Behind the Bars (Music Street Series) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,785 ratings

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.
The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.

Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.
Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.
And in a flash, she was gone.

Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.
She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.

Caged.

Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.
Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
When we met again, I became her darkest storm.

"I have never been so emotionally moved by a book in my life. I didn't just fall in love with these characters, I walked 300 pages in their shoes, I BECAME them, and am forever changed. Behind the Bars is true Brittainy C. Cherry magic. 5 achingly beautiful stars."-Author Kandi Steiner

"This romance was an experience. It was all consuming, refreshing and a unique measure of beauty." -Olga (The Rebel Reader)

"This book is so beautifully poignant. It deals with so many struggles yet has an underlying beauty thats so strong that it lingers with you even after you are done. I still get the chills whenever I think about this book..." - Jemima (Sentranced Jem)

"If you're looking for a book that will make you feel than this book is it. Even if you're not looking, READ THIS BOOK." -Sanaa (Sanaa's Book Blog)"Brittainy has a way of creating stories that just reach your soul. We are blessed to see and experience this in Behind the Bars. It's not just about music, it's about life and how each facet of our lives shows and teaches us on how to create our own path. How we react, how we think, how we learn and certainly how we feel. The words were notes. The sentences were bars. The chapters were melodies. The story was a masterpiece."-Tammy McGowan, (After Dark Book Lovers)

A Favorite of 2017.
When I'm reading Romance, I want to feel ALL the feels. Let's be honest, I want the author to make me cry, or even tear up a bit. Luckily, Brittainy C. Cherry is a master of heart and completes the task with each story she tells. Every book of hers is more beautiful than the last. The Gravity of Us quickly became one of my favorite books of the year, making me hesitant to believe Behind the Bars could be as good. I was terribly wrong and will never again doubt her ability to pen masterpiece after masterpiece. Elliott and Jasmine were a couple of the most endearing characters I've ever read. Jasmine's life is focused on her mother's desires for her to become a world-famous pop star, leaving Jasmine with little time for anything else, even school. Finally, her mother concedes to allow Jasmine to attend public school, a place that becomes her haven. Elliott's vision of high school is anything but a haven, however. He's berated and bullied every day of his existence, forcing him to become a shell of a person, except when a saxophone is in his hands. Jasmine and Elliott form an unlikely bond forged by the power of music.  Behind the Bars fits perfectly under the umbrella of last month's post: Don't Judge a Book by its Cover...or Title. Based on this cover or title, readers may suspect this story is about race or prison. Guess again! This story simply features a beautifully redemptive love story about two musicians making a life and love of their own. Race is a non-issue and prison comes into play in a manner you will not foresee based on the title, cover, or synopsis. It's best to go into this one without preconceived ideas, and simply enjoy the exquisite story inside. I also have to give kudos for Elliott being such a relatable male character. I felt a pull to him more than anyone else in the story, making him miss him when I'd finished reading. Not to mention Ray and TJ. The guys in this book are ridiculously loveable! Talk about a book hangover! "Whenever I thought of home, I didn’t think of a place; I thought of people, the ones who shaped us into the people we were meant to become, the ones who loved us with our scars and told us those scars were beautiful, the ones who allowed us to make mistakes and still loved us fully." If you read a Brittainy Cherry book, you will not be able to say one negative word about the woman. Her heart bleeds gold onto her pages. Her writing is phenomenal and her stories feature the beauty we should all be focusing on in the world. The bottom line is if you haven't read this one yet, you're missing out!

“Because I heard his music. I heard his music last weekend, and then when I listened to him play…I don’t know…” I swallowed hard. “It’s like, for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel alone.”
How do I begin a review for this book?

This story was so much MORE than what I was expecting
I was moved beyond belief with not only the story, but the feelings the characters evoked within me
The music … listening to the mentioned music, the music inspiring the words, and understanding how important music was to each of the characters … wow.
LISTEN TO THE MUSIC WHEN YOU READ. Seriously. So much of this book is written with these songs IN THE STORY, so listening to them truly doubles the feelings you have when you experience the story.

