- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2024Wow, what a book!
Nancy Jardine’s 1st century Celtic northern Britain/Scotland really comes to life within the pages of ‘Before Beltane,’ which tracks the separate movements of her protagonists, Lorcan and Nara, prior to their meeting in ‘The Beltane Choice.’
The characters were fully realized at each tribal holding and the nemeton of the priestesses, creating a rich world where religion, spirituality, politics, and tribal culture meld seamlessly. The looming threat of a Roman invasion, coupled with inter- and intra-tribal conflicts, set the stage for a dramatic climax and ensuing series. The chapters read so easily, and I enjoyed the switch of perspectives/narratives with each chapter.
The maps were useful visual references, and I especially appreciated the phonetic pronunciations of character names! It only added to my understanding of the world Lorcan and Nara inhabit.
‘Before Beltane’ is a richly detailed and captivating prequel to Jardine’s Celtic Fervour series. I can’t wait to read what happens to the characters next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and well-researched prequel
I thoroughly enjoyed this prequel to the Celtic Fervour series. We are introduced to Nara and Lorcan, thus providing us with insights into their characters and laying the foundation for the first book in the series. Nancy Jardine’s books are well researched, and this was no exception. The descriptions of life in Brigantia as the Roman invasion gathers pace are authentic and detailed, but this in no way detracts from the well-judged pacing. Lorcan and Nara’s stories are atmospheric and pervaded by a strong sense of destiny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Northern Britannia AD 71 is Fraught with Tension
Princess Nara of Selgovae, an acolyte to the Goddess, finds herself back home with her unforgiving father.
Lorcan of Garrigill travels as an envoy for King Venutius. It is a dangerous post, and the danger only increases when he meets the Druid Maran.
As the title states, this is a prequel to the Celtic Fervour series. In it, Ms Jardine gives a view of the complicated politics of England's early Roman occupation period. More than that, the two imminent protagonists of the series come to life as complex characters.
It is interesting and also exciting to become familiar with the backstory, even if you aren’t familiar with the Celtic Fervour series. This prequel comes across as an important factor in appreciating the main characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic prequel to the Celtic fervour series.
An excellent page-turner introducing Nara and Lorcan describing the lead up to Beltane in the first book in this series. Not only does this give us a wonderful insight into how their characters evolved and also provides hints as to how they will further develop in upcoming books.
This book is highly recommended for readers already familiar with this series and also new readers wanting to start with the Celtic Fervour novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before Beltane by Nancy Jardine
The Prequel to the Celtic Fervour Series by Nancy Jardine is a very enjoyable read which takes the reader back to the early years of the first century AD in Iron Age Britain before the full Roman invasion of Brigantia. The book gives an early sense of the Celtic people and has something for every reader of historical novels.
