Bait on the Hook: A rural mystery, full of suspense (Dan Mallett Investigations Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

A cosy English mystery full of suspense! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, M C Beaton, Sophie Hannah and Faith Martin.

Dan Mallett chases a faceless gunman…

1979, West Country of England

When
Dan Mallett arranges a secret meeting with the local police constable’s daughter — Julie — in the grand home of her employer, he gets more than he bargained for.

During their liaison, an intruder breaks into the house and is shot by an unknown assailant.

When the police arrive to find Dan’s bicycle outside, it seems he is moments away from being arrested for the crime. Unwilling to use Julie as an alibi, Dan goes on the run, determined to unmask the perpetrator.

Unarmed and with almost no leads, Dan must deploy his full arsenal of tricks and traps in order to survive the deadly chase…

Why was the gunman lurking in the house? Were they expecting the intruder?

And could Dan be the killer’s next target…?

5.0 out of 5 stars Outwitted by a Child but Rescued by a Dalliance Partner - and a Dog
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 15, 2020
First, think Lovejoy then add some, in a rural setting of course. Dan Mallett as a banker turned poacher cum handyman is always going to spell trouble. Now add a nine-year-old brat – female who transmogrifies into a male - with an imagination which is off the scale and a turn of phrase even more snappy and manipulative than his own and you have a harum-skarum adventure involving a three-day kidnapping, blackmail (by the child) a murder and a police chase. Oh, and the promise of a dog. That matters.
Secondly suspend your disbelief. A man who has ‘borrowed’ a stranger’s car in the 1970s is not going to worry about the police linking his fingerprints on the steering wheel in a matter of minutes in the police database. But that anachronism matters a not jot in the context of this joyous romp of a story. The period still rings true, as does our hero’s iniquitous knowledge of poaching skills. If you want to laugh aloud and don’t mind a touch of tenderness underneath the very small quantity of gore, this is the book for you.
