The Beast Within (Werewolves and Gaslight) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

In a world of steam cars and werewolves, a Victorian gentleman attempts to court an eccentric and independent female alchemist while protecting his dark secret. But when a mysterious killer targets his love, saving Catherine's life becomes more important than winning her heart.

This short story by an award-winning writer is a prequel to the best-selling novel A Hunt By Moonlight (Book 1 of the Werewolves and Gaslight Mysteries) and contains as a special bonus a short teaser from that novel.

The Beast Within originally appeared in the anthology Gears and Levers 2 edited by Phyllis Irene Radford (Sky Warrior Books)

Shawna Reppert, an award-winning author of fantasy and steampunk, is proud of keeping readers up all night and making them miss work deadlines. Her fiction asks questions for which there are no easy answers, while at the same time taking the reader on a fine adventure that grips them heart and soul and keeps them turning pages until the very end.

She shares her home with a black-and-orange cat named Samhain who occasionally takes over her blog.

In the past, she had occasionally been found in medieval garb on a caparisoned horse, throwing javelins into innocent hay bales that never did anything to her. More recently, she has been known to attend Victorian teas in her steampunk regalia.

She grew up in Pennsylvania, and now lives in the beautiful wine country of Oregon. Each has colored her writing in different ways.

An author with a creative plot and the skill to make it real. A young woman with intelligence who is limited by her gender, uses that intellect to help others. A man who must hide a deadly secret discovers there is a possibility of help.

With this short story, Shawna Reppert has treated her fans to a canape, a delightful hors d'oeuvre preceding her wonderful novel A Hunt by Moonlight. For those of us who have read the novel, this prequel about how Lady Fairchild and Richard Brandon meet is a must-read. For those who haven't, I am confident they will afterward (and there is a nice teaser for the novel appended to the story). Ms. Reppert captures Victorian London superbly, with excellent use of period vocabulary, insightful social commentary, and engaging characters. This is Sherlock Holmes with a macabre twist. I highly recommend it.

Delightful short story. Although I worked out the identity of the killer and the other little twist halfway through that didn't prevent this being hugely enjoyable
