Beyond Night Kindle Edition
An Epic Fantasy tale of action, adventure, heroism, horror and sorcery…
Beyond Night is a Dark Fantasy Horror novel that pulls back the veil of nearly two thousand years of jaded history. Come tread in the bloody footprints left by monsters, soldiers and wizards and behold what lies hidden Beyond Night itself.
It’s Bigfoot War mixed with Lovecraftian horror on the edge of the Roman Empire.
How could Rome lose a Legion? What could’ve happened to blot out the existence of over five thousand men not only from history but the Earth itself?
As the Legion moves north to engage the forces of Pictdom, a dark horror emerges from the bowels of the Earth. Thought to be random attacks by hulking monsters, Decurion August soon learns a dire truth, that these bloody events are directed by opposing the wizards of the Picts. While one side assembles all tribes in a confederated army to battle the Legion, the other pulls these Greyman beasts from the depths of the Earth.
August fights not only these creatures and workers of magicks, but internal passions in the Legion itself.
Can he discover a way to survive the enormous bloodletting about to take place that will only serve to satisfy the wizards of Pictdom?

"Vivid Lovecraftian horror set on the northern fringe of the Roman Empire. A powerful book with very real soldiers--and definitely not for the squeamish." - David Drake, author of Hammer's Slammers

About the authors
Eric S Brown is the author of numerous books including the Bigfoot War series, the Kaiju Apocalypse series, and the Homeworld series. Some of his stand alone works include War of the Worlds Plus Blood Guts and Zombies, Kraken, Megalodon, Megalodon Apocalypse, Sasquatch Lake, Crawlers, and World War of the Dead to name only a few. His short fiction has been published in anthologies from Baen Books, the Grantville Gazette, Walmart World Magazine, and hundreds of other places in the small press and beyond. The first book of his Bigfoot War series was adapted into a feature film in 2014 by Origin Releasing.
Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

Very entertaining. Characters were well developed and the fight scenes were interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2018What do you get when you combine Lovecraftian horror, big foot, and Roman legionaries? A tale that is brutal, vivid, and utterly immersive. Beyond Night is my jam, and I couldn't get enough of it!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2019I wanted to like this book more than I did. I love Rome and I’ve read at least one other Brown book, but this novel never quite worked for me. The biggest problem was that the Roman legion never once felt Roman to me. The lack of discipline was the largest problem, but there were subtle elements as well such as the speech of the legionnaires that never quite made me believe that we were dealing with one of the most successful militaries the world has ever seen.
On the positive side, the three-way threat proved to be an interesting problem. But again having one be a threat that the Romans repeatedly refused to believe in didn’t quite work. The authors often presented the Romans as condemning superstition when they had a large number of unscientific beliefs themselves. They also had an interest in other peoples’ gods and their disdain for the possibility that there was a genuine supernatural cause for the very unnatural-seeming deaths of their legionnaires just didn’t strike me as believable.
In a horror novel like this I expect most of the characters to die so a lot of the fun is figuring out who will make it through the end of the novel. One of the survivors made me laugh with delight. I’m not sure if I was supposed to like him but he was probably my favorite character, even though he was a decidedly minor one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2018A wild, frenetic ride from two of my favorite authors. This book has so many of my favorite elements-monsters, magic, mayhem-all wrapped up in a historical premise with Lovecraftian overtones. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019Beyond Night was a lot of fun to read. Authors Eric S. Brown and Steven Shrewsbury did a fine job of working their writing together into a fairly seamless narrative. I always worry about books with two authors being jarring as each chapter switches to another writer, but that thankfully never happened with this story. Some great imagery, violent battles, and some nicely gory kills made the pace of this book move quickly. My only two criticisms were the typos that the publisher should have easily caught and the need for more details regarding the Roman army. I would have loved to know more about how they train, how they feed thousands of men on a long campaign, specific advantages of their selected weapons, what they do to pass the time once their camp is built, etc. A few details were touched upon, but I could have used a lot more to fully paint a realistic Roman army. Regardless, this was a very solid book that more than satisfied my horror and dark fantasy hunger.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2018I love this one, like any other Eric S. Brown book. I hope there is a sequel
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2018Beyond Night by Eric S. Brown and Steven L. Shrewsbury starts out strong, with a yarn about the Roman Legion, a group I have not read about fictionally or not, in a long time. The book moves along, rarely bogging down in dialogue that seems wasted. Beyond Night is a classic good vs evil story where at times you wonder which side is good and which is evil. As always, I will not go into the plotline except to say if you, or someone you buy gifts for, likes Druids, Bigfoot like creatures, Romans and lots of bloodshed and gore, grab this book up right now.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2018Bigfoot, a Roman legion, Picts, wizards and bloody carnage. I knew I had to read this book. I’ve enjoyed Eric’s Bigfoot War Series and this is my first time reading something by Steven. I was curious how this author team would handle the disappearance of a Roman legion consisting of 5000 battle seasoned men.
They did an outstanding job, giving a fascinating historical account of the Roman invasion into Pict lands, spicing it up with some magic in the form of wizards, a weaver and a long dead Pict queen.
And let’s not forget Bigfoot. They are huge, mad with a lust for carnage and damn near unstoppable. When the slew of creatures attack the Roman’s its absolute chaos and this horror fan loved it.
There was a hitch in my reading pleasure though. It was hard going at the beginning. The sentences were oddly written. I’m guessing its written as the character’s would speak in their time. And commas often felt like they were in the wrong place, breaking the flow of the story for me. Once I got the hang of it, I was able to concentrate more on the story. My copy is an ARC so I have no idea if the published book has these same occurrences.
There’s so many agendas in play. Each side believes theirs is the right one and use any means necessary to win. Subterfuge, strategy, magic and blunt force all come into play as all move toward an epic battle.
Egad, this was one dark, vicious read, filled with heavy atmosphere. The writing was powerful and I easily visualized many scenes, my imagination fueled by movies like The 13th Warrior and The Centurian.
If you’re a fan of Bigfoot, Lovecraftian and historical horror, you’ll want to read this one.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorefest
We all know that the Romans invaded Britain. Not without trying the Pictdom fight back. With Greyman and ancient magic, have the Romans got a chance.
With Armies of thousands, there were quite a few characters that had their story to tell. August in charge of a troop, a German born who had moved up the ranks of the Legion, Rufus, August’s slave who whilst admire August hated the situation. Porcius, a spartan that loved to fight, General Malitus, whilst he liked a good drink, he still knew how to wield a sword. Fighting against the Romans were Drust, an aging wizard that could control the Greyman and Gonar his apprentice, the Weaver another powerful wizard who resurrected Queen Tancorix back to help the Pict defeat the Romans.
Whilst I knew how violent the Romans were (yes, I did watch Gladiators), the way these authors told this story was dark and gruesome. The graphic vivid description of the battles will please any horror fan. I have not read any of these authors work before and I found that the story flowed seamlessly. The story was told from both perspectives, the Romans and the Picts and whilst I am British I did find a few of the Romans fascinating and one of my favourite characters was Porcius, a soldier who took no nonsence.
Looking at all the categories that this book falls into, I can honestly say it ticks all the boxes. Reading this has made me curious in reading more of the authors work. A gore filled read