I’ve always been a person affected greatly by music. I don’t have any particular musical talents myself, except a bit of singing here and there, but most every memory and deep feeling in my life is associated with a song. These characters took that feeling to another level — music was EVERYTHING to them: it came from their very soul. It was so deeply rooted in them that their very existence was intertwined with music.

Elliott. This boy is so much. When we meet him, he’s still in high school, but he is so much wiser than any high school boy I’ve ever met. He’s not popular, famous, or even well-liked, but he is so focused on what matters. Deep in his heart, in his very soul, he is the epitome of what humanity should be like. Outside, he isn’t what most people would give the time of day, but even that adds to his charm.

Jasmine. She is part of a dream that isn’t her own. Talent, beauty, charisma, intelligence — – these are all words that would be used to her. She hears Elliott before she sees him. “I felt him, felt his music crawl along my skin. The chords and bars of his saxophone sent chills down my spine. It sounded magical, the way the notes danced through the air, so hauntingly beautiful.” Jasmine is drawn to the beauty in his music, which is a direct reflection of the beauty in him. Unfortunately, Jasmine doesn’t see the potential for something like that within herself.

Once these two find each other, oh. my. gosh. I can’t even describe what seeing the discovery of love does to your heart. I’ve never really read a story where you watched the characters not only discover what love is in general, but do that while discovering how to love themselves and how to love their person. Elliott’s uncle TJ is my hero. I loved him so much from the very first few interactions. He also offers the deepest and most profound advice to Elliott, something I think we all need to take to heart regarding love and life: “And, buddy?” He called after me as I was almost outside the front door. “Take it slow. There’s no need to rush it. Let the harmony fall together the way it’s meant to. There’s nothing worse than a rushed note that could’ve been so perfect. Then, when you’re ready, call her beautiful, not hot, not sexy, but beautiful. They love to be called beautiful.” Tears. Straight tears. That’s exactly what I wish people would recognize, especially young adults. I tell my students this SO MUCH. There’s no reason to rush through anything! Rushing ruins all the beauty that comes from discovery!!

Gosh, I wish I could quote the entire book to you, but that would totally ruin it. I will tell you that this book is absolute BEAUTY. Are the characters perfect? No. Will your heart be broken by events that nobody can control? Yes. But there is so much here: so much to learn, to feel, and to experience.

    My absolute favorite line:
“He went back to staring out the window, and I kept staring at him. And there it was. So small, so tiny, so real. Love. It wasn’t love, but it was the beginning of it.” How I love she is acknowledging that moment when you know love is a possibility, but you haven’t quite settled in it yet. Not only is this my favorite feeling, but it is one that so often ignored. To find that wisdom in someone so young …

I feel like most of my review is just telling you how much beauty I found in this story, but it’s so true. Between the music, the feelings, and the story itself — I can’t really explain how much my heart experienced during this. Definitely one of my top ten for 2017.

4.5 stars — Oh dude, that was all the emotions and then some. I don’t know why, but this book just hit all my buttons. I felt so much, my heart broke and it was healed. I just loved this one. I’m not even sure I’ll be able to accurately express what worked for me, but it just did.

One of the things that just really worked for me was the way the book was laid out. We got a really long good chunk in the past, when they were in high school. I’m sure that won’t work for everyone, but if it had been any shorter, I think I would have felt cheated, you know? It just set everything up so perfectly. It allowed me to truly see Elliott and Jasmine fall for each other, to see them connect in such an innocent and genuine way whilst dealing with some truly heartbreaking circumstances. I FELT IT. Their love was so freaking sweet and genuine and real.

I loved BOTH characters…which is not to say that I didn’t want to smack them sometimes. But they both had this intrinsically good core that made you love them, and want things to work out for them.

