Austin: Learning to Love #4 Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 441 ratings

Can Austin learn to love the opposite who attracts him?

Austin Russell doesn’t belong at a small school like Glynn Harber. He's meant to be a high flyer in finance not a book-keeping bursar. Now there's only one renovation project left to budget, it’s time he toughened his soft heart and got back to climbing the corporate ladder.

The truth is he’d rather climb Maisie Dymond’s father.

That urge doesn’t add up—Dom Dymond is his polar opposite—but when a near-miss brings them together, Austin discovers there’s more below his laid-back surface, especially as Dom’s determined to win the bid for the school's last rebuilding project.

Working in proximity means Austin can’t deny that they're opposites who don’t only attract, they combust whenever they’re close. Telling himself it's only a fling doesn’t ring true when Dom opens up about what keeps him in Cornwall. He’s there to heal his fractured family, and he wants Austin as part of it.

That openness makes Austin want to share too, but will Dom still feel the same attraction once he knows what drives Austin to keep climbing his ladder?

Austin is the fourth standalone novel in the Learning to Love series. Set in England's glorious county of Cornwall, each book has a fulfilling happily ever after.

Con Riley lives on the wild and rugged Devonshire coast, with her head in the clouds, and her feet in the Atlantic Ocean.

Injury curtailed her enjoyment of outdoor pursuits, so writing fiction now fills her free time. Love, loss, and redemption shape her romance stories, and her characters are flawed in ways that makes them live and breathe.

When not people watching, or wrangling her own boy band of teen sons, she spends time staring at the sea from her kitchen window. If you see her, don't disturb her—she’s probably thinking up new plots.

This storyline provides a pleasing solution for a previously only annoying character. Austin was introduced in the previous book as an ex-, and as much as that story tried to make him unlovable, the reader knew there was more. This book first highlights those unlovable attributes and then slowly recreates Austin’s character with more insight and detail, until we’re all pulling for that HEA. Lots of intense emotions again, some introspection and soul searching, and successful closure with an ending promising a HEA.

It's hard to decide whether I enjoyed reading Austin or Charles more. This one is very sweet, very tender, and did a good job of building on the previous stories. It would have been nice if the school featured a little more strongly- the idea of it was frequently present but the story took place off site. It makes sense for the story, but I did miss it.

I have enjoyed every book in this series but I have to say that I think this one is my favorite. Austin and Dom make a very unlikely pair at first glance. But they are absolutely perfect for each other. And Miss Maisie steals every scene she is in. I also dearly love Charles and have since he first appeared in any of these books. Austin had to learn to forgive himself and let go of the guilt that has crippled both him and his mother for years. All it took was a special school, a very special little girl, and her extraordinary dad.

I remember reading Charles thinking “this series can’t get any better than this.” It was just special. Charles, is so so special.

And while I didn’t love Sol as much as I did the other three books, it did bring us Austin. Who we were introduced as cold and prickly and rather unlikable. His character changed as we saw him in Luke, and I really looked forward to how his book would play out. Especially because Charles took a particular liking to Austin. I trust Charles.

This book is just impossibly sweet and Dom’s devotion to Austin from the beginning… it just gave me everything. THIS is relationship storytelling. THIS is how mature characters work through their trauma to find their HEA on the other side. And this is why I adore this series so so much. These characters are so layered. So rich. But there is no over the top unnecessary drama to make it exciting… it’s just… REALLY REALLY GOOD. I know a series is good when I just want to live in it.

My only niggle, and I’ve said this before in this series, is that the single POV kind of takes a bit away. I KNOW that’s what this series is… it’s single POV and I need to get over it, but I desperately wanted Dom’s POV as well.

But, that doesn’t take away my love and stars for this series. I can’t wait for Heppel-y Ever After… I almost wish we got novellas for all of our guys. I just don’t want it to end.

Thank you, Con, for this series. I adore it so.

Guilt is such an insidious emotion. Once you out it behind you you can start to love yourself and those around you. That's when you really begin to live!

A tragedy drives Austin and his mother. When he prevents another, he and Com are able to open their eyes, and hearts, and see what's right in front of them.

Maisie and Cameron, along with all of the guys at Glynn Harber make this book a wonderful addition that is best read in order. I'm going to hate to say goodbye to them and these emotional stories.

Austin was kind of a jerk in Luke's book, but he redeemed himself and here in his story we find out why he is so driven. Dom is a great guy and has all the patience for Austin. Austin means to leave the school and Dom as soon as he can find a high paying job back in the rat race he was used to in the city. It s just that Austin fits in so well and has made such good friends and a happy life there it's hard to see why he would leave.

Dom and Austin are good for each other. Austin loves Doms daughter. I can see them being happy together. It's a really good story with likable characters. I enjoyed seeing Austin grow and open up to others, including Cameron.

Yes, this is a romance novel, but like most all the books in Con Riley's wonderful series, it's also about healing. Her characters are all wounded in some way---as most of us are---and in finding love also find their way to healing. I can't recommend these books enough, and you'll find her characters living with you long after you've read the last page. Really quite remarkable!

How can this be anything other than 5 stars??

You know how this story made me feel? It was just like walking into a room warmed by a blazing log fire on a very cold day, a full body hug. Con's characters are just amazing, and Dom? Was absolutely fantastic, as was that little minx Maisie. My lovely Charles Heppel made several appearances, and hopefully in the final story of the series Heppel Ever After, will get the HEA that he and Hugo deserve. We caught up with several of Con's other characters in this story, and it would be so wonderful if most of them could make it to the impending nuptuals...oh, and thanks Con for the tasty tidbit concerning Sol's nephew Cameron in your newsletter. Big sigh...

Austin is another delightful book in this fantastic series. I so enjoyed watching these two adorable men finding their way to each other and to their happy future together. The appearance of previous characters in the series added more pleasure and depth to the story. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Omg what a book!! So much love of every kind flowed throughout this story that it was hard to put down, Austin finally realising that climbing certain ladders aren't important and guilt is something to let go of and learning to let love fill it's place was brilliantly done and filled with hope, out of all the books in this series this has been my favourite, loved Dom's character and how he described his daughter's disability hit very close to home hearing those exact words myself made me love him harder, him and Austin a definite match made in heaven. Loved loved loved this book loved the series a must have must read

I got sick of waiting for an audiobook & just read this one, maybe my favourite Con Riley yet, but they're all good... and how do I choose which one to read next with strong links to several others within this book.

Ah, Austin & Dom were just perfection for one another and meeting at the perfect time too, both with work to be done yet lessons & growth to support one another with, all held together with glue, crayons, paint, Heppell clangers and glitter... just magic... and sexual chemistry for forever and a day, and in any spare moment or place they could manage to find.

Oodles of community connections to the wider Cornwell crews throughout too, everyone gets at least a mention if not a supporting role

    *contented sigh*

Fans of this series will absolutely love Austin. This author has such a unique and incredible way with words that feel so different from most MM romance books on the market. This story evoked so much emotion in me and I just adored Austin, Dom and Maisie. Five stars
