Hart of His: A Wounded Hero Adult Romance (Cale & Mickey Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 172 ratings

A paraplegic love story continues

Moving in with Mickey Hart has taught me a few lessons.

523 square feet is really f*cking small. Sharing a bathroom is the worst idea ever when you’re a damn paraplegic. Never lie, no matter what. And one more thing...

I'm madly in love with this girl.

Warning: Strong language, mature content, drama, and angst included. Shirt sold separately.

This novella is an adult romance featuring a disabled character who (still) happens to be a rich and sexy alpha male with a potty mouth. Fans of Me Before You and Flowers from the Storm will appreciate this new, refreshing take on the wounded hero romance genre.

Hart of His is for anybody who enjoys:

    • adult contemporary romance

    • love stories with a twist

    • unconventional alpha males

    • damaged heroes and disabled characters

    From the Inside Flap

HART OF HIS: A WOUNDED HERO ROMANCE (CALE & MICKEY, BOOK 2)

    Excerpt containing spoilers
Gripping the countertop, I laid my head against the cool tiles and willed the damn thing to stop pounding. My head, not the counter. Given, I was currently in no condition to distinguish one from the other. Maybe they were both pounding. I couldn't actually tell the difference.

The only thing I knew for certain was that I felt like complete and utter shit. As if someone had jammed an ice pick six inches deep into the base of my skull and was prying it wide open.

    Jesus Christ...

Splitting it right down the fucking middle.

    That hurts.

I'm not even sure how I made it to the bathroom.

I'd woken up with my ears ringing and a jolt of blinding pain shooting straight up my spine. And the very first thought that had come to mind? The only thing I'd been even remotely concerned about?

    Not waking
    her.

Which was no easy feat when I couldn't stop myself from shaking. And by the time I'd finally managed to transfer into my chair, I was already starting to see spots. I can vaguely recall navigating down the short hallway.

    It's so damn hazy.

I can't even tell you how long I've been sitting here for. Mere seconds? Minutes? A whole hour? Yeah, I haven't a fucking clue.

And now I have to take a piss.

No, I can't physically "feel" it. I can't feel a single goddamn thing down there. But I do experience this distinct tingling sensation right below my navel whenever my bladder gets full.

    Sexy, right?

In any case, I was fully aware that I'd have to relieve myself at some point.
Soon. Fumbling a bit with the zippered pouch hanging behind my knees, I was able to retrieve what I needed.

Of course, I might have a slight issue.

My hands were trembling so badly I didn't actually trust them to insert a catheter into my dick at the moment without causing some serious damage.

Not that I had another choice.

    Fuck.

Palming the sink basin, I pushed toward the toilet and lifted up the seat. It took me less than ten seconds to realize that I had an even bigger issue. Forget about inserting anything anywhere. I couldn't even open the fucking package. Because my fingers weren't cooperating. They simply refused to separate the clear film from the white plastic backing.

My traitorous body was staging a coup and I was fucked.

Closing my eyes because my vision had completely blurred anyway, I swallowed the bile rising in my throat and tried to breathe. Even that was becoming difficult.

    I was completely fucked.

It couldn't possibly get any worse.

    Except it did.

Because just as I was hitting rock bottom...

    "Cale."

    The floor fell through.

I felt her touch the back of my neck.

    No.

Her hand was warm. So damn warm. Unnaturally warm.

    No. No. No.

Maybe I wasn't shaking, after all. Maybe I'd actually been shivering nonstop this entire time.

    "Let me help."

    "
No." The harsh syllable ricocheted through my head, almost making me wretch.

    "Yes."

"Get out." My words were slurred to shit. I sounded drunk off my ass.

    "I'm not leaving."

My teeth were chattering incessantly too. Yeah, I was definitely cold. "Get the f-fuck out."

"I'm not leaving no matter how many f-bombs you drop, Cale."

    "P-please."

    "Or how much you beg."

    This girl.

    "Better together, remember?"

    This damn girl.

I clenched my jaw tight, cringing as my teeth grated together like nails on a fucking chalkboard, and growled, "I don't want you to see me like this."

The feverish heat of her fingers traveled across my shoulder, down the entire length of my arm, banding around my wrist. Flipping my hand over. "I won't look."
She was placing something back in my grasp...

    Fuuuck.

    And then she was gone.

Romance with wounded heroes, disabled characters, alpha males, and angst.

Annie doesn’t like long walks on the beach, getting dolled up, or fairy-tale endings with a boringly perfect hero. She’d much rather be rock climbing, shooting guns, or ending on real love with a deliciously imperfect hero. And hugs. She likes hugs.

She also has a B.Sc. in Biology and feels kinda sorta weird referring to herself in the 3rd person. Just saying.

I couldn't wait to read what happened next with Cale and Mickey and now I'm dying for the next book in the series! The story was great, it was funny, sweet, and frustrating, in a good way like when you want to shake the characters and remind them to keep their temper in check and not be stupid stubborn! The characters were a perfect mix of the people we met in book one and yet still growing both as individuals and a couple. We also got to learn some more about Cale's life in a wheelchair which is one of the super interesting and unique sides to this series, it's also one of my favourite sides to the series because Cale is just a regular guy (okay a super stubborn guy!) who just happened to have had an accident that left him paralyzed. Just an overall amazing and unique love story!

