Review

"Terror grows most freely where you least expect it. "The Enemy of My Enemy" is the follow up to Richard Bard's previously Acclaimed "Brainrush," following the life of Jake Bronson as he finds that the very enemy he fought for so long seems to be building itself up in his own hometown. Bronson begins to investigate the cell and it will take him far and wide, and he starts to doubt if he alone can stop the plots. "Brainrush 2" is a fine pick for fans of the previous and for readers of action thrillers in general, very much recommended." - Midwest Book Review

"Richard Bard continues to show his skill as a writer in this action thriller and nail-biter that I highly recommend. The action scenes are vivid and put you in the middle of the action." - The Book Review

The Enemy of My Enemy (Brainrush 2)

After finishing Brainrush a few days ago, I was dove right into The Enemy of my Enemy. Brainrush was a fast paced thrill ride but this one was even more of an adrenalin fueled tale. Jake and his friends are back in California settling into their lives again when their enemies find them and begin to unleash their payback. Jake's cancer is gone and his amazing mental abilities are stronger. Thought dead at the end of book 1, Jake's nemesis reappears with a plan to wipe out Jake and every person in America. Like a chess master, he is always 3 moves ahead of Jake, but Jake and his loyal friends never give up and kick some serious butt along the way. The action is non-stop - - gun fights, car chases, Mexican cartels, and LA street gangs make up only some of the events and players in this ride. It is a real page turner and reads like a blockbuster Hollywood action movie.

My one hang up with Brainrush was the sci-fi twist at the end of the book. The alien obelisk and the fate of mankind hanging in the balance was not something I saw coming, nor was it something I thought the story really needed. In this book, that story line is more developed and starts to become a bigger thread. I am still not 100% sold on this part of the story and still think that the books would have stood up fine without it. I am going to move onto book 3 and see where it all ends up.

I have only one bone to pick with this series so far. It seems that for writers, of this genre is to keep the protagonist at points of constant potential failure in their battle against whatever enemy they are facing. While , I think that can be an important element in this type of adventure, I personally felt that it was a little overdone in this second book. However I do recommend this is an exciting and worthwhile read.

Did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Loved the excitement, adventure, intrigue and the Interrelationships of the characters. Will definitely go on to Book 3

Richard Bard, oh, man, you have outdone yourself in, "The Enemy of My Enemy"! I was impressed with the first book in your Brainrush series, yet a little skeptical towards the end on how you were going to pull all the elements together. I am BLOWN AWAY with the second book in the series! Book 2 is written so it can stand independently, but I would advise all readers to start with Book 1 and just buy the next two while you're at it! I ate up Book 1, and devoured Book 2, each in 24 hours. The action is absolutely riveting and unrelenting in keeping you glued to this story. The characters, introduced in Book 1, are further developed and explored so you KNOW them and you are invested in their hearts and minds, as they are in the fight of their lives, and the live of Americans, against an evil villain second to none! The writer demonstrates an excellent knowledge of aeronautics, weaponry, modern biological weapons, the attempt to control the minds of others via external means, and psychology that any veteran, like myself, can thoroughly appreciate. In reading Richard Bard's bio., you will know why he excels in the aforementioned, as well as his knowledge and compassion for those stricken with the "unjust" maladies that permeate our society today. However, we are not moved to love those characters in his book afflicted with such illnesses merely for sympathy's sake, but just the opposite, we marvel at their strengths and courage well beyond their age and so-called limitations.I am purposely not mentioning anything specific from the book because I would not spoil your adventure for anything! I would give this book 10 stars if I could! Unforgettable story, I loved every page! You just have to read this series - I'm on to Book 3!!!!!

I imagine being an independent writer is akin to being a professional athlete; your biggest fans are those who might've "played your game" but did not have the dedication to make a go of it on a higher level. As such, they will certainly cheer when you turn in a flawless performance, but will jeer you over any misstep you make.

I am sure there will be a lot of reviewers who play the role of bleacher bum after reading Brainrush II. They will beat their chests and tell you how some of the speeches given by key characters are bombastic and melodramatic; they will boo and hiss the fact that the novel stretches the believability factor in several key moments; and they will do the wave any time they find a military/tech gadget/scientific/etc. inaccuracy that you never noticed but that totally took them out of the book. If pressed, I could easily play that role because those comments are true to some extent.

But to focus on them would be to ignore the fact that Mr. Bard once again has produced a highly enjoyable, wholly entertaining, thriller that moves at breakneck speeds.

Brainrush II picks up several months after the events of the first novel. Jake Bronson still has the super brain he picked up during an MRI accident. It is still capable of speed reading, super speed, mathematical genius, telekinesis, limited telepathy, and total genius. He is settled down to a normal life with the love of his wife Francesca and their adopted daughter Sarafina. Of course, for Jake and his friends, a normal life is being on guard at all times against the brain implanted jihaadists while waiting for the doomsday event that Jake accidentally triggered the first go around.

