WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS

Fiction has the power to change lives.

Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.

But there are messages within the messages.

There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.

Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.

This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.

THE LOWDOWN

Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.

In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.

In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

I enjoyed reading Benjamin Dragon. Author has good understanding of this age group and handles the subject of bullying really well. I am a grandmother raising a grandson who has learning disabilities as a result of abuse. I pre-read books for him to make sure they are not too scary but he's gotten through Harry Potter by listening to the audio as reading is hard for him I believe he would like the story and identify with the protagonist. The only caution I would give him is to tell him Benjamin's decision to go places alone with men he didn't know was a scary one and not a good idea. The author does a good job of describing the creepiness of the rock star who works it out to get Benjamin alone so he can influence him to make bad choices. It reminded me of Michael Jackson. I would remind my grandson to trust his instincts when he gets those feeling. It shows the process of Benjamin learning to make decisions for good. Lessons are learned which is always important in a kid's book, and he showed how Benjamin learned some valuable lessons. As a very experienced parent of boys I would recommend the book with some caution to a child not to ever go with strangers, even in a "safe" small town.

As an avid reader since I was eight, my siblings and I spent our summer vacations either doing chores, going to the pool or the library. Going to the library was fun for me because that's where I found the first book I read on the paranormal, "A Wrinkle In Time" by Madeleine L'engle. On a certain library visit when I was 12 (many decades ago), I found "Wrinkle" purely by accident, as I have Benjamin Dragon. This point of reference is important because after reading Benjamin, I was taken back to my childhood that was filled with amazement, innocence, and those childhood "fantastical dreams" where I could fly through the air or even move objects with my mind. Think about it, all of us did that.

It wasn't until several years ago that I recalled reading "Wrinkle" and the fun I had, that I bought the Kindle version. After reading it, I was able to be "in the moment" again. I wanted to establish that basis of imagination before I wrote this review.

It was only 3 weeks ago that I accidently found CGC by reading his incredible and timely Corps Justice series. After reading his first three great novels back to back, I wanted to see what else this "new author," to me at least, had up his sleeve. After reading an excerpt and a few fan reviews of "Benjamin Dragon," I knew then I wanted to take this new adventure with CGC. Because I was also bullied in grade school, I was immediately empathetic with Benjamin and could instantly revisit my own feelings that he so deftly described.

IMHO, CGC reminds me of Dean Koontz because of his ability to weave real-life with the unbelievable paranormal! As he tries to find the good in all people, you can only wait to hear about the sinister backdrop lurking in the shadows. I read a few of the reviews prior to reading this book and while I agree that this story line is focused on the younger audience can't you all remember the days when you'd lay out in the grass on summer days and imagine what shapes the clouds were going to form into? How about those rainy days when you stayed inside and lived each Hardy Boys investigation?

To read "Benjamin" is to be in his mind as he lifts his first "heavy pebble" and then feel the "whoosh" of your own hair when he rockets into the sky. Although this fantasy tale was "written thousands of years ago," it is still relevant in today's world of good vs. evil. You are never bored and with each twist and turn, you're brought deeper into the world of CGC!

Finally, think back to those days when your imagination ran wild and took you to so many great places that if you had had a passport then, it would be completely filled. If that's what you yearn for in these days of high stress and anxiety, then "Benjamin" is your ticket to an adventure that you soon won't forget! I'm salivating for the next installment.

I really enjoyed this book, and am excited about the series. Benjamin Dragon is a 10 year old boy whose family moves often. His father is a consultant, and his mother is a lawyer who deals in high power cases, and he understands that it is his mother's job that causes them to move so often. On his first day of school he is confronted by a bully and his followers. One of the boys sneaks up behind him and pulls his pants down. When he pulls his pants up, the leader of the group rushes him. Benjamin feels helpless, closes his eyes and waits for the impact, and sticks out his hand the way a policeman does when he is telling traffic to stop, and the most amazing thing happens. Even though he never touched him, the bully is thrown backward quite a distance and is injured. Adults rush in to see what is happening, and an ambulance is called. When Benjamin's mother shows up in the principal's office, the principal says something is to be done about what happened. Using her lawyer skills, his mother asks if that means they want to know if she is going to file a lawsuit against the school for allowing bullies to attack her son. She has the principal babbling in trying to answer her as she asks similar questions, then Benjamin is allowed to go home without punishment. Benjamin doesn't want to discuss what happened since he isn't sure he knows himself, but his mom insists they will go to the hospital the next morning to see the injured boy and apologize for hurting him. At the hospital, the boy's mother is in the room when they arrive, and Benjamin finds out the boy's name is Nathan. They are awkward at first as neither knows what to say, and the mothers leave the room to let them talk. Benjamin eventually asks Nathan if he has always bullied other kids, and asks why. Nathan says he has, and he guess it is just easier to be that way. Then he asks Benjamin how he managed to throw him without touching him, and gets excited about the possibility that Benjamin might have powers. Embarrassed and confused, Benjamin doesn't know what to say, but Nathan keeps talking. It seems that only Nathan knows what really happened, and Benjamin convinces him to keep it a secret from everyone because he doesn't want to be treated like a freak, and this is the first time it happened so he doesn't even know what to think himself. The boys become friends, and the other boys in the group begin to accept him as well. Nathan encourages him to find out what he can do. Eventually, Benjamin learns he is special and does have powers, but he also discovers there are others like him. Unfortunately, some of them are good kids, but some others are not and use their powers for personal gain. This leads to confrontations, and eventually the knowledge that there is a war coming. The book is well written, and easily understood by young readers, as well as being a fun book for adults to read. If the rest of the series is as fun as this one, I intend to get these stories for my grandchildren to read. I've read many of Mr. Cooper's other books, intended for adults, and he is a very good writer. I look forward to many more books from him.

I read this novel to my children as a bed time story and allowed them to choose the rating. Here are my kids reviews and my own right at then end.

    7 year old:
It's a good book because it was interesting and fun to read. I like the super powers. It reminds me of super heroes.
Benjamin was my favourite character because he was a nice kid that made friends easily. I liked the evil mastermind. I'm really looking forward to the next book. Because I'm excited to see what happens next.

    11 Year Old:
I though the book was good and I enjoyed the storyline. I liked how it all flowed together with the introduction of each new character. It made sense and it was all relatable.
I really liked Benjamin and how he met his best friend.

    Mum:
I read to my kids most nights and its difficult to find a story that interested them both, but this one had them from the very beginning.
The were invested I the outcome and the both really look forward to the next one.
All in all I felt the storytelling was good and the characters interesting. It works brilliantly for a child of 10 to read by himself or as a exciting bed time story for younger kids.
