Awakening Arte (The Eldest Throne Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 682 ratings

A dream made of sacred light. A path obscured by ravenous shadows. What lies beyond waits not to be found, but chosen.

Roun was born clanless, depriving him of a future in an empire where bloodlines and reputation mean everything. His only hope for escaping the life of an outcast lies in being awakened by the Eldest Throne and becoming a guardian of humanity.

But when his dream finally comes true, Roun finds himself stranded on the path to immortality with only a fragment of the spiritual powers he should have received. Roun, however, is used to making do with less—and will let neither rigorous training nor grotesque chimeras stand in the way of his ascension.

To find his own path, he will need to search for the answers hidden within. What he uncovers will forge him into a hero unlike any other—if it doesn't leave him an abomination first.

This is a progression fantasy series inspired by cultivation/xianxia/wuxia novels, though it has far more western tropes blended in than some of the other novels in the subgenre.

A new and creative system, with absolutely amazing characters. The MC and his coterie are each fully developed characters that drive the narrative and invest the reader into them as individuals and as a team. The classic lone wolf, aloof, and sometimes comedic mentor keeps the narrative light. As an anime fan, those are my favorite characters and the author blends everything together masterfully. Some typos, but nothing that takes you out of the moment. Enjoy the story…do not be the Grammar Police. I hate those reviews.

Let me start with the simple fact this book came across my kindle suggestions at random and I am SOOOOO glad it did. So let's get down to what's good and what's amazing about said book with as little spoilers as possible.
1.Very unique world space (The setting is within a part of the overall kingdom called a demenss.)
2.There is magic, but not in the way you think, but a special power called elan which is really fleshed out in the story.(Most stories from the get go tell you the max limits of their books unique "magic" but don't expect that here. You learn the ups a d downs of it as the main character does.)

The quality of this book is above average in many ways, storyline, magic, characters, etc. Though sadly I can't say it'd be one of my favorite books, I just couldn't get into the story. I also had some minor problems with how the main character was treated, he has super scary powers that - because of this worlds culture - should scare the he'll out of everyone. But the people close to him say its just fine and that people shouldn't be defined by their Arte. Except I feel like Artes are super defining in many ways and even if he shouldn't be defined by it, his powers our untested and devouring the souls of literal monsters would likely have some side effects, as hinted at in the book.
So far I've mostly said bad things about the book, but those are just my personal issues and I'd still recommend it.

P.S. Props to the artist, the cover got me super interested in the book

I won’t lie when I’m just perusing Kindle Unlimited my first filter is the book cover and the second is the synopsis. Awakening Arte delivered on both ends with a provoking image of a Bleach Hollow looking warrior and a solid setup to a progression story. The gothic lore and setting on top of Cradle-esque combat is pretty tight.

Often progression fantasy suffers with either abandoning story/ character development for over explanation of its magic system (which can easily get pretty technical and generic) however, Awakening Arte gently settles the reader in the world a la Cradle’s Unsouled. And when combat kicks up it truly delivers. Roun is surrounded by a primary cast with abilities arguably as interesting as his or at least as fun to read.

Overall I love the setting and system and can’t wait to see what Roun and his buddies get into.

This is an interesting premise and the nature of the world is VERY much in the way of Dark Souls or Bloodborne. Dark and mystical with little grounding in what would be considered a “normal” world. It’s not very well fleshed out though. There’s a shallowness to the world that extends to the characters. Here I think it was a rookie mistake to have 6 people in the party. Not an inherent issue, but it demands more skill from the author to flesh that many characters out so they don’t feel like cardboard cutouts. The author fails miserably here. Some of the characters have perhaps 4 lines of dialogue in the whole book, despite being core members of the coterie. It would have been better if there had been half as many characters. The action is pretty average as well, not being very smooth.

Overall, a decent read and I might pick up book 2 but excitement for it is not very high.

A slow starting novel that builds, and comes to an exciting finish. Roun awakens as a Grimoire, a protector of humanity, though there are some who think he should be ‘removed’. Through training and trials he earns the respect of others.