I know it sounds like a mess, but somehow fledgling writer Richard Bard pulls it off. He does this by (re-)introducing us to the very likable (though clichéd) cast of characters. He imbues them with personality, smarts, and humor, and then spends the rest of the novel putting them in scene after scene after scene of high octane peril that forces us to root for them. All the while he has several larger specters hovering in the wings...it's not enough that they must save themselves and their families, this cast is tasked with saving the entire world.

It is like a serial adventure, an Indiana Jones film, where each time you catch your breath another twist is presented, our heroes are endangered and you force yourself to read just a little bit further to find out what happens next. And while I admit this is not the highest form of literature, it is certainly a ride that is worth its admission and then some.

Where Mr. Bard stumbles is in handling that delicate balance of recapping the action of the first book while moving forward the action of this, his second. Some descriptions (the sports bar comes to mind) seem almost like straight copy/pastes from the first book; others are mentioned sooooooo many times that you will groan over them (the grenade in Batista's lap says hi!);still others just seem...awkward. After all, the title is Brainrush II, everyone should know to read BR1 and if they didn't describing it over and over isn't going to get them there. Also, some typos and missing words crop up from time to time.

But still, a stumble here and there is fine from a player who ultimately sprints to the end zone to score. And while I enjoyed it slightly less than B1, I look forward to the conclusion come this fall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richard Bard never disappoints
Reviewed in Canada on July 27, 2020
He knows how to write. His characters are realistic and intense, even down to the younger characters. They all have their uniqueness that adds to a dynamic story. This is the second book in the series. Brainrush is the first. if you haven't read it, don't start with any of the others. Brainrush will keep you captive from beginning to end. I couldn't wait to read more, so I was thrilled to see the whole series available on Amazon. Thanks, Richard - will always look forward to your books. Just finished Book 2 Enemy of My Enemy: could not put it down. Took it with me every time I went out, plus while at meal time, even while watching tv. Fast pace, riveting details. Jake reminds me, in a humourous way, of John McLean in Die Hard series - indestructible - gets knocked down but keeps getting up! Really looking forward to Book 3.

3.0 out of 5 stars It not keeping up with #1

Well, the first book was very interesting, interesting enough for me to buy the sequel. However, the story does miss something and I'm not really able to put a finger on it. Maybe I did expect more as the basic idea does offer a lot of fantastic opportunities. But the main charater with a ll his powerful abilities seems just a bit to slowwitted to use them for his benefit. Too bad... this could be a best seller...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another white-knuckle ride from the master of page-turning story-telling.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 11, 2012
True to his name, the Bard has done it again!

I once had the good fortune to be a passenger in a 4-man bob-sled as it hurtled down the spectacular Olympic bob-sled run at Lillehammer in Norway. It was possibly the most thrilling physical experience of my life, leaving me shaken, exhausted and yet desperate for more - though perhaps not right away. The experience of reading Brainrush 2 is not altogether dissimilar.

I loved Richard's début novel, the first of the Brainrush trilogy, but it left me wondering how on earth he could possibly follow it. Well, not only did he follow it, his already enviable skills of story-telling have now been refined and polished to such a degree that I no longer have any doubt that the name of Richard Bard will soon be a regular fixture on every best-seller list.

The strange thing is, I don't usually go for all-american-hero, action-packed, save-the-world, novels like this, preferring instead something a little more subtle, or dare I say, cerebral. And yet, to say I enjoyed this book is such a gross understatement, it's made me completely rethink what I look for in terms of literary sustenance.

When I want to luxuriate in the elegance of prose, reflect on the subtleties of human nature or expand my vocabulary, I'll continue to seek out the works of Ian McEwan, William Boyd and a hundred other past and present literary giants. When I want humour, there is a similar stable of greats. But when I want to switch off and escape for a few hours of pure adrenaline, I will from now on, turn to Richard Bard.

The only problem I see with this resolution, is that he hasn't yet written enough to satisfy my addiction!

Come on Richard, Hurry up and write some more for us!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Man's humanity to man" at the worst of times
Reviewed in Australia on August 20, 2015
This was the fourth of Richard Bard's books that I have read. I was very much enthralled by the first three. However, I must state that 'The Enemy of My Enemy' has become my favourite of this wonderful up-and-coming author who has quickly become my favourite author. I particularly liked the development of the characters in this book. You were able to feel great empathy for the principal characters and felt like you really got to know them and their motivations.
Another aspect I really liked was the way in which Richard demonstrated "man's humanity for mankind" within a series that that was based predominantly on "man's inhumanity". Characters who would have ordinarily been opposed to one another joined forces to fight for the greater good. Even the principal 'villain' was shown to have some goodness deep inside.
I have no hesitation in recommending this book (and, in fact, all of Richard's books) to anyone who enjoys excitement-laden books and quality writing.
