- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first book I have read by Mr Jewett, and it most definitely will not be the last. This is a very realistic novel about the many different ships that took part in WW2. Whether it be a Carrier or PT or Tanker or Cruiser or Destroyer or Sub the reader was told how each ship helped to fight in this great conflict. By using about 4 different friends of the Troost naval family, Mr Jewett accomplished this task. This novel was also a coming of age story of those 4 friends of Warren Troost. They were inexperienced naval officers who grew up and excelled in the heat of battle. They also grew up on the home or leave front. When they were on leave they met women who loved them and wanted so much for them to come back to them safely. Mr Jewett also brought home to the reader the horrors and evils of War and the maniacal determination of the Enemy they faced. Once all of the main characters were introduced, the book really began to increase in intensity and action. It was tough to put the book down. Toward the end of the book the action became so intense that the reader actually feels as the characters themselves voice, " will this conflict ever end and will I survive" . I am on to the next book "Carrier War".

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlthough dedicated to two senior retired USN officers "...whose technical assistance made it possible for the book to be written," this book is replete with technical errors. Other reviewers have already pointed out several, unfortunately there are many more. This is unfortunate, for any historical novel, but especially so when it is set in such a well known field as the USN in the Second World War. These mistakes almost ruined the book for me, but not quite. There are several protagonists; all but one miraculously successful and lucky in all that they do, and the story moves on at a good clip. There are also quite a few affaires and bedroom scenes, all without explicit sex, and at least some of them are plausible even given the mores of the wartime 1940's. However, there is hardly any character development for the women, and in some cases their motivation and actions are simply inexplicable. Perhaps this book too short for such a complex story. As it is, the book ends with the invasion of Iwo Jima, and inexplicably, the death of President Roosevelt is announced a day after the start of the invasion.
The author's style is straight expository prose, all very clear and readable in many short chapters moving from one protagonist to another. Absent the many technical and historical errors, this could have been a compelling book instead of just good reading for the beach. A second volume has been promised for June, and if I can get to a beach by then, I may buy it in the hope that it will have been more carefully written.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe author has written a largely accurate historical setting for his story. A story brought to life by quite a number of clearly drawn characters, all of whom are from or to be in the Navy - serving on a cruiser, submarine, tanker ship, patrol boat; as a nurse and as a carrier flier. There are also detailed sketches of their family background and of their current loves (a bit too much, some other reviewers have stated, but not me…).
My only annoyance with the novel is the author giving fictitious names to historical people and ships when it is clear who and what he is writing about. There is really no reason not to have used the actual names.
However, I must say that I was engrossed in his story about the hellish fighting of the Pacific War. So, I fully recommend this well-written book to you. -J. Bannister
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlmost stopped reading the book it started to sound like a soap opera. You have to take into consideration that the military is a closed personnel network. So it isn't to hard to have everyone meet at least once during the transfers and reassignments. At any moment when a country is at war. The story's written well. Had good action scenes
along with the personal relationships.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood read interconnecting war information with personal lives of the principles of the story. The book is hard to put down.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was an enjoyable read with nicely developed characters. I am already registered to receive the sequel. I served in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer and crossed the Atlantic Ocean more times than I can recall. Battle Stations has some technical flaws, but I was so engrossed in the storyline that they were not bothersome. I look forward to reading Roger Jewett future books.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2022Format: Mass Market PaperbackVerified PurchaseI was surprised that the author used Wouk's format of NOT using ship-types and names as a matrix for his story. Many, many adventure novels use real cities, towns and events as backgrounds successfully. This author seems to forget the naval ships' naming code: BB's have states' names, cruisers, cities, carriers historic names or stinging insects(!) and DD's individual war-heroes. Also, he gets Wildcat airplanes' gun complements wrong, as he does time, rate and distance descriptions. The personal stories are fine, but, once again, given the lapse of time, it would be perfectly fine to put people aboard real ships in real localities and battles. Look at the number of books that place fictional characters in real settings. Look also at books in which the author and/or his editing staff get every detail correct. They're rare, but they exist. A lesson for all authors, including Mr. Jewett.

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want to put it down.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHave you ever come across a story that you were enjoying so much that you didn't want it to end? This was one of those books for me. Thoroughly enjoyed the various interwoven stories and the action. I prefer books where the story evolves mainly through the dialogue of the characters rather than just prose. I feel the authors captured the feeling/flavour of the times including the care-free, "let's jump in bed because there may be no tomorrow" attitudes of the times. I felt the ending was a bit rushed. It was a sort of cleaning up several lose ends then, "Goodbye." However, it did set the reader up for the follow-on books (which I intend to buy). I hope that I enjoy the second book as much as the first. Doesn't always happen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stories of 4 friends
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot a bad book. Would have preferred that he used real ship names. All in all good stories for the 4 branches of the US navy in WW2
