- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2020Baker's Coven is a standalone cozy mystery. This is a modern day, fun read. Poppy, so named because she was found in front of a bakery, wrapped in a knitted baby blanket and put in an apple crate on the day she was born. Even though she has had a very good life she is curious about her biological mother. The only clue she has is the town where she was born and the distinct pattern in the baby blanket. The Great Baking show is being filmed on the grounds of a manor house that holds clues to her mother's name. She has managed to be a contestant and she is determined to get in the house. During one of the previous seasons they did a tour in the house and a portrait in the dining room has the painting of a woman wearing a shawl with the exact pattern as her baby blanket.
Only thing, the current Earl and his wife do not allow anyone but the servants in the house. She is having a very difficult time getting in to question the long time staff. There is one other problem, there has been a murder on the grounds so everyone is super secretive. Poppy has had a near miss herself. She was almost crushed when a piece of an old silo almost hit her as she was picking berries. Her new friend, the landowner's dog, herds her to safety. It won't be the last time the dog has come to her rescue.
This story is fun, mysterious, and entertaining as Poppy goes about another adventure solving a murder that involves bees. There is a bit of minor flirting with one of the police officers. This book is written so that any age can read and enjoy. It teaches a few lessons as well as being entertaining. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The series is about a young woman desperate to find her biological mother. It is set on the TV set of the Baking Show. There are a lot of colorful characters that add to the area and the show. It is a fun read. I almost forgot, there is a fun, flirty, ghost that only Poppy can see as you see Poppy is a witch but her special gift is that she can see dead people. She has been able to do that all her life but she has never discussed it with anyone. She has just discovered she is a witch and she has a lot of sisters locally. They are a family and Poppy is learning to be one of her new family.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 3/18/2020

📚 Genre: Cozy mystery / paranormal
💕 Positives:
* The murder was fun to solve.
* I really enjoyed the ghost aspect to the storyline. It's a happy and funny ghost, so nothing spooky or scary.
* Sly was a sweetheart. 💖
🚫 Negatives:
* There were a few blatant grammatical errors (3), but not enough to deter me from reading the next one.
⚡Trigger Warning: There is a small and short incidence of animal cruelty (a man kicks a dog). It's very short lived, not descriptive at all and easy to skip over.
🌟 Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The setting was cozy, the baking competition was fun and the way Poppy discovered the murder was inventive. I'll definitely read the next one in the series.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2025The competition continues and so does Poppy’s hunt for her pass, meanwhile her powers are developing and she might just need them to solve unexpected mysteries popping up.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024I am liking the characters in this story more with each book. There is a sense of comradery as well as the competition with the bakers. The plot is easily followed, and the premise is finding out who killed the farm renter and how did he get killed by bees when he was deathly afraid of them. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to the rest of them in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2024I am enjoying the series and look forward to the next book. My copy had quite a few missing pages which was frustrating and affected the story line. Hopefully my next book will be complete.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2021This is a good light-hearted and entertaining detective story. The characters are amiable without being a bit cloying, which is an admirable achievement in writing fiction. The plot is well thought out and convincing. My only quibble is the writing. Unlike the other books from Ms. Warren that I have read, this book does not seem to have had an editorial review. For example, at places a verb is used, and then the author seems to have settled on another verb - but omitted to delete the first one. The resulting 'double verbs' is distracting and disrupts the smooth flow of the narrative for the reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020I am really enjoying the book and the others in the series. I am a fan of the Great British Baking Show and love how it's premise is included in the story. I also think this series and the others by Nancy Warren are great for younger readers. My 11 year old grand daughter picked it up while visiting me. She loved it and wants me to get her the rest of this series and other series of books by Ms. Warren.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poppy hasn’t impressed
I read everything of Nancy Warrens’. But Poppy, although a sweet girl, seems to have the intellect of an empty egg carton.
I will keep reading because of loyalty to the Author. I feel maybe Nancy was unable to add a bit of oomph to Poppy’s character. Maybe the last book will tie it all together?
As usual, the editing and proofreading is exceptional. Tiz a pity the storyline is weak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another lovely read
Like all books by Nancy Warren I’ve read this book is great fun and entertaining.
However, like all books by Nancy Warren I’ve read, the ungrammatical use of prepositions and pronouns is gratingly annoying. Nancy is a graduate of English literature and should know better than to use expressions like “ You will always be a star baker for your mother and I”: prepositions are never combined with the subject, only with the object; it’s “for your mother and me”.
Luckily her entertaining writing more than makes up for this flaw.

4.0 out of 5 stars book 2
Don’t think I’m going to be able to read through the whole series as I found myself skipping pages as the story wasn’t keeping my interest. Still a good blend of magic, ghosts, murder and intrigue but almost too much background info.
