The Enemy of My Enemy (Brainrush Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
Bestselling author Richard Bard returns with his highly-rated Brainrush thriller series, pitting hero Jake Bronson against his jihadist nemesis--and a new bioweapon that threatens the soul of every mother in America.
When a freak accident gave Jake Bronson enhanced cognitive abilities and landed his loved ones in the crosshairs of an Islamic terrorist, the only way out was with guns blazing. But Jake was unable to put a stop to his nightmares or his murderous nemesis, Luciano Battista, in that ferocious Afghan mountains showdown. Now the terror czar and his minions have brought the fight to American soil--along with the most terrifying bioweapon that has ever threatened the free world. They demand vengeance, and Jake's family and friends are caught in the crossfire.
From California's beaches and Mexico's deserts to the depths of a raging underground river and the treacherous Venezuelan jungle, Jake and his unlikely alliance of friends wage a rolling war of wits and indomitable will--to rescue those they love, to save America from extinction, and to stop a madman's bid for global conquest dead in its tracks.
An international thriller with soul. Ideal reading for fans of Michael Crichton, Clive Cussler, James Rollins, Nora Roberts, Marcus Sakey, Michael Grumley, J.D. Robb, Brad Thor, Dan Brown, Matthew Reilly, Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, and Vince Flynn.

About the author
Richard Bard draws on his own experiences as a former USAF pilot and cancer survivor to craft compelling characters who risk it all for love and loyalty. Born in Munich, Germany, to American parents, he joined the United States Air Force like his father. But he left the service when he was diagnosed with cancer and learned he had only months to live. He earned a management degree from the University of Notre Dame and ran three successful companies involving advanced security products used by US embassies and governments worldwide. Now a full-time writer, he lives in Redondo Beach, California, with his wife and remains in excellent health.

My one hang up with Brainrush was the sci-fi twist at the end of the book. The alien obelisk and the fate of mankind hanging in the balance was not something I saw coming, nor was it something I thought the story really needed. In this book, that story line is more developed and starts to become a bigger thread. I am still not 100% sold on this part of the story and still think that the books would have stood up fine without it. I am going to move onto book 3 and see where it all ends up.
I am sure there will be a lot of reviewers who play the role of bleacher bum after reading Brainrush II. They will beat their chests and tell you how some of the speeches given by key characters are bombastic and melodramatic; they will boo and hiss the fact that the novel stretches the believability factor in several key moments; and they will do the wave any time they find a military/tech gadget/scientific/etc. inaccuracy that you never noticed but that totally took them out of the book. If pressed, I could easily play that role because those comments are true to some extent.
But to focus on them would be to ignore the fact that Mr. Bard once again has produced a highly enjoyable, wholly entertaining, thriller that moves at breakneck speeds.
Brainrush II picks up several months after the events of the first novel. Jake Bronson still has the super brain he picked up during an MRI accident. It is still capable of speed reading, super speed, mathematical genius, telekinesis, limited telepathy, and total genius. He is settled down to a normal life with the love of his wife Francesca and their adopted daughter Sarafina. Of course, for Jake and his friends, a normal life is being on guard at all times against the brain implanted jihaadists while waiting for the doomsday event that Jake accidentally triggered the first go around.
I know it sounds like a mess, but somehow fledgling writer Richard Bard pulls it off. He does this by (re-)introducing us to the very likable (though clichéd) cast of characters. He imbues them with personality, smarts, and humor, and then spends the rest of the novel putting them in scene after scene after scene of high octane peril that forces us to root for them. All the while he has several larger specters hovering in the wings...it's not enough that they must save themselves and their families, this cast is tasked with saving the entire world.
It is like a serial adventure, an Indiana Jones film, where each time you catch your breath another twist is presented, our heroes are endangered and you force yourself to read just a little bit further to find out what happens next. And while I admit this is not the highest form of literature, it is certainly a ride that is worth its admission and then some.
Where Mr. Bard stumbles is in handling that delicate balance of recapping the action of the first book while moving forward the action of this, his second. Some descriptions (the sports bar comes to mind) seem almost like straight copy/pastes from the first book; others are mentioned sooooooo many times that you will groan over them (the grenade in Batista's lap says hi!);still others just seem...awkward. After all, the title is Brainrush II, everyone should know to read BR1 and if they didn't describing it over and over isn't going to get them there. Also, some typos and missing words crop up from time to time.
But still, a stumble here and there is fine from a player who ultimately sprints to the end zone to score. And while I enjoyed it slightly less than B1, I look forward to the conclusion come this fall.

I once had the good fortune to be a passenger in a 4-man bob-sled as it hurtled down the spectacular Olympic bob-sled run at Lillehammer in Norway. It was possibly the most thrilling physical experience of my life, leaving me shaken, exhausted and yet desperate for more - though perhaps not right away. The experience of reading Brainrush 2 is not altogether dissimilar.
I loved Richard's début novel, the first of the Brainrush trilogy, but it left me wondering how on earth he could possibly follow it. Well, not only did he follow it, his already enviable skills of story-telling have now been refined and polished to such a degree that I no longer have any doubt that the name of Richard Bard will soon be a regular fixture on every best-seller list.
The strange thing is, I don't usually go for all-american-hero, action-packed, save-the-world, novels like this, preferring instead something a little more subtle, or dare I say, cerebral. And yet, to say I enjoyed this book is such a gross understatement, it's made me completely rethink what I look for in terms of literary sustenance.
When I want to luxuriate in the elegance of prose, reflect on the subtleties of human nature or expand my vocabulary, I'll continue to seek out the works of Ian McEwan, William Boyd and a hundred other past and present literary giants. When I want humour, there is a similar stable of greats. But when I want to switch off and escape for a few hours of pure adrenaline, I will from now on, turn to Richard Bard.
The only problem I see with this resolution, is that he hasn't yet written enough to satisfy my addiction!
Come on Richard, Hurry up and write some more for us!
Another aspect I really liked was the way in which Richard demonstrated "man's humanity for mankind" within a series that that was based predominantly on "man's inhumanity". Characters who would have ordinarily been opposed to one another joined forces to fight for the greater good. Even the principal 'villain' was shown to have some goodness deep inside.
I have no hesitation in recommending this book (and, in fact, all of Richard's books) to anyone who enjoys excitement-laden books and quality writing.
