Beathan The Brigante: A Tale of Slavery and Retribution in Roman Britain (Celtic Fervour Series Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

“Beathan is a strong personality in this tale. Defiant and proud, he must learn to curb his defiance in order to survive. But while outwardly he is subservient, inside, his anger is seething, and the flame of his vengeance burns.” A Discovering Diamond - Discovering Diamond Reviews.

Chains that bind. Astonishing loyalties. Revenge is sweet.

AD 89 Roman Empire. Payback takes time but it is… so rewarding.

Young Beathan of Garrigill is held hostage by General Agricola and dragged in chains all the way to Rome. However, Rome is not Beathan’s destiny. Regrettably, escape from Rome does not mean a lifetime of liberty when he returns to Britannia. Imprisoned yet again, how can he and his fellow captives gain freedom to wreak vengeance on their Roman legion enemies?

Torrin is a strong-minded young warrior-woman who is forging her own future, her aim being to destroy the Roman usurpers who control her home territory. She willingly takes care of Beathan in a time of need, but what of the future?

Agricola's career is in tatters. Attempts on his life are plentiful, having lost favour with his emperor. His gods have abandoned him, yet he finds assistance comes from a surprising source.

Will Beathan gain his freedom to return to his kin in Caledonia? Will Torrin be by his side? And how can Agricola survive without the emperor's benevolence?

The tales of the Garrigill Brigantes continue…

“This is the 5th book in the Celtic Fervour Series by Nancy Jardine. I have read all 5 books and can highly recommend them for the story telling of a period of history that has been over looked by many authors.”

Beathan The Brigante, and the complete Celtic Fervour Series, will appeal to readers who enjoy historical adventure fiction set during the 1st Century Invasion of Roman Britain.

I was SO looking forward to reading this book and it did not disappoint!

Beathan the Brigante brings Jardine's Celtic Fervour series full circle, following the journey of Beathan and Agricola to Rome with some very interesting developments along the way. Midway through the book, Beathan leaves Agricola's company and returns to Britannia, where he fulfills the destiny Nara foresaw from her goddess in 'The Beltane Choice.'

I very much enjoyed the character development in this novel, and it is richly done. The complexity of a historical figure like Agricola was handled with a lot of nuance, which I very much appreciated. Beathan comes into his own in this book as the central character, and the many friends he makes along the way, from Derwi to Gallayn to Suemas and Torrin, add vibrant color to the narrative.

There are many twists and turns that Beathan's journey takes, all of which kept me on my toes and eagerly turning to the next page. The way in which Beathan's destiny is fulfilled was quite realistic and grounded, which I quite liked. The historical research and notes in the back of the book are impeccable, as always, and you can tell how much research came to the fore in this novel. We also get a phonetic pronunciation guide for the names again - hooray!

Beathan the Brigante is a wonderfully told tale of one young warrior's journey to maturity while being dragged across the empire in chains. The final chapter really brings Jardine's saga of the Garrigill clan to a fitting close, though I hope to read more Roman-era fiction from this author!

I can't recommend highly enough - the Celtic Fervour series is excellent throughout, and this book finishes it on a high!

This series of books explore a period of history I (and most others) know very little about. The Roman greed for power fundamentally altered everyone’s way of life. The characters are fascinating, and how they relate to the history and geography of Northern Britain at that time is fascinating. Relating that to Britain and particularly North East Scotland today is so interesting. These books are well worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the Brigantes

Disclaimer: I am married to the author.
Although this book is the most recent in the series, it was my introduction to the Brigantes. However, it did not require any previous knowledge of the series.
After a slow start, the pace of the novel quickly sped up to an exciting and romantic conclusion.
My main complaint is that the table of contents, together with a glossary and a map - both of which I needed from the start of the story - are tucked in at the back of the book. However, Nancy tells me that that is an Amazon requirement for Kindle books.
Anyway, I liked it so much, I'll probably read the whole series - from the beginning!

This is the 5th book in the Celtic Fervour Series by Nancy Jardine. I have read all 5 books and can highly recommend them for the story telling of a period of history that has been over looked by many authors. The author story telling is very believable and her knowledge of the early Roman invasions of Iron Age Scotland and northern England is amazing which clearly shows through in the story telling. The books are well worth reading even if you are not a historical fan as the story keeps you interested.
