The writing is just wonderful. The plot was handled skillfully. I was a little concerned about the main characters age difference but I felt it was handled very well.

    Highly recommended

Not as humorous or richly described as a Heyer, but Ley wrote in the late 1950s and early 1960s and this story is quite appealing as a young woman attempts to find out who her parents are with the help of a kind-hearted nonpareil.

This Georgian romance opens with your usual romantic schoolgirl with a crush on a handsome, dashing, highly eligible and relentlessly pursued rake. She gets into a scrape and appeals to him for help. Yah dah yah dah. But The Clandestine Betrothal takes a turn, and the story becomes less about rescuing the innocent damsel and protectively falling in love with her. Why? Because our heroine is an orphan with a mysterious past, and finding out who her parents are becomes more of a motive than is landing a husband.

Or rather, she believes she cannot marry until she knows who she really is.

The prose is engaging, and there are several interestingly developed secondary characters, particularly the heroine's guardian. There are clues dropped throughout the novel about our heroine's parentage, but not too obviously.

In my opinion, this novel is not a keeper, but it is a pleasant way to occupy a vacation day or to unwind after a hectic work week. It's entertaining to read a romance that isn't just about staring into one another's eyes. It's a nice read.

The Honorable Hugh Eversley, age 27, is also known as Beau. A handsome, wealthy, and very fashionable man, he has a younger sister, Georgiana, Georgy, who has just left her young ladies' Seminary. Georgy’s school friend, Susan Fyfield, has always enjoyed hearing stories from Georgy about Beau Eversley. After leaving school, Susan returns to live with her aunt and older cousin, Cynthia. As her aunt is a widow, money is somewhat scarce so Susan finds herself living on the edge of the nicer world where Georgy lives. Cynthia has just become betrothed. Susan is told that she is an heiress but knows nothing more about it. She never knew her parents and was brought to her aunt’s as a young child. She is convinced that she was born a bastard which makes her feel ashamed.

Susan is to attend Georgy’s coming out ball and is eager to see Beau again. As Susan is a shy person and has not had invitations to dance, Beau gallantly steps in and asks her to dance. In addition, he escorts her in for supper. Never having had anything alcoholic to drink, Susan becomes tipsy after quaffing a glass of champagne and Beau discreetly gets her aunt who takes her home. But Susan tells her aunt that she is engaged to Beau! The next morning, Susan searches out Beau and confesses her error. He agrees to go along with her but the story now continues to grow and makes for a lot of problems which also makes for a lot of fun.

Follow Susan and Beau as they search for the mystery of Susan’s past. The characters are perfectly woven into the story making for a terrific Regency romance novel which was first written in the 1960s.

This was so cute and fun and clean, too! I was impressed because it was under 200 pages but felt complete and whole. I can’t wait to read more from this author. I believe these were written awhile ago and recently digitized. I’m so grateful.

I really enjoyed this traditional romance. It started a little slowly but I was soon drawn in by the well drawn characters and clever plotting. It was well researched and I'm now looking forward to reading this author's other publications. For anyone seeking a beautifully written escapist read, look no further.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Whirlwind of a story!

When I first began to read this book, I was not impressed. I planned to give it a 3 at most. But the further on I read, the most intrigued I became. At first I resented the fact that the writer did not give sufficient background information on the main female character, Susan Fyfield. But as the story unfolded, I realized why. At first I thought the characters had very little substance or interest and were too stereotypical. But as the story developed, so did the characters. The storyline became rife with surprising twists and turns, and filled with intrigue and suspense. The dialogue was rich and colourful, and wonderfully humorous. However, I do wish the writer had given us a glimpse of our couple once officially betrothed. That would have been very satisfying. Nevertheless a very good read.

This tale was an easy read, with very interesting characters and plot. There was romance aplenty and an irascible grandfather that would not and did not bend.
