Any Way You Slice It: An Upper Crust Novella - a sweet marriage of convenience romance (Upper Crust Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 473 ratings

Any Way You Slice It

Sometimes you have to bend the rules to get what you want.

Piper Adams has one month to find a husband, and get a green card, or be kicked out of the country just when her chain of food trucks selling Australian style pies is about to start making some serious money.

Aaron is an ambitious lawyer keen to make partner but his Boston law firm only promotes lawyers who are married.

A marriage of convenience could solve both their problems if they keep it strictly business but convincing everyone else that this is true love while trying to convince themselves that it isn’t is a sure recipe for trouble. All the kissing and touching sets the heat rising faster than the pies in Piper’s kitchen.

If you like romantic comedies, gondola rides and happy endings you’ll love Any Way You Slice It.

This is the first book of Ms. McDonells that I read, and I became an immediate fan. Inventive, tender, funny and full of identifiable characters, Ms. McDonells book are quick reads, but only because you don't want to put them down.

In this book, we meet Piper. She followed her boyfriend from Australia to the US only to find herself alone. Unwilling to give up on her own dreams, she stays in the US without a visa and follows her passion - which ends ups being a very smart decision. Her business, food trucks that serve Aussie Meat Pies, is becoming very successful... which is causing her a few legal problems.

Fortunately for Piper, her best friend Cherie has the answers. Cherie's cousin Aaron is on the market for a wife to solve a problem or two. Not the stuff of romance, the two meet and have a candid conversation about their reasons for marrying, and decide to move forward with getting married. An easy friendship turns into more, but not without complications.

What makes Ms. McDonells version of this story so charming are those complications. Despite the all the nuances that make Piper and Aaron a loveable couple, the problems they face may be bigger than Visas and people from the past.

In particular, what I've come to absolutely love about Ms. McDonell is that her characters are anything but predictable, but not in outlandish ways. They have gumption, tender hearts, passions and pursuits that all of us can identify with... but maybe on a level that takes us out of ordinary life and transports us to another stratosphere of life.
But those complications... they are the stuff this book is about

At its heart, this is a fairly well constructed marriage of convenience story, with likeable characters and witty dialogue. And I really appreciated that the heroine knew better than to give into the temptation to have sex, as it would ruin her ability to see things clearly.

Yes, there are some noticeable editing issues, but hardly insurmountable. I didn't care for the foul language, especially taking the Lord's Name in vain, either.

The biggest issue with the plot, though, is the hero's unrepented willingness to commit adultery (regretting Ophelia isn't recognizing that the adultery itself was wrong) .

Love is more than feelings; it's a decision. The feelings come & go thru the years, but the decision to commit, to honor, is what holds the marriage together. Without that understanding of & respect for the marriage bond, the hero isn't likely to stay faithful in those times when love takes effort.

Which makes the ending look more likely to be happily-for-now rather than the desired happily-ever-after.

*Clean romance level: passionate kisses, secular attitudes on sex outside of marriage, two married characters have sex but no graphic details are given
*Religion: God's Name is taken in vain, including as cursing, sadly
*Language: about a dozen uses of h*ll & sh*t, minor crudity

'Any Way You Slice It' is my first novel by Monique McDonell, but it certainly won't be my last. This funny and uplifting story set in New York pairs Piper, an Australian in need of a green card so that she can keep running the business she has established, with Aaron, an American lawyer in need of a wife so that he can get promotion within the law firm he works for. Throw in a friend with a warm and fiery Italian family and some combustible (if occasionally unwanted) chemistry and you have a story that works its way from 'I must' to 'I do'. And there is more than just delicious pie on offer to keep you drooling. There are seven more books in the series. Yes, seven! I do love a good rom-com series.

Piper needed to get married to stay in America and Aaron needed a wife in order to make partner in the law firm. They agreed to have a marriage of convenience, strictly platonic. He did not believe in love, however, she did believe. A delightful sweet story proving opposites do attract. This the first book I have read of Monique McDonell's and she did an excellent job of telling a great story. I would like to read more of her books. I recommend.

This was such a cute story. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Piper is from Australia. She came to America on a visa, but her time is running out. She runs a very successful food truck business and is close to selling it for a huge profit. She needs to get married so she has time to close the deal. Her good friend Cherie has a cousin Aaron, who needs a wife to get a promotion. So, you can see where this is going. It is a sweet story and I know you will love it. I sure did.

This book had been sitting in my library for a while. Today was the perfect day to read it.

This is a short story. It took me a couple hours to read. I like to read about people with high morals, so the fact that the love interest was sleeping with a married person kinda shot the whole thing in the foot for me. It was redeemed by the fact that I really felt like these two fell in love and maybe they can last. It would be nice to think. I also think it would take a lot more time for two people as broken as these two to believe in each other, maybe that comes later.
Sex: Lost of reference to it. Lots of flirting. Sex with no detail.
    Drugs: Lots of alcohol.
Language: A couple of swear words Sh.... and some religious words used as swear words.

I really enjoyed this quick short story and recommend it to others who want a fun, easy read. Aaron is hot; Piper is strong and independent. It's fun to watch their love unfold for each other. Part of me wanted more you know dragging out the details. But that's not what a short story is for so I was very delighted it summed it up without filling like cliffhanger. HEA with no complaints definetly going for more from this series and the Author.

Piper and Aaron brought together by her friend to stop her getting deported from the US to Australia. A fabulous romance that neither of the characters believed in love, but hey the exasperated Piper suddenly realised what a cracker of a fake husband Aaron might be. I am voluntarily putting my honest review on after accepting an ARC copy. Please Monique make the next one in the series a bit longer. I just didn't want this fabulous book to end.

This was so much fun to read and I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet with a lovely romance!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 20, 2017
Even though this book is a novella I found that I connected with the characters pretty easily. With me getting to know them quite well in the short space of time. It was nice to see a strong independent character like Piper who was trying to run a successful business. There was lovely chemistry between Piper and Aaron especially as they got to know each other better. Will they be destined to stay friends or will their marriage of convenience become real?

The story moved along at a good pace and I easily finished it in one evening. I almost wished the story could have been slightly longer, it could easily have been a full length story. Although I do hope that we get to catch up with Aaron and Piper later on in the series.

Light hearted and very sweet at times I am now looking forward to reading more in this series. If you are looking for a short story to read in an evening Any Way You Slice It would be perfect.

    Sweet with a lovely romance!
