Badger Town: A Ghost Novel Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

How far and how fast would you go to get out of ghost town?

Peter was young, alive and obedient - the only difference now is he’s dead.

The ghost community have lost their Gatekeeper To The Afterlife and have become overcrowded and rebellious.

Full of ideas copied from nefarious schemes deployed by the living, the ghosts’ rulers think they can solve their many problems. The head of their ruthless government tasks Peter with capturing ghost children to be used as the much-needed fuel to power the high-speed, get-away train.

Which is going to prove stronger, Peter’s obedience or his conscience? Disobeying would save a few young souls, but it would derail the town’s only escape route. When the new Gatekeepers arrive, they turn out to be children. Who can he trust and who can he turn to for help?

There are always consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read - keeps you guessing

In addition to enjoying this ghost story, I loved the touches of wit and irony surrounding the HS2 project. The author's descriptions of a ghostly underworld are vivid and imaginative, enabling the reader to appreciate its horrors and eliciting sympathy for its victims, or at least some of them. Amid a mix of likeable and despicable characters, there are plenty of twists to keep you guessing on the outcome for both the living and the dead. Don't let it keep you up at night. Well written with good pace, a very enjoyable read.

This was an enjoyable novel with a twist! Well written with great characters. I have read other books by the same author and they never disappoint. I can definitely recommend it.

It's an interesting story, so believable, unpredictable, every chapter is enjoyable. The ghosts? Nothing to fear.
I quite enjoyed it from start to finish. What is there not to like about Priya and her children?
Then there's Grace sitting on a secret, a shocking one. The end answered my question about Peter and his sister.
Another great story on my bookshelf

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever and entertaining novel

This was a refreshingly unique take on a ghost story that didn’t really have me quivering in the corner with the light on as such, although there were some elements of horror which had the power to shock. The characters were very well drawn. I loved the relationship between Priya and her children.

The author has a real talent for intelligent dialogue, too, as well as weaving in a subtle exploration of themes including domestic abuse and bullying. Safe to say, not all the characters in Badger Town are likeable and Robyn Cain’s gift is in making them all very different and bringing them to life – even the dead ones. Introducing the topical high-speed railway storyline, albeit an underworld one, was a nice touch.

My only criticism would be that although the dialogue was very well written, I felt it slowed the story down at times because it could be extensive in parts. Maybe I was just seeking more action and a little less talk.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read from a talented author with a distinctive voice. I’m very much looking forward to reading more from her catalogue.
