The Awakening Heart (Dorothy Mack Regency Romances) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 842 ratings

An entertaining Regency romp! Perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

Can Dinah pursue her passions while learning to fit into respectable society?

Regency England

Having been brought up in the countryside with little company, young Dinah Elcott has no experience in respectable society and spends her days painting.

At her father’s insistence, she agrees to spend a season in London. However, Dinah has no interest in marriage and longs to become a professional artist.

Despite her reserved manner, Dinah finds an unlikely ally in the witty
Charles Talbot, who agrees to help her pursue her dreams while easing herself into society. With their shared interests and penchant for honesty, the two soon form a comfortable friendship.

Both cynical and unromantic, each believes that they are incapable of forming a lasting attachment. But as the season wears on, the sceptical pair begin to wonder whether they are mistaken…

The Awakening Heart by Dorothy Mack is a classic Regency romance with an intelligent and unconventional heroine.

I thought this was a good book. Lots of character development. I can tell Dorothy Mack has done actual research on the historical period. Her vocabulary is sublime! I did find that I wanted a little more interaction between the two love interests like we got at the end but it was still good. Also, totally clean! I recommend for Heyer fans!

I started this book as something to keep me company during lunch and I just couldn't put it down, and ended up finishing it past dinner. The author has a lovely light touch with her writing. Nothing that occurs seems contrived, forced, or heavy handed; it all just flows. The background supports the current action unobtrusively and the plot twists are realistic based on the unfolding of the story.

This is a Clean Urgency Romance, which I prefer as they are more difficult to write. I was very pleasantly surprised as too many of this style of books these days seem to require several chapters at least of explicit sex which does nothing to forward the plot.

I highly recommend this book. Interesting enough to hold an adults attention and yet something you could give a teenager, like Georgette Heyer, the creator of the genre, which I read when I was a teen.

    1) The steadfast heart -not great
    2) the reluctant heart - well written and developed
    3) the awakening heart - very well written and developed

So I love Dorothy Mack’s writing style. Very much like Georgette heyer. Though her endings do drop off quickly where I would prefer a little development in the ever after. But otherwise her writing is great.
The only book she wrote that I didn’t care for was the first in this series, I’m not sure what happened to her great development of plot and characters in that book as it was sadly lacking. But it was worth reading to get the sense of the characters in this series.

The Awakening Heart was the best in the series. It was well written and developed, I love how the H & h discovered their attraction and were perfect for each other, despite the original thoughts.

I have every book this author has written that can be found on kindle. I have enjoyed them all. This one proved really frustrating however because I had to keep stopping to look up words that were unnecessary. The meanings were simple and there is no need to use others that are no longer in use. Other than this I enjoyed the story. When I read a good book I really dislike it when I have to interrupt the flow of the story to look up a word. This one had a constant flow of them. I have noticed this in many news articles for some time now. I have a huge vocabulary having been told to read the dictionary and encyclopedias while growing up. I am a voracious reader so have a large vocabulary. The news sources I see this in the most are the ones who everyday people don’t have college educations don’t like because they feel like they’re being talked at not informed. This may be why. Still a great read but the author doesn’t need to use old fashion words. Sentence structure that matches the time period, fine but not long forgotten words.

Not your average romance, this Dorothy Mack novel is a fine example of her unique style. She creates real people firmly rooted in their era, who are not cardboard characters. As always, you will be sorry to reach the end knowing that you must leave her world and return to the present age, the only solution being to sink into another marvelous Dorothy Mack regency. I wish we had more of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, there seems to me to me to have no negatives. A really sweet story of personal growth and finding the true meaning of love and life. It is a rare book that has one not wanting to put the book down until the end.

I listened to parts of this book using a text reader and was again and again struck by the wonderful rhythm and word choices. In it's audible form it almost sounds like music or prose poetry. The characters and the story line are also way above average.

It took me a while to read this book, although I have read many by Dorothy Mack. However it is, in my opinion, one of her best! Different plot, different characters and had the ability to make me laugh out loud at a couple of points. Great read.

The stark indifference to society of this inept recruit launched on the town from an unloving home masks a deep sense of social inadequacy but a firm belief in her future as an artist. I was delighted by the author's verbal prowess, finely drawn leads, insightful recognition of hidden connections between such extremely dissimilar personalities. Much enjoyed!

I have now read two of Dorothy Mack’s vastly entertaining stories, both were delightful and extraordinarily well written. I love the use of the English language which added so much to the well rounded plot. The Characters are finely drawn and captivating. I would certainly enjoy reading a sequel to both of Dorothy Mack’s I have so far enjoyed. Judith S.

Another delightful historical romance by Dorothy Mack. Her descriptive writing style and interesting character development, all while advancing the plot makes this a delightful read. Makes me think of Georgette Heyer stories. Clean romance too.

I like all of Ms Macks works, and enjoy them immensely and this one was just as good. I do find they end rather fast, and that is a bit of a pain especially since the characters go through so much angst to get there, and boom, it a quick informal avowal of love and the end. Oh well, off to read the next one though ...