Past Elliott was sweet and good and kind, and just everything that I love in a hero. My heart broke for how he changed in the wake of the tragedy, but at the same time I could totally understand it wholeheartedly. It’s funny, b/c I actually had a harder time believing his transition back to himself when Jasmine comes back…it was on the edge of being too quick. But then I would look at the passing of time, and the circumstances surrounding TJ, and I could see it more.

Jasmine was hard on my heart b/c she was an abuse sufferer. I’ve actually known people who’ve been mentally/emotionally abused, and so I knew how realistically she was portrayed…but it’s still so hard as someone on the outside to watch her continually try to please her Mom, and continue to love her. You just want to scream noooooo!!! I appreciated that while she did some awful things for people (often in the name of those she loved), she did eventually grow and set boundaries and stand up for herself.

I think it’s funny that both Jasmine and Elliott couldn’t see the right path for themselves, but they could see what was right for each other…and in that way, they helped each other heal and grow. I loved how they each saw the other, how neither of them were judgemental.

I will admit that I had a really hard time reading the bullying parts…sometimes I would want to tell myself that it was over the top, but then I would remind myself of things I’ve read…sometimes bullying can go to such extremes. I was surprised, but I actually really appreciated how the stuff with Todd played out at the end of the book. I totally wasn’t expecting that.

A shining star in this book were the many memorable side characters. I love when my main characters have a great supporting cast, it helps you to understand how they became who they are. I LOVED Jasmine’s relationship with Ray…it was just so sweet and good. Similarly, I loved Elliott’s relationship with his Mom and Katie…even as that changed over time. I also loved his BFF Jason (and Kelly)! They were hilarious, and I was so happy to see him have such a positive relationship in his life, someone who stuck by him. And who couldn’t love TJ? He was da bomb dot com.

The best part about this book is that while it was heartbreaking, there were a lot of sweet moments mixed in to lighten it up. It wasn’t just angst from beginning to end, it was a range of emotions. I LOVED that. Can’t wait to read more from this author, so far I’m 2 for 2!

What a beautiful book. I feel #InLove with each and every character. The related to much to Elliot because like him I had a very bad stutter for many years but over came it. I was bullied relentlessly and hated my life but decided to fight! My daughter stutters too but she is working through it. I didn't get to go to speech theoropy so did it by myself. I still struggle hear and then specially when I am flustered or stressed but I made it just like Elliott did. I cried ugly tears reading this book and I laughed so much that I almost wet my pants. I loved that there was a duel P.O.V as well. Loved that! I got to experience all of the emotion in each character. It was breath talking. The loss was heart breaking but the love made up for it. Strength of love is what it is all about. Thank you for this amazing story. It's the first book I have read by you but I will be hunting for more as soon as I am done with this review although it does the book no justice. It's kinda hard to put into words working from a phone. 🤔 wish I had my laptop near...

    Elliot and Jasmine's story
A beautiful love story of dreams, sacrifice, heartache. loss and forgiveness. I had an instant connection with Jasmine and Elliot, they were such special characters. Both had been through so much in their pasts, both knew the cold feeling of loneliness. This story tore out my heart and soul, but Ms. Cherry pieced it back together again beautifully.

“You’re the music in a mute world, and my heart beats because you’re here.”

5+ “You’re the music” stars!! Hands down my favourite Brittainy Cherry book to date!!! Ms. Cherry really pulled out the big guns with this story - part one was absolutely gut wrenching to read - I had to stop listening to my audiobook at one point as it was too much for my heart to take...but then I put my big girl pants on and soldiered on because I knew that the HEA would be worth all the heartache.

I fell in love with Jasmine and Elliott - I loved that it was them against the rest of the world for the most part. I loved the relationships they had with their family and friends. I enjoyed watching their relationship flourish and grow as teenagers, and then rekindle as adults.

I cried, I swooned and I laughed throughout this story. You will need tissues but the ride that Ms. Cherry takes us on was well worth the years!!
