Bloom: A clean paranormal romance inspired by Indian mythology (Elementals of India Book 1) Kindle Edition
Bollywood meets Twilight in this addictive tale of reincarnated lovers and revenge.
When eighteen-year-old Samantha visits India for the first time in ten years, she expects to spend the summer before she starts college reconnecting with her grandmother - the last link she has to her roots and her father's homeland.
No one around Sam knows what to make of this half-Indian-half-white girl with her purple hair and her ripped jeans, but that's fine. She's not here to make friends.
Vikram, on the other hand, is great at making friends. As long as they're customers. He's spending his summer working at his dad's flower shop. He's desperate to prove that he can take over the family business.
When these two meet, there's an instant attraction. But between them lies the shadow of a two-hundred-year-old love story and a murky prophecy. Add in a faceless enemy determined to keep them apart, and things aren't going to go smooth.
And then there's the fact that there's more to Vikram than meets the eye. Sam could almost swear there's something otherworldly about him...

Review
In writing Bloom, Sudha Kuruganti delivers moments that range from magical to suspenseful, with comedy, while each element creates a breathtaking romance. The meet-cute is a delightful and humorous moment straight from a rom-com as Samantha misinterprets Vikram's charming of the flowers she's buying and the argument that ensues.
Samantha is a multi-faceted character who has hardened herself since the loss of her parents and believes she has more important things than cute boys in her life. The grief over that loss is present throughout with her losing her parents a year apart, and Sudha Kuruganti is honest in how this will affect you. A sense of loneliness has grown from this grief with her hiding herself away but through her bond with Vikram, she begins to bloom again and this is at the heart of this enchanting love story.
The incorporation of mythology, magic, and romance creates a unique story that will be hard to put down. At the end of each chapter are interludes that tell the love story of Meera and Michael which reflects Samantha and Vikram's own story, including getting caught using powers and an enemy trying to tear them apart. Magic is subtly woven into the realism of the world with vivid touches throughout from a prophecy to nature-influenced abilities.
Bloom is rich in details that breathe life into the storytelling and delivers a lovely love tale inspired by Indian mythology. - Readers' Favorite

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2023This is the first book I've read based on India. It is definitely not the last! Good blending of both cultures with fleshshed out outlikeable characters. Loved the mythology woven in.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2025Excellent character development… I enjoyed the premise. Slow build up to tense situations. Delightful. Found the back-and-forth from present day to the past good but wished the segments were a bit longer. The transition between current and past was slightly difficult for me to adjust to.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2021It's really hard to find a clean paranormal romance lately. So I was very pleased to fine this author. Hopefully her other books are as Awesome and believable. I'm going to see LOL .
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2020Beautiful story that takes place in India. A nice blend of modern American-raised teenager that visits her grandmother in India and discovers a bit of ancient magic, a sense of family and belonging, and best of all, love.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2024Loved the characters—all of them. I enjoy strong female leads who are not perfect. Sam is complex, but tries to do the right thing. The characters are all very relatable. This story is interesting and I love the twist on the magic. This writer is so good. I really enjoy the Indian folklore and the way she presents it. I hope there will be a story on the Nysha and Arjun.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2020Bloom creates a unique world in the Indian culture. It illustrates the beauties that come from living in that area of the world along with the diversity in perspectives, language, and way of life. Sudha Kuruganti takes this world and adds the elements of fantasy to make this story a unique take on reincarnation and finding true love.
Samantha is a young woman who comes to India to visit her grandmother before starting college. Vikram is the son of a flower shop owner who is looking to prove himself. Both have their own unique struggles in life. Can they work together to fulfill a 200 year old prophecy? This story is intriguing and uses fantasy and culture differences to create a plot line that draws the reader and tells of Indian folklore.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book perfect for some light reading
I quite enjoyed reading the book. The story is sweet and clean, so suitable for all ages.
Made for a refreshing read in-between other more serious books.
I liked the characters, and the snippets about Yaksha,, and I really liked the concept of how they exist as a secret community living ordinary lived amongst us. Wish more lore about Yaksha was includes though. That would have made the story feel more immersive.
What the author can do better in future books is actually work on the dialogues, I found a few of them, mostly in the early chapters a little flat and unnatural. I mean, we don't converse like that here in India.
Also, the climax just seemed little over the top, even a tad unbelievable, for a villain who worked alone without anyone's help.
And lastly, the book has a few grammar mistakes and typos which could have been avoided with good editing.
All in all a good book for light reading. If clean romances are your thing, with a touch of paranormal, then this is the book for you. For the hardcore fantasy or romantasy fans out there, who are expecting a very immersive, intricate storyline and characters, this might not be the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
Despite being an Indian myself, I haven't read many books by Indian authors. And when it comes to fantasy novels by an Indian author, this is my very first one in the category. I picked it up because of a reading challenge and ended up enjoying it.
An urban fantasy revolving around elementals, it focused on Vikram, who is a yaksha or nature spirit. His magical ability with plants was explored in an interesting manner. However, I wish the book had given more information about the other yakshas as well. Vikram's family was also magical, so I kept wondering what their individual powers were.
I liked Samantha's character the most. She balanced her Indian and American side well. She was respectful towards the Indian culture even though she knew very little about it; at the same time, she did not give up her American roots for the sake of fitting in. She was real and unapologetic of who she was.
The book also had a paranormal aspect in terms of reincarnation, but it wasn't explored as much. The romance was limited but sweet. Though the book is marketed as Bollywood meets Twilight, I was relieved that it didn't have too much drama, angst, or cliches.
It was great reading a book where I could connect with all the little details related to cuisine, language, place, etc. Sometimes when I read books by foreign authors, I do not understand certain references, but this was a completely different experience.
I recommend the book to readers who enjoy fast-paced urban fantasies with clean romance. Also, if you're interested in Indian mythology and history, you should give it a try.
