The Bleak Midwinter: A Georgia Pattison Christmas Novella Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Georgia is asked to stay at a Worcestershire country house, but the discovery of a body draped over a fountain outside her window on Boxing Day links to the holiday she shared in Rhodes the previous summer with Sir Edward Broome, her beloved Ned. Chief Inspector Hamilton in her usual acerbic way, inveigles her to help untangle the web of lies and deceit. However, Georgia's problem becomes not who is guilty but who is innocent and who can she trust. This Christmas adventure will entertain fans of Lesley Cookman and Faith Martin. As usual, there are YouTube links to the music mentioned in the story.

Former chartered librarian, April Taylor, who worked in the fields of law enforcement and the Pharmaceutical industry, retired early to become a kept woman and chase her dream of being a writer.

In 2008, Legend Press published the first version of "Dearly Ransomed Soul", set in Worcester and featuring operatic soprano, Georgia Pattison. A revised version of "Dearly Ransomed Soul" was published in 2015 with the sequel, "Laid In Earth" the following year.

April’s historical crime fantasy books set in and around Hampton Court Palace near London, under the collective title, "The Tudor Enigma", were published by Harlequin. Apothecary and Elemancer, Luke Ballard, protects the son of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. The young and inexperienced Henry IX is beset with conspiracies both at home and abroad.

Since then April has published more Georgia Pattison novellas and a couple of standalones, one being a full-length Sherlock Holmes story, "Murder at Oakwood Grange", and the other a paranormal thriller, "The Angel Killer". She also wrote "Cutting Out the Academic Crap" as a short guide for students to help them write effective dissertations.

A terrific read. Not sure what time period it's supposed to be set in but it seems to reflect the time period that was popular in the Golden Age of Crime. Loved the characters especially the know her own mind outspoken heroine although found the hero to be a bit of a weak character when compared to her,
It all started off fairly innocently. A holiday to relax and spend time together was bulldozed by the unexpected arrival of an old school friend. The two men had met and befriend each other from the age of eleven. An accident, a mysterious package and a christmas invitation lead to them being at the house with guests that she certainly wouldn't have picked. His friend going all out to belittle anyone and everything. Is it an surprise to anyone that his body was discovered in the fountain. As the police investigate, she knows she has to do something to clear her boyfriend's name. Can she unravel what this house party is really in aid of and find the killer?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treat of a Christmas Country House Mystery

There’s nothing like returning bleary-eyed to your downstairs bedroom in a crumbling country house and seeing through the French doors one’s beloved slumped across a snowy fountain – but these things tend to happen to Georgia Pattison. It isn’t Ned of course, or this would have been a very short tale, but as Supt Hamilton stomps her way across the flag-floored kitchen and her sidekick turns out to be a guest with his own agenda, Georgia’s hackles rise. Someone has been playing a very long game. Could it have been to set up Ned?

Caught in the snow-bound Worcestershire countryside, this Country House mystery is a delight of twists and turns as all the possible murderers sit round the extended dining table. It’s not a case of who’s lying, but by how much. The author ensures all the clues are up front and central, leaving a devilish puzzle for the reader to unwrap. Go for it. It certainly got me.
