed the book hugely all the same. It would be hard not to, as it's vividly written with some brilliant dialogue and a strongly sense of place that perfectly captures this part of the Dorset coast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical mix of love-story and psychological thriller

I'd never read any of this author's work but I want to read more now. I hoped from the first pages that this was a story to lose myself in...and I found it hard to put down. "Another You" is a love-story with a difference and I enjoyed this accomplished work from start to finish. The past and present cleverly intertwine with a war story set in beautiful Studland Bay, which Cable paints with wonderful, fresh imagery. There are elements of fantasy too - or are there? Who is Corbin really? It's difficult to write a brief review to properly describe the rich layers in this book: of war and its destructive effect on the mind, its repercussions down the years, of the unhappiness of a marriage gone wrong and the difficulties in going forward... On a lighter note - I loved the mouth watering fish dishes cooked in the café - a shame I can't pop down there for lunch today. I recommend this book and now I'm off to order another of Cable's stories for my Kindle: "The Cheesemaker's House".