The first book was sexy and pretty awesome. I was excited to find another wounded hero romance writer.

But I have to DNF this second one. I can't follow what's happening at all. It's a lot of dijoined scenes where I sometimes don't know whose POV it is or where we are.

And a thing that irritated me in the first book is way worse. Once or twice with the "This girl will be the death of me" type comments is cute. But by now it's just about every other page.

Read book one, skip the rest :(

Real, bold and humorous! In order to really appreciate this story, you need to have read the first book Hart Broken. This novella is about one the main characters from that book, Cale. The story is told from Cale’s point of view with a few parts switching to Mickey’s and it is a very intense read. In this story, we get the nitty gritty about Cale’s insecurities and doubts. He is at war with himself and with war there are always casualties.

Cale is a great character but was not the most emotionally stable person in the first book. Being crippled has affected his perception of himself as a man which has led to some insecurities that affect his behavior. I am thrilled that Ms. Arcane did not try to make him stable just because he found love. Most authors make their main leads stable when they find their “other half” and somehow it always makes them “complete” and they become stable practically overnight. Well not in real life and not in this story. This story is about the next day and days that follow. This is about the reality that someone loves him and he is just does not know how to accept that.

I got to tell you that I am loving Mickey’s character in this story even more. She knows what Cale needs and is there for him 100%. When it gets to be too unhealthy she takes a stand but in her own way. Which is exactly what he needs.

So, what did I want more of? Well there were things brought up that were left open. Why was Dixon Rush contacting Cale? Was the accident on purpose? How did Mickey know Cale was lying? There is much going on in this story! I am hoping that in book three Hart of Hers that we find out the answers to those questions and more. Overall, fantastic read and I want more, right now!

When I finished Hart Broken I was hungry for more of Mickey and Cale's story, and this little morsel does not disappoint.

As a novella, I think this was a well executed story, but I'm greedy and I wanted more! I would've loved for this to be a teensy bit longer with a little more development of some of the plot points: What was the big project / contract that had Cale so work-worn and distracted? Why was it so important? What is the history between Cale and Dixon Rush? And how did Dixon know anything about Mickey's past?

PS: I'm looking forward to whatever angst Dixon causes in future installments. He may be a jerk face, but he has my attention piqued.

Bravo Annie and thank you for another great read!

Rounding up from 2-1/2. This was my least favorite in the series. The story felt like cobbled together outtakes instead of a flowing narrative. Cale's POV was a somewhat off-putting too.

Annie is back at it with these two amazing characters who without a doubt are most enjoyable to read. The pace of the book is perfect, keeps you wanting more through to the end and even after you finish. I really enjoy her writing style and it strikes me right where it needs to. Mickey and Cale are real characters who tear at your heartstrings and frustrate you with their individuality, simultaneously. Creating characters who can do that is tough work and Annie can do it with ease. The first book was awesome and Hart of His is just as good if not better. I look forward to whatever else this excellent writer has to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, feisty & vivacious - great to see more from Mickey and Cale

*Note - if you are completely baffled about what's going on in this book, see note at the bottom.*

For fans of Hart Broken (#1), this book has the same energy, vivaciousness and spark. The author fits more into this novella than many fit into a full length book.

Told more from Cale's POV (unlike #1 which was mostly from Mickey's POV), Cale's stubborn, self-aware, single-minded character - matched with Mickey's equally determined side - really drives the book forward, and it adds something different to live in his head as well as Mickey's.

*If however you're totally confused, check which version of the book you're reading. There might be an update which you need to download. I was ready yesterday to write a review which basically said 'I've read this book twice and I honestly have no clue what's going on, the story doesn't make sense'. I logged on to write it and saw the note about the file update. The author is not over-playing how jumbled it is!! There are chunks repeated, key bits missed, completely random chapters from when M&C first met.

So having now realised there was an update I headed back and read it a third time** - this one the correct version, and [woo hoo] it makes much more sense and is the fun & feisty book I was expecting.

** Luckily, I was reading this concurrently with a mammoth anthology of Everest attempts - there are only so many accounts of horrendous storms on a mountain I can read before I need something different, so I was happy enough interspersing it with 3 read-throughs of 'Hart of His' :-) .

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this really the latest, edited version?
Reviewed in Germany on November 22, 2016

Due to a bad case of the flu I had the opportunity to read yesterday's unedited version as well (completely), and I must say that I had expected more of a change from the newly edited version. There are a few more chunks of text important for the flow of the storyline and the sketching of the characters, while others (unused paragraphs of the first book it seems) were discarded, but the timeline of events is still rather messed up: e.g. The first part 'things...' really belongs before the 7th chapter. One can only guess what happened to Cale that night that made him chase Mickey away.
What about that house Cale is building, that seems to be rather a big issue with Mickey, but we only learn about it on the last pages.
Why did Cale get injured? What kind of a threat is 'jerkface'?
Last: perhaps that's because I'm not an English native speaker, but I don't get the meaning of those references to Marco Polo.
