Bad Blood: A gripping historical murder mystery (Julia McAllister Victorian Mysteries Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 108 ratings

Julia McAllister returns in another Victorian murder mystery! For fans of Sherlock Holmes, Anne Perry, Elizabeth Peters and Victoria Thompson.

Julia must unravel a sinister case from the past…

1895, London

When Austin Forbes is shot dead,
Julia McAllister is called upon in her unofficial role as police photographer to capture the crime scene before the evidence can be contaminated, lost or destroyed.

The dead man is a wealthy factory owner whose baby son, Thomas, was abducted eight years previously. The ransom was left untouched and the boy never seen again.

When Julia befriends the man’s distraught widow, Cara Forbes, she determines to uncover the truth behind the two family tragedies.

With
Detective Inspector Collingwood on the trail of a jewel thief, Julia’s own investigation leads her down a shadowy path of secrets and lies, betrayal and deception.

Will Julia discover what happened to Thomas Forbes? Can she unmask Austin Forbes’ murderer?

And can Julia finally put her own dark past behind her?

BAD BLOOD is the third book in the Julia McAllister Victorian Mystery series: historical romance murder mysteries with a courageous woman sleuth embarking on a traditional British, private investigation in nineteenth-century London.

Marilyn Todd is a critically acclaimed author of short stories and historical thrillers, who "paints antiquity with a particularly suspenseful brush and skillfully tangled plots" (Booklist). Her Roman series features "a gorgeous rich bitch, plotting and spying to survive adverse fortune" (Daily Mail). The Greek novels feature "an abundance of historical tidbits and robust prose" (Kirkus Reviews). All her work embraces humour, suspense and a lively sense of drama, often inspired by the places she visits.

In 2015, her short story "Blood Red Roses" won one of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine's prestigious Readers Awards.

The year before, "The Wickedest Town in the West" scooped the same award.

And another story, "Room for Improvement", about quickie divorces in 1950s Brighton, was nominated for a Shamus.

She and her husband currently live on a French hilltop surrounded by vineyards and woods, and when she isn't killing people, Marilyn enjoys cooking. Which is pretty much the same thing.

This was the first of Marilyn Todd's series featuring Julia McAllister that I have read. I enjoyed it so much, I went and read the first two books! Julia McAllister and DI Collingwood are fascinating characters. Both have flaws and secrets in their past that threaten their future, but underneath it all are good people trying to do their best. A current murder prompts Julia to investigate a kidnapping cold case. Collingwood is warned not to interfere with the police investigation but a string of robberies gives him a welcome reason to stay on the periphery. Plenty of suspects with strong motives and secrets to hide keeps Julia from seeing the real evil until it almost too late. I look forward to the next book in the series. Thank you to #NetGalley for the opportunity to read #BadBlood.

This was a well written historical mystery and the characters are engaging and Julia is a strong, capable protagonist. But if you haven't read the other books in this series it is hard to follow and ends up somewhat convoluted. It also dragged a bit in parts which made it more of an effort to finish. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
